Nintendo's E3 News - Twilight Princess

E3 Expo
After dropping the new-name bombshell, Nintendo must have realized that they had to come up with something good for E3 or risk being laughed out of the console market. (At least they seemed to realize that no one liked the new name.) But if you're looking for anything as concrete as, oh, a launch date, maybe, or a price, quit reading now. They don't have their act together that much.

What they did have was largely an amalgum of concept videos designed to show off the new--not next--generation of gaming. Mostly, they demonstrated how their new controller can function as a gun, a sword, a fishing rod, a tennis racket...and possibly a back scratcher, if they make it a little longer.

The real gem of the presentation was evidence that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will actually be released someday. In fact, it's planned in two versions, for both the GameCube and the new system. There has been little detail about what the differences will be, but they will have to be substantial if the new controller is to play a significant roll. Weapons and items are mapped to the D pad, and fighting is done by swinging the remote and the nunchaku attachment. Also, you'll get to hear sound effects from your hand thanks to the built-in speaker.

In case you can't tell from the tone of the above, I'm feeling a wee bit (pun intended) disillusioned with the console formerly known as the Revolution. It seems like Nintendo is giving up producing things that gamers actually want and just trying to figure out something new. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I haven't heard much lately to suggest that Nintendo is in any way interested in making their supporters happy.

Personally, waving my arms around while playing a video game sounds like a pain in the butt.

I was thinking th exact same thing, but I am planning on buying the nintendo Wii becasue I would love to be able to play all nintndo games on one console as well as playing online SSB, I doubt i will play any games that require you to wave the controller around, but I am definatley going to be using the gamecube style controller when I get a Wii

Kane I heard that they will also be releasing a simple "non-waving around type" controller. Has anyone heard whether or not the new "remote type" controller will be necessary to play the new Zelda game.

Elessar The simple controller isn't mere rumor, it's reality and confirmed on Nintendo's website.

Looks kinda ugly, but then again I always did like the Dual Shock. Of course, it is basically an upgrade of the SNES controller so who am I to complain.

That's the truth, but in the Super Smash Brothers Brawl presentation they mentioned that Gamecube controllers could be used to play the game, So I'm assuming that the GC controller should still work for a lot of games, just like how the Dualshock 1 controller can be used for many PS2 games.

Zeromus_X If anything, Wii dominated E3. It had more time then the other systems, at least. People aren't stupid enough yet to give up a system because it's name sounds funny only in English. Nintendo is focusing on making games and making playing games more than pressing buttons on a controller, as opposed to making a console a multimedia prostitute.

Controller looks spiffy. I don't need a controller with a thousand buttons, this looks perfect.

If only this were true. I know at least four dudes at school who have honestly turned away from the Wii simply because of its name

And am I the only guy here keeping an open mind on the controller? I want to know how it could be used to play SSBB. As I've said before, I'm definetly getting one

Ad as for the media prostitute thing, I just wish to add that this is why I enjoy the Nintendo DS over the PSP.

TheEvilEye I think this is a step in the right direction, personally. And I'm glad Nintendo has been the first to show interest in challenging the way we traditionally play and think about video games, while still keeping their loyal fanbase interested. What Nintendo fans (myself included) really wanted are the games they've enjoyed as kids, and Nintendo is at least giving them that. The return of Link, Mario, Fox, Samus, and of course their ultimate creation, SSB, is what has made their system great and able to compete for this long. Love it or hate it, I have to give Nintendo credit for at least trying to step out of the norm for videogames when it comes to the console. Whether the system and the third-party developers actually go along with these new concepts is another story, but at least the opportunity is there to show that videogames have not hit an innovative dead-end.

Nytecrawla Arrghh!

Death to the infidels who ordered this!

I demand a two button rectangular controller with horrible response time to suit my playing desires!

But this is nice too.

Elena1999 If I see that ta more traditional looking controller or the GC controller is used more often or is an option then I will probably get a Wii.

Agreed. The Wii completely stole the show at E3, and on the last day the unimpressive Sony queues were empty (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4767807.stm)

While I must say I was taken with the beauty of the FFXIII trailer, I'm still more interested in buying a Wii - c'mon, the new Smash, Zelda, Mario, AND Metroid? No doubt FFXIII won't be out for at least another year and a half anyways. The Wii's graphics are its only weak point compared to its competitors, but I've never cared for the realism as much as I have the fun factor anyways. And to me, the Wii looks very, very fun (let's not forget the virtual console as well).

That looks difficult to use. The SNES controller was pretty near perfect, but you didn't have to reach for joysticks at the bottom of the controller.

No, I find the remote-controller the first innovation in gaming since they let you play non-gaming discs on the console.
