SQL Errors Redux

Caves of Narshe Site News
We've had some fresh reports of the dreaded "error 28 from table handler" coming back (along with the odd error -1). In fact, I believe it's happening right now.

Let me stress that this is only our fault in so much that we chose FuitadNET as our web hosting provider. There's nothing we can do to solve this short of harassing them. It's their problem that they let areas fill up that are necessary for the correct operation of our databases. We can't empty them, since much of their contents belong to other users - again, let us stress that this problem is caused without our mistake; the error belongs to the web hosting company and their staff.

Still, thanks to those of you that let us know. I'll reiterate my guidelines for e-mailing us from last time this happened:

It's better that not every member e-mails us: perhaps the folks in chat at the time could arrange for one person to send the e-mail. Keep the subject line "SQL Error" (change the '+' in the default subject to a space, if it's there) so we can filter the messages nicely.

Thanks for your patience, folks.

Edit
Some clarification - the problem described here with the web hosting applies ONLY to "error 28" issues. Other problems may not be host related and should still be brought to our attention using the guidelines above. -R51

Zephir Okay, maybe a little update on the error:

(This is from the 8BT forums, btw)

The good news is the problem isn't in vbulletin - the problem is in the server OS - somehow the file postindex.myd has become chmodded so that mysql can't access or alter it. Eventually though this will corrupt the hell out of the search feature. I strongly recommend you close the forums if you can sparky.

I don't think this Morris guy's on the server staff, but I didn't see Shiney debating anything he said. In fact, he thanked him.

........and I don't have a flipping clue what any of that means. wacko.gif

Apparently, Pierre's looking into it, or they're waiting for him to look into it. The problem's actually worse on the NP forums, because new posts don't show up and posts can't be edited. Also, anything posted after some point of time on Dec. 26th isn't even showing up at all. A few days ago 8 Bit Theatre's home page went down with a serious error, so I'm sure they're hard at work to make sure that doesn't happen again. Here's to hoping they just get it done soon so this whole thing doesn't happen three times and the NP forums come back up. smile.gif

Tiddles It's not the same error, but the "somehow someone on the hosting end has done something bizarre" element definitely applies.

Our error comes from /tmp filling up its disk space allocation (or the disk itself filling up) and not allowing the creation of temporary tables, which are needed for advanced queries. That's why some things (including posting) continue to work while others don't.

We've been told in the past that it fills up due to users backing up their sites -- the system creates a temporary file that is too big. Apparently stopping users from using this backup utility isn't feasible because it's "inconvenient", while utterly breaking hostees' websites for days apparently isn't.
