New Screens of the PSX FF Ports

Final Fantasy I
http://www.gamesarefun.com/newspro....,44012,

Some screenshots of the new Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II ports to the PlayStation. The screens show some shots of the new opening FMV, and some from the actual updated gameplay. This again raises the question: Will you spend $40-$50 on games you beat on your NES?

TGRamuh I, for one, am more than willing to part with the cash, particularly to get my hands on the remake of FF1.  I wasn't impressed with FF2 when I played it on an NES emulator, but what's the worst that can happen?  Have it be just as bad?  At least there'll still be FF1 to fall back on, which I thought was a good game in the first place, and has the potential to be made really cool in a remake like this.

Not only has Square completely redone the graphics (they look like the pictures from the WSC remakes of 1-3, actually), but from what I've heard they're also tweaking the music and gameplay ("Ineffective", anyone?), and doing some major work to the story, including "event scenes".  Who knows, maybe in the new version, you won't have to walk up to and -talk- to the final boss to initiate the battle.

Besides, my old NES cart's battery died a long time ago, and I'm too lazy to try and replace it.  While emulators work fine, there's something about playing it on a console that isn't quite duplicated on a PC.  As long as they manage not to introduce any spectacular amounts of lag into the two games, I don't see how they can go wrong.

Kappa the Imp Looks like they completely redid the graphics and now they look great.  The event scenes do sound like a good insert as well.  Sure, I'll money for ports, anytime.

SECProto I would buy it but for one thing: I have no PS or PS2. And i'd just be playing it on and emulator. So, I doubt I will be.

Neal No chance that I'm going to buy the games.  While I think they're good, and it's cool that they're revamping the graphics, it's outdated on two accounts.  They're releasing it for PSX when the PS2 is available, and the graphics are outdated by two systems.  While obviously graphics don't make the game, if they're going to revamp them a little bit, might as well go the extra mile and revamp them a bit more, to at least more than 16 bits (and if it's higher than that, then more than 32).  I can just as easily pick up a translated ROM as I can buy a compilation when it comes out.

Tiddles I'll never forget a sparkling Digitiser response to someone claiming the Jaguar was as good as the N64 because they were both 64-bit: "That's like saying a shopping trolley is as fast as a Ferrari because they've both got four wheels."

The point is, talking about a game in terms of being 16-bit or 32-bit is meaningless.  The PC is still a 32-bit machine, yet badly eclipses every console that comes out, in graphics terms, not long after release.

I understand what you mean, though, regarding the graphics "standard" that relates to the x-bit eras.  The important thing to remember is this: it takes an awful, awful, awful lot more time and money to render a game fully in 3D, for a company which is, if I remember correctly, still financially reeling from the failure of FF:TSW.  They've already redrawn 2D graphics for these games for their Wonderswan Color releases in Japan; why not bring them to a wider audience?

Considering, then, that it would not be feasible for the graphics to be majorly updated, it would be silly to make this a PS2 game rather than a PS1 game.  The PS1 can easily handle it, and PS2s are backward compatible.  Why alienate people who can't afford or don't want the newer console, when it will yield no improvement?

There are a good deal of players who have never played Final Fantasy 1, either because they're too young, or it hasn't been released in their country *cough*.  And more so Final Fantasy 2, never having made it outside of Japan so far.  This is an inexpensive way (for Square, and probably for consumers) to introduce people to Final Fantasy heritage.  And while I understand that not everyone will be interested, particularly owners of NES FF1 or fans of emulation, I still think it's a worthwhile release, even if it is a thinly veiled plea from Square for a little extra cash.

That said, I don't see many people buying both for full price.  I can only assume that, if released individually, these will be budget titles (like PSX FF6 in the UK, which came with a PS2 FF10 demo) or released together, at least in the West.  Otherwise, it's a bit of a skank-faced rip-off.
