Final Fantasy XII Makes Me Sad

General Final Fantasy
Games Are Fun have released some news that has the potential to annoy, if you are anything like me. Luckily, they wrapped it in some fairly interesting new screenshots and art from Final Fantasy XII. The highlights of the screenshots, to me anyway, are seeing the airship and chocobo shots, all of which are beautifully rendered (even though the chocobo has gotten a bit creepy-looking).

What's the bad news? Well, if you are a diehard Final Fantasy Tactics fan like I am, you may be saddened to learn that FFXII is set in Ivalice. Yes, Ivalice, as referenced in both FFT and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. According to the GAF article, the Ivalice is the one from FFTA, which based on my limited FFTA play seems to be very different than the one in which Ramza lived. However, if this turns out to be incorrect and Squenix plans to use FFT's Ivalice, it could be disasterous to the legend of FF Tactics. In this writer's humble opinion, of course.

Here's hoping for the best.

Silent Moon I really don't mind the Ivalice thing, but with the character design and the the animal-like population, FFXII looks a lot like FFIX.

But isn't FFXII also going to have Dangaas? That's from FFT Advanced, right? Maybe XII just going to be some sort of spin-off to Tactics Advanced.
Dark PaladinComment 2: 2003-11-20 20:25
Dark Paladin I feel the same. It's okay to reference certain locations and other things from former FFs, like FFIX did alot of, but to do what seems like a spinoff is a bit much.
Leave the spinoffs and sequels to FanFic writers.

You weren't kidding about the chocobo.
Del SComment 3: 2003-11-20 21:08
Del S Ivalice? never heard of it...

but that chocobos EVIL!

having never palyed tactics i can say hooray, nothings gettign wrecked for me, oh drat, its nowehre original, ho hum, yada yada yada...

but it seems the lead females going to be a la Dagger IMO. ESPECIALLY considering the cheeky wee grin the lead males got... if hes got a tail then we're all doomed!
deleterfxComment 4: 2003-11-20 21:17
deleterfx I wouldnt say its gonna be wrecked for me, even though I am a superfan of FFT, but that does kind of give it a "spin-offish" pretense...
Tidu-whoComment 5: 2003-11-21 03:11
Tidu-who Yeah, I definitely agree with the FF9 likeness. It looks like an FF9 world set with FF10 graphics.
TiddlesComment 6: 2003-11-21 08:24
Tiddles I still haven't played FFT, but it seems like it would be much worse for FF12 itself were it based on the FFTA world, since it seems to have been so widely ridiculed, especially in the plot department.

It seems to me that Square is hurting for new ideas quite badly because, other than the online and mostly unrelated FF11, this is effectively two FF sequels in a row now, and to their most recent games, plus a third sequel, to an older game, in the form of a movie. And to combine in a little from the other news post, is Uematsu losing interest as well? Could it be that the Final Fantasy series is dying? (Or long since dead, but stuffed and nailed up to be used only as a deeply uninnovative cash cow?)
Ninja DuckComment 7: 2003-11-27 01:36
Ninja Duck I wonder how long they're going to keep up this trend of calling worlds "Ivalice"? Does it translate to anything? To my memory, all the previous FF worlds (including the movie) were called something generic like Gaia...
karasumanComment 8: 2003-11-27 03:51
karasuman Wow, and here I was looking forward to FFXII. happy.gif

I never got through Tactics, so the references would probably go right over my head...but the last thing I want is another game like FFIX. *shudder* I hate animal-like characters. One per game is plenty for me.
Kappa the ImpComment 9: 2003-11-27 16:00
Kappa the Imp Good lord! They've shoved enough poles up FFT's butt after FFTA, but now this? How can they use Ivalice again? And I thought Final Fantasy was going to take a turn for the better. Sure, Tactics was probably one of my favorite in the Final Fantasy series, but to take a trip back to Ivalice is a little too much for me.
Ninja DuckComment 10: 2003-11-27 17:42
Ninja Duck And what's up with the screenshot of the girl who looks just a little too much like Tidus picking her nose?

Pick me a winner. Yeah, that is kind of weird. I hope SquareEnix doesn't screw up. Anyway, the graphics look great. I know that I will be getting this game

Yasumi Matsuno, the director of both those titles, is also in charge of FFXII's development, and he hinted in the past that his newest project would tie in closely with FFTA.

Oh no. I just read this on that web-site R51 showed us. I hope they don't make it too closely related to final fantasy tactics advance. I like the game, but I hate the story that a kid reads a book and gets trapped in a final fantasy world. I thought that made the game kind of dull. Well, I guess I can only wait.
GamblingCatComment 12: 2004-04-30 22:09
GamblingCat I would hope it is set in FFTA's Ivalice, mainly because i have no played the PSX version, but if I find it, I will buy it or rent the game to see if it is really good as some people say.
