Nintendo 3DS Gets Official

Nintendo 3DS
As of yesterday, the newest addition to Nintendo's DS handhelds was given an official Japanese release date and price; it will be available in Japan on February 26, 2011 in two stylin' colors: blue and black. Er, Aqua Blue and Cosmos Black. As for the price, the 3DS is set to sell for the Japanese equivalent of $300.

If that sounds steep to you, don't get too worried just yet: it's almost certainly due for a price cut when released in the US market (our own humble site founder has estimated a price of $250: don't make him wrong, Nintendo), which should be sometime in March 2011.

In case you've forgotten how this news pertains to CoN, there are several Square Enix titles in development for the 3DS. The original Kingdom Hearts game will be getting a 3D port-sorta. The Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises will also be making eventual appearances on the handheld, in addition to Chocobo Racing 3D.

Also, there's a little something called Kid Icarus: Uprising on the horizon that a few members may or may not be marginally interested in...

Glenn Magus Harvey They're reviving the Kid Icarus series.

Now they just need to get Konami to revive the Knightmare / Maze of Galious series. Hopefully La-Mulana will be successful and spur the revival of its own predecessor...

No, but seriously, I am going to be ALL over the 3DS. Megaman Legends, Ocarina of Time, Kid Icarus and the countless other titles coming out are making even that steep price tag seem worthwhile. I'm even more curious as to what the individual game pricing will be set at.

Glenn Magus Harvey Haven't handheld games usually been $40 and under?

That's my estimate, at least, for competitive pricing. Add inflation if desired.

It's about damn time. I never got to play the GB game. I got the music from the last level stuck in my head (really quite random because I know it's been more than 10 years since I played it) the other day and I felt this warm sense of nostalgia. I checked VC for it and I know that it's there but it has a note at the bottom that says that the passwords used in the NES version are not valid in the VC version and that disappointed me. I kind of wanted to play the last level......

Shinrin The Kingdom Hearts 3D game is not a port of KH1 but a new KH game. Well that's what i've been hearing anyway.

seraphimdreamer777 Well I know that usually handhelds are $40 and under but...

This system is more advance. I'd say as long as they aren't like Neo Geo games they were expensive!!!

I can't wait for Chocobo Racing. I hope Cloud and Squall will return as secret racers. Any news on it or any of the games release. And please tell me Fleas a secret racer. wub.gif Sorry about the last thing I said just had to ask though I doubt it. flag-olly.gif

Glenn Magus Harvey Have Crono series characters ever starred in any games outside their own series?

Come to think of it, I don't think so, and I suspect that the Crono series's lead designer or design team may have something about really wanting to keep their material "pure", as shown by their rather strange opposition to the Crimson Echoes sequel hack...

Well, if you're getting it on VC anyway, then you might as well just find an NES ROM of the game as well, since between an NES cart and a VC version I'd say you should feel no guilt about using a ROM.

Or you could just pop the NES cart back in. smile.gif

I read a couple things on that and they seemed to be mostly unsure. I'm not very familiar with the series myself, but I guess it looks just like the original and has the same characters. At the same time, I believe that the clips shown show some stuff that is a bit out of line with the original. So I'm guessing we'll just have to wait and see if this is some sort of expansion of the original game or a new entry in the series entirely.

Yes this may be true but Aya Brea from Parasite Eve was technically in the 1st Chocobo Racing PSX. Even though all they shown was a police car.

But anyways I doubt even if a Crono character appeared as a secret racer it probably wouldn't be Flea. Unless Ozzie and Slash were included too.

But anyways as to my other question if any release dates were finalized for any 3DS games themselves including Chocobo Racing. I guess no is the answer. I'm only guessing because I read the article and nothing was really said. Except the system release date.

BlitzSage I would get excited about this, but I need to see it work first, in person, maybe they'll have it at Best Buy of Walmart, not to say I'm skeptical. I mean, if they pull this off, this generation of the console wars is over.
FallingHeartComment 11: 2010-10-01 02:00
FallingHeart I am never going to ever get excited about anything ever again.

So, I'm curious, and this goes out to anyone who's upset at this price - if the price had been $300 and this revelation about why it's so high had never come to light, would it still be "ridiculous?" Or is it just the hubris that makes it so?

I was never going to buy one of these day one. I might never buy one at all. But I know that they'll still sell like mad at that price, and in my opinion, everyone complaining about it knows it too. So, be upset, but know that it's not going to matter in the long run, for two reasons: one, it will still sell at $300. The market will bear it for a while, and it will dampen enthusiasm enough that there won't be shortages for the people willing to pay $300. Two, none of us know that it's going to be $300 in North America. There's been no announcement. Will it be much lower? No, of course not, but I'm still sticking with my prediction, mentioned in the first post, that it will hit North America at a $250 price point. That's still expensive, but the DSi was $190 when it first came out, and it wasn't even as new-technology as the 3DS will be.

I'm no Nintendo fanboy. I haven't owned a Nintendo gaming unit since the N64, and I barely used it. And yet, here I am, saying that this isn't the end of the world. Everything will be fine - if you can't stomach the price, you didn't need one of these anyway. smile.gif

Well, now that I think of it, the iPhone was that much, wasn't it? My reaction was exclusively for the fact that I can't afford a $300 game system. I'm still very much interested, just, at a budget. For me, it's simple math. College books/car payment, or awesome 3D machine. My saying ridiculous means "economically ridiculous." I completely understand why it's that much.

And I think you're right, this will sell a lot. And like I said earlier, this will seal it for Nintendo. And I'm kind of glad actually, because I wouldn't call myself a fanboy, but I do root for them a bit.
TonepoetComment 15: 2010-10-15 01:04
Tonepoet Oh hey, Nintendo is trying their hand at 3D technology again. I suppose it can't fare any worse than the Virtual Boy but didn't the Gameboy build a lot of its success on low cost? Having a graphical gimmick to make the games more realistic was the Gamegear's schtickt and that battle went into Nintendo's favor as I recall. I guess the more important aspect of that battle was battery life though and I don't think Nintendo's apt to make a device that dies too quickly.

Also playing the supply and demand game isn't dumb at all. Higher could mean more profits, even if you have a marginally smaller number of buyers. However I think they need to realize that at E3 they weren't able to see the full story. Granted that's not entirely fair comparison since 3D tech is expensive and not available on the iPhone but it's something to consider..

Let's just hope they don't pull a Sony on us or else we're screwed.

More opinions reserved 'till I get some 3D glasses for my T.V. to see just how eyepopping 3D tech is.
