Nintendo Announces Next Portable System - 3DS

Nintendo
Nintendo has announced the next in their line of DS handheld gaming - the Nintendo 3DS. Looking to capitalize on the newest visual sensation, the 3DS will use the motion detection of devices like the iPhone to render games in 3D without any sort of special glasses required. Not a whole lot is known, but the system will continue to have two screens (my first thought when seeing "3DS" was a third screen) and will be backwards-compatible with DS and DSi titles.

-------------------

This seems like a gimmick at first, but as the article above mentions, Nintendo has always done things that seem goofy at first but typically turn out well in the end. I am skeptical that this will bring a whole lot of development to the DSi that wasn't there already, but if they make the system a full overhaul rather than just an update - meaning greater capability for larger, prettier games - it may bring more developers over. Gaming companies are a lot more creative than I think I like to give them credit for at first glance, and there could be some neat titles coming out for a system like this, but I fear that it's just going to spawn a whole lot of Brain-Age or "Find This" type of games that aren't meant for a generation of gamers that continues to get older.

We will see!

Cazboab If they don't bring out Super monkey ball on this they're mad.

BlitzSage Man, I just bought the stupid DS. But oh well, I didn't go for the one with the camera, I don't see any reason (yet) to go for 3D.

FallingHeart You guys, it's March 23.

I'm praying, PRAYING that this is an extremely elaborate april fools prank on nintendo's part. Watch, the reveal for the full system will be on april first and on the second they'll yank the rugs out from underneath our feet.

sweetdude I can't wait to see this in action. I've got no intention of buying this or a DS, but if it works it'll be really cool. I read that Sony are releasing 3D games and a 3D TV later this year, while the 3DS will be out this year or 2011. To be honest, I'm much more interested in 3D Sony games than Nintendo. What do you think: Mario 3D. Have we had that one yet?

Glenn Magus Harvey I hope that this does not flop like the 3DO or the VB.

Neal Sony says "LOL" to 3DS, but they also said the same thing to the Wii, so maybe they're just jealous.

There's one huge thing that makes a comparison to the 3DO and VB not work very well: the 3DS will have backward compatibility. With that, this new system will have plenty of reason to sell unless Nintendo continues to offer a bunch of different versions of the DS simultaneously. Games in 3D (or whatever Nintendo will consider acceptable 3D for a handheld, since we don't yet know what the meaning of 3D is in this context, yet) will only be a bonus.

Also, the 3DS wins based on not having to wear it on your head and not having your library crippled by too many early 90's "interactive videos."

Note that I'm not being fanboyish for the NDS here - I only own a PSP.

Glenn Magus Harvey Oh, I was only comparing it to the 3DO because of the name similarity.

And apparently, since it's not going to involve wearing stuff, it likely won't flop the way the VB did. Sure, it depends on the repertoire of games for the system, but that's secondary to user enjoyment of even using the system in the first place.

Nytecrawla I just hope this doesn't cause as many headaches as the VB did. Man that thing was bad.
