Giving Thanks for Gaming: The CoNcast Episode 17

Podcast
This week is Thanksgiving, here in America, so what better time to talk about all the things that make us thankful for the year in gaming? To make it all the better, we invited three people who don't celebrate Thanksgiving in November (because Jav is a Canadian, and Tiddles and new-boy Stiltzkin are two thankless Englishmen) to give their own in-depth feelings about being forced to be thankful for an American holiday.

We cover some big name titles, as you might expect, from Bioshock Infinite to The Last of Us and even the latest Phoenix Wright. Of course, we've got a smidgen of time for Square Enix, too, because we can't give up on them fully. We're in the holiday spirit!

Glenn Magus Harvey I approve of the pun.

I'm thankful for Eryi's Action getting released as I mentioned elsewhere like just now, but perhaps I've quite more enjoyed 100% Orange Juice. It's a silly and very random board game, but it's a simple little thing that you can drag one to three other people into and have a fun time. And it introduced me to characters from the other Orange_Juice games. Which is cool. It's got a fun little simple system that just makes intuitive sense to play through. I really hope 100% OJ gets greenlit soon!

More importantly though is that Carpe Fulgur's Project 4 was revealed...and revealed to be The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky: the Second Chapter. Along with this reveal is the reveal that the First Chapter is coming to Steam this winter -- I'm still waiting intently for it! -- and then the Second Chapter is due sometime next year.

In other long-awaited news, Terraria finally got its big version 1.2 update. Followed almost immediately by a Halloween update, no less. Now I might actually need to get back to playing this game...

Also, former Mega Man series director Keiji Inafune announced his definitely-not-Mega-Man game, Mighty No. 9. He threw it up on kickstarter, and in a month he raised over US$4 million. And it spawned this really touching comic.

That was only the second Kickstarter I've backed. The first is a project I found out a long time ago and which the creator finally got around to making a thing I guess, which is why he threw it up on Kickstarter: Legend of Iya. It barely made its target, and that was satisfying to see.

I hope to enjoy the soundtracks of both these kickstarter'd games pretty soon.

I can definitely see what you mean there. I've heard a similar complaint from some speedrunners, for what it's worth -- some people say that sequence breaking isn't sequence breaking unless it's unintended, and consequently see things like Metroid Zero Mission's designed SB opportunities to be undesirable.

Anyhow, I'm also thankful for the Caves of Narshe database and forum.

Having been here for over ten years now, I say it was worth it. The CoNcast is just icing on a cake of great discussions and a sense of community that I could come back to time and again.

sweetdude I think Bioshock Infinite is the best game to come out in ages, maybe like 10 years. I can't think of another game that's so completely well-rounded and flawless. It's really fun to play, the story and characters are as strong as any I've seen, and the gameplay has done that thing that so few games can pull off where everything is useful and different people playing it will result in different strategies and character builds. The game also looks great and not just in terms of definition but also costumes, landscapes, grandness... It's a gem of a game. Saying it's a benchmark is a bit of a cliche but what the hell, it is. Half-Life 3 be warned. And be released.
