I Promised Geeky Stats for You All:

Caves of Narshe Site News
As Neal mentioned yesterday, these forums have now hit 20,000 posts. I promised the possibility of more fun stats today, and I just thought I would oblige.

The stats program for our website categorizes traffic to the site on several categories. Briefly, here's a rundown of how that works:

Quote
Hits represent the total number of requests made to the server during the given time period (month, day, hour etc.). This is the total of all pages, images, etc. that the user gets - so, if the user visits a page that has four images, the hit total is five.

Files represent the total number of hits (requests) that actually resulted in something being sent back to the user. Not all hits will send data, such as 404-Not Found requests and requests for pages that are already in the browsers cache.

Sites is the number of unique IP addresses/hostnames that made requests to the server.

Visits occur when some remote site makes a request for a page on your server for the first time. As long as the same site keeps making requests within a given timeout period, they will all be considered part of the same Visit.

Pages are those URLs that would be considered the actual page being requested, and not all of the individual items that make it up (such as graphics and audio clips). Some people call this metric page views or page impressions, and defaults to any URL that has an extension of .htm, .html or .cgi.

Why is this important, you ask? Well, it will help you understand the following numbers:

Quote
October 2003 Stats
Sites: 32457
Visits: 27542
Pages: 129633
Files: 1664567
Hits: 2419459

Now, you might be wondering why that info is important. More likely, you've already figured it out. But for the sake of argument, I'll spell it out here: each one of those numbers is the highest the site has ever recorded. Ever. The basic upshot is that October of 2003 has been, yet again, the biggest month for traffic that the site has ever had. Several months this year have had high numbers in one category or another, but October is the first month that we have ever set records in every category across the board.

In other news, while October was a relatively quiet month in chat, chatstats will show you one fun little fact; since we first started tracking chat stats in January of 2002, we have logged over one million lines in channel #narshe.

Thanks to all the loyal visitors, yet again, who have made this possible!

Phoenix Hooray!

Those numbers are incredible; I take them as a sign that CoN will just keep growing and growing in the future.

Cheers to every forum, chat, and site regular,
and cheers to Josh for starting it all for us. ^_^

Watch us Grow (Hey, that was the motto for my High School's football team)
But unlike my HS's football team, CoN will actually do it.
Keep it coming people thumbup.gif

If I get what you're asking, here are some recent monthly totals for new forum members.

23 new members in October.
24 new members in September.
39 new members in August (!).
36 new members in July.
28 new members in June.

The summer months are usually our busiest. It's definitely true in chat, and seems to be that way at the forums, though posts have been plentiful lately.

Edit
And since I'm taking the opportunity to talk about stats in chat as well, check out the [dohtml]<a href="http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/chat/stats/">offical chatstats</a>[/dohtml]. Maybe it'll convince more people to come in. smile.gif
Del SComment 6: 2003-11-01 20:55
Del S so, how do you get chat to work then?

Moderator Edit
First thing is, post on topic. Chat doesn't work for those who don't. -R51

And posted. I'm just wondering, do we get a lot of members who sign up but then never post?

Oh, and hip hop hurray! ohmy.gif
TiddlesComment 10: 2003-11-02 13:14
Tiddles The stats come from the memberlist, which doesn't count people who've never posted. Look for yourself. All of those 150 people have contributed or asked something.

Quite obviously, they haven't all become regulars, not least because not everyone wants to be a regular on an FF forum. I defy you to find a forum with that kind of retention. It's also difficult to measure who's "sticking around" as an exact figure, given that people leave and return, and some people just post very infrequently anyway. The best thing you can do is head for the memberlist, sort by reg. date descending, and see how many names you remember.

We aren't the biggest FF site, by a long way. That's the point, in some ways. This forum isn't a free-for-all "Who can make the most posts that only say 'lol'" affair. I encourage you to read Iain Peregrine's comment in the 20000 post thread for some backup to that.

But the point is this: our figures are huge compared to our own past figures. For reference, here are the figures from October 2002, one year ago:

Rubicant It's the fact that I host you guys that gets so many visitors. They hear that the MIGHTY Bill is hosting you at his FORTRESS OF GAMING GOODNESS, opgaming.com, and they flock here to celebrate in my grandness.

Your welcome.

Narratorway Outta pure curiosity, where do you think the CoN stands on the list of FF sites out there Top Cat (or any of the other staff for that matter)? Personal opinion o course. I figure once you get rid of all the sites with 'Final Fantasy' in the url, it's pretty high up, if not higher. thumbup.gif
