New Square Enix Concert Series Announced
With all of the live music that Square Enix, and in particular the Roth family, have produced over the years, you might wonder what additional concerts we have yet to see. It appears that the answer for now is that we'll get a concert series, called simply ""The Music of Square Enix," that collects music from just about all over the Squenix songbook.
The new website for the series explicitly references music from Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Mana, NieR, and Octopath; this alone could fill a setlist, but naturally the site also says that other series of games will be included too.
So far, fifteen shows have been announced worldwide, with on-sale dates for almost all of the shows in Europe and the United States happening this week. The concert will kick off in Tokyo in April of 2026, then head into the United States in May and June, stopping in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and Portland, Oregon. Two shows are also scheduled in Fort Worth in 2027, with a few shows in Asia and Europe in between, which seems to imply that they have quite a few other dates that they would like to fill in other locations too.

| Heh, I was just thinking, after the recent Final Fantasy concert, that i'd like to hear a greater variety of stuff. | |

| I have a calendar notification to buy our tickets to the new concert. We actually drive out of town this weekend to go see Distant Worlds again. We absolutely love it and I recommend going if anyone gets a chance. I can't wait for this new one, though. It's going to be amazing! | |

| What's the picture of the girl and the boy and the ??? on a wooden sailboat in the sea? Second from top left of the "gallery". For a moment I thought this was Nostalgia, the DS game, but that would (1) swap the girl and the boy (the boy has blond hair and the girl has black hair in that game) and (2) be on an airship instead lol. And I'm pretty sure that isn't a Squenix game. Actually, heck, I don't think I recognize any of the top row aside from Tidus. Maybe...Secret of Evermore? Meanwhile though I wasn't even aware that NieR is a Squenix IP. | |

Meanwhile though I wasn't even aware that NieR is a Squenix IP. It's Chrono Cross from the og Playstation. I'm excited because the music from that game is incredible and the thought of possibly hearing Scars of Time (the opening theme) live has me so excited. | |

