Sony CEO Stepping Down

And the rest of the world wonders if one man could possibly have been responsible for all of the mistakes Sony's been making in the past year.

Ken Kutaragi, chairman and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. and the man who brought us the original Playstation, will formally announce his retirement in June at the annual shareholder's meeting. He will retain an honorary title of chairman of SCEI as well as an advisory role to some of the other higher-ups.

Unfortunately, with Sony slowly strangling their video game market share, it's hard to view this as a successful leader leaving in triumph. It will be interesting to see what, if any, changes the new management of SCEI decides to undertake.

Hamedo I don't think the man is solely responsible, but I'm sure he owns a large piece of Sony's recent bad showings.

This could be the dawn of a new, better era for them.

Del S It should still be noted their profits were projected to increase sixfold (partially thanks to Tellys, but hey) and that they did of course break the console sales record in the UK. However, I feel it only fair to point out that the Rage virus successfully wiped out the entire country in under a month in the movie "28 Days Later"... I doubt Sony or even Nintendo could top that! Apple... Er, leave that with me for a while.

Hamedo In order to cure, Sony must first understand.

laszlow Nintendo would love to have Kutaragi join their team. Hey, I didn't say it. Hey, he practically invented the Playstation and he designed the SNES's sound chip; Iwata's right - he's probably not a bad dude to have on staff.

I actually agree. Kutaragi says some stupid things, but at least he isn't kicking *** and taking names
Edit
That was a reginator reference there, people.

Elessar Ken Kutaragi is almost singly-responsible for the Playstation and Playstation 2. The PSX was actually going to be an add-on to the SNES, but the technology was revamped and redeveloped under a project that would see Sony become the leader of an industry it had no marketing prowess in. He was the one that pushed and led these projects, and his name shall be remembered forever.

Under his leadership, Sony managed to go from the golden era of the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis to one where the two dominant players were virtual unknowns. He should be remembered for his success, not for the current and unsettled position of the PS3.

Toxiedogg It seems Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi is one person who won't be sad to see Ken kutaragi go at Sony.

In an interview with US games mag EGM, he was asked why he wasn't
making any games for the PS3. His answer was "The machine architerture is tricky, and i don't like Ken kutaragi".

He also said he found the "Wii" intriguing" but had no currents plans to make any games for it.

Well at least we now know why.
