New Hardware Cavalcade: The CoNcast Episode 13

Podcast
While we fall behind on news, we keep up on CoNcasts, so that's something. Wait... no, we're a week late on this episode of the CoNcast too, aren't we? Well, isn't that fabulous.

This is lucky episode thirteen, and as luck would have it, we couldn't manage to get a full set of four this week. What's going on in the world? Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! Carrying on, though, Tiddles, lasz and I took it upon ourselves to put out a good show talking about some of the big hardware news that has come out recently, as well as the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. We cover the updated Playstation 4 release date in Japan, the announcement of the Vita TV, and the interestingly-shaped Nintendo 2DS, some of the big games we expect to see out of TGS, and we throw in a lot of silliness about fast food and other random topics.

To wrap up both this news post about the podcast and the recording itself, we announce the opening of the CoNcast mailbag. If you've got something to harass us about specific to the CoNcast, such as an argument against something we said, a topic you want us to cover, or a plea to join us on an upcoming episode, the mailbag is the place to do it. You can yell at us via email using [email protected]; of course, we'll be happy to take your feedback through any of our other points of contact as well, but the email address will be the most direct and noticeable way to make your opinion heard.

If you're feeling lucky yourself, download it now. If you're feeling less than lucky, that's probably all the more reason to hit that link.

Glenn Magus Harvey Replying to a few things:

1a. The Ys series is actually named after the mythological city of Ker Ys. That said, when I first found out about it, I pronounced it "weiss"...oops. Oh well.
1b. Ys 3 and Ys 4 both had like two different versions produced by external developers, and then both versions of each got retconned out with the release of internally-developed Oath in Felghana (new official Ys 3) and an official Ys 4 whose name I've forgotten.
1c. I think new Ys 4 runs on the similar engine, rather than the bump system.
1d. My favorite thing about the Ys games is that, at least for the games that play like typical action RPGs, they are like action RPG perfection. I've played Oath and Origin and this applies to both. They're just really, really, really well designed, in my opinion. They have a solid level of challenge but they also give you the means to learn the gameplay. The visual environments are highly detailed 3D and avoid both overly colorful settings and overly dull surroundings. And the music is always top-notch.

2. I thought the big blockbuster game for XBox 360 in Japan was Idolmaster, not Blue Dragon. Or was that also on PS3?

3a. I am liking this Vita TV thing. I don't use the TV features -- I don't use Netflix, for example, and heck, I rarely even watch TV -- but the idea of getting PSV games onto a big screen attracts my attention.
3b. It can play PSV and PSN games...can it also play PSP games? (By play I also mean saving capabilities.) If so, I might actually want to pick up a VTV and some PSP games.
3c. What kind of connector does it use to connect to a TV? Can it be used with a desktop computer monitor?

4. When someone said "Apple market" to mean Apple store, I suddenly just then realized how much these companies are angling for monopoly power in the entertainment media market.

5. The 2DS doesn't sound like my thing at all. Despite the 3DS and DS and GBA all being systems I've been interested in. That said, I'm still probably not going to get any of the major consoles but the Wii U is a slightly less improbable possibility than the PS4 or XB1.

6. Since this CoNcast came out, Valve has announced the Steambox and a Steam controller that works with both the Steambox and with the PC. Apparently the controller can successfully imitate PC controls, making (or hopefully making?) every game they have playable on said controller. I don't know how that'll work, though I'm curious what y'all have to say about these announcements.