| I went to the 2pm showing today, and had a grand time! First off: I had REALLY GOOD seats. I was in the fifth row on the main floor. Actually, the seats might have been too close because I had to look up at the screen. It wasn't as bad as being in a movie theater front row, but I'm thinking maybe next time I'll splurge for box seats, like I did for my very first Square Enix concert, Dear Friends in Detroit. I don't know WHY people don't get there earlier. It was about 15 minutes to 2pm and the theater still was half empty. As it was, they likely started late - I didn't check my phone for the time but it sure felt like more time had passed than that. I went to the show mostly for Chrono Trigger and Kingdom Hearts. Hearing Final Fantasy songs was also nice, but I've been to Distant Worlds so many times I've lost count, so those weren't new for me. I knew going in that there would be a lot of songs I wouldn't recognize from not having played the games, but I wasn't worried because the composers at Square Enix are all hella talented, so I knew I'd enjoy the music anyway. I arrived at 1:15pm, and thought about getting in the merch line then, but it was all the way out the doors and up a staircase and well, I didn't want to miss any of the concert, or be rushing. So I waited until after the concert to hit the merch table. Unfortunately they sold out of programs while I was in line, but I did snag a tour keychain and a "Melodies of Life" music box. Anyway, because I don't have a program, I'm not entirely certain of the song titles of everything. Eric did announce the games they were from, and it was obvious from the movies anyway, but he didn't always announce the song title. As usual, I brought pen and paper and wrote down the tracks as they were played, but I don't have the titles for all of them, sorry! HERE WE GO!!! "One-Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy VII Y-A-W-N. No, hear me out: I've been to at least eight Final Fantasy concerts prior, and this song has been played at EVERY SINGLE BLASTED ONE. I know it's a fan favorite. I understand why they must play it. That doesn't mean I'm not tired of hearing it. FFVII has never been a favorite of mine, and as good as this song is (I won't deny it's an excellent song), I'm just TIRED of it. I think Eric was smart in putting this one first, rather than making it the encore piece. Also, only played Remake/Rebirth once, so my memory is hazy of them... some of the cutscenes shown I did not recognize, but like I said, memory hazy. "Main Theme" from Octopath Traveler I have not played Octopath at all, so I can't say much about this other than I did like it, and it made me want to play the game. I've heard Octopath Traveler is really good, so hopefully I'll find some spare money soon so I can buy the game. "The Weight of the World" from NieR: Automata Eric didn't announce the title for this one, but I recognized the theme from playing the NieR raids in Final Fantasy XIV. I love the music from those raids well enough that I have listened to Automata's OST in full, even though I've only played about 90 minutes of the game (why'd they have to make the beginning of that game so BRUTALLY hard? Yes, I am going to try it again on the easiest setting sometime). Anyway, this is a truly lovely theme and it was a joy to hear in concert. A theme from "Kingdom Hearts III Maybe from the series as a whole, but the title they splashed was KHIII. I definitely recognized the song, and it might have been the main theme from KHIII? but I'm not sure. I kinda remember the title music from KHIII and this wasn't it. Anyway, maybe I will get back to streaming Kingdom Hearts, because I'd like to replay IIII. "Meridian Dance" from Secret of Mana Someone in CoN chat went "Ooooh!" to this one when I shared the tracklist there, so I guess it's a fan favorite of at least one fan. "Zanarkand" from Final Fantasy X Another fan favorite, and the song that made me fall in love with the series. There was a time when I had heard this song TOO much and got tired of it; thankfully I'm back to appreciating it! A joy to hear it again. I think someone in front of me was crying during this one, because I thought I heard sniffles. "Encounter with the Seven Heroes" from Romancing Saga Vaguely recalling this one, mostly from watching the gameplay movie. I did enjoy this, but again, have never played the game, and what I heard today is fading from memory, so... guess I'll just have to play the game sometime so I can go "OH YEAH THAT SONG!" "Away" from Final Fantasy XVI AWAAAAAAAAY!!! AWAAAAAAAAAY!!! TBH, I rather like the live concert version better than the actual game version. This is such an epic song, and I'm glad they played a piece from XVI. I would have been happy with "Find the Flame", too, but I think this one ekes out over "Find the Flame" for me by juuuuuuuuust a smidgen. So yes, happy to hear this! "Vector to the Heavens" from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Oh, Shion... </3. I do own the DS version of the game, but it's a shame they couldn't remake it for the PS4 compilation and had to do a movie instead. I *liked* this game, and I like this song. Very good choice, here. "Odio & Megalomania" from Live A Live At every Square Enix concert, there is always one song that makes the ticket price worth it. For me, it was this song, the last one played before the intermission. I have not played this game or heard its music before, but I'm well familiar with Yoko Shimomura's work from Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XV. She's an excellent composer, and this song was AMAZING. It is rare that I actually say a verbal "wow" after hearing a song in concert, but I did for this one. "Hikari" from the Kingdom Hearts series Oops, my eyes are tearing up again just typing this, like they did when I heard this one. This was a really special song for me. Obviously this was the orchestral version, but it's just so breathtakingly beautiful. It feels full of hope but also longing, in a way. So of course I cried. a song from Final Fantasy Tactics, perhaps the Main Theme I'm JUST NOW playing this game, so I kept my eyes closed during most of the movie because of potential spoilers. So yeah, I recognized the theme, and would have recognized it anyway even not having played Tactics thanks to the Ivalice raids in FFXIV. It's a good song, and I enjoyed hearing it. a song from NieR: Replicant I think this was the NieR song I hadn't heard before? So I can't tell you what the title is, but it's NieR music so it was good, naturally. I was intrigued by the gameplay a bit. I know some of the Automata characters from them showing up in FF Brave Exvius (hey Eric, how about some music from that sometime?) and Star Ocean: Anamnesis. So watching the movie of Replicant, I was all A song from Trials of Mana What I loved about this concert is that after many of the songs, there was at least one person in the audience yelling "THANK YOU!" or clapping wildly, and that happened with this one, too. Again, I think I recognized the characters from Brave Exvius tie-ins, and it's possible I heard this song then. Unfortunately I don't recall this song much. another song from Octopath Traveler I wish I could have caught the title for this one, because I know some of my friends are big fans of the game and it would be fun to tell them "hey, I heard $X in concert!". Alas, the title wasn't announced. Um, my memory is hazy but I think this might have been a battle theme? But not as driving as many of Final Fantasy's battle themes... sorry, I can't be of more help here. "Wind Scene" and "Frog's Theme" from Chrono Trigger Yay, Eric announced the names of these! I didn't need the name of the second half of the song because I recognized Frog's Theme immediately, plus, well, he was on the screen. another song or two from Chrono Trigger Eric didn't announce the names of these tracks but I am pretty sure one is Schala's Theme because she was on the screen. I think there might have been another theme played during this, but it's been years since I've played Chrono Trigger, so I can't tell you what it is. "Soaring" from Xenogears Way back in the day, I played some Xenogears and remember really liking it, so it was good to hear a song from this game, though I can't say I remembered it. This was another one someone yelled "THANK YOU!" for. a song from NieR: Replicant Okay, I think this was the other NieR song I recognized. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it plays in FFXIV's Tower at Paradigm Breach. Another really good song that I liked hearing. a song from Chrono Cross This one seemed short? But good. Was it a good final song? Eh, I've heard some better, more impactful ones at Square Enix concerts. I have not played Chrono Cross but I think I own it, so might have to play it sometime. AND FOR THE ENCORE: because you knew there'd be one: Final Fantasy Battle Themes!!! NEW ARRANGMENT! Starting off with "Battle on the Big Bridge" from FFV Then, I'm pretty sure it was "Fight with Seymour" from FFX but they chose to show clips of fighting Sin? so maybe I am mistaken? "Blinded by Light" from Final Fantasy XIII. Good to see Lightning represented! "Let the Battles Begin!" from Final Fantasy VII "Victory Theme" from the Final Fantasy series A fitting end to the show. I've heard them do battle arrangements as an encore before, but this was a new arrangement to my ears. ------------- Disappointment: Merch, really. I had hoped to buy some CDs while there, but they have yet to make a CD for this concert tour. I had REALLY hoped to pick up Chrono Trigger's OST, but they just had it on LP. I considered picking up FFXVI's OST but it was pricey, and as much as I like the music, I'm fine with the tracks on the latest Distant Worlds CD. They did have some NieR CDs, but again, too much money for me for a game I haven't played myself, so I opted not to get them. I was sad the programs sold out before I could get one, because maybe they would have had the track listing in there and I could have gotten the song titles for everyone? But it is what it is. ------------- One song I really would have liked to hear: "Torn from the Heavens/The Dark Colossus Destroys All (Medley)" from the Puppet's Bunker raid in FFXIV (NieR crossover raid). This is such an epic song and I would have LOVED to hear the choir singing on this. Also, I highly doubt I will ever heard Brave Exvius music in concert but dammit, that game had some really great music and I have to give a shout-out to Noriyasu Agematsu for the fantastic work he did on that game. | |
