Final Fantasy I and II Confirmed for This Summer

Final Fantasy I
Good news for those gamers who haven't grabbed one of the FF1/FF2 remakes yet and who own a PSP: Final Fantasy I and II are heading your way this summer.

Originally announced only for Japan, the remastered versions of the first two games in our favourite series will mark the twentieth anniversary of Final Fantasy. The original Final Fantasy will appear on 26 June 2007, followed shortly by Final Fantasy II on 24 July. Both games will go for $29.99.

Honestly, I have a hard time getting excited over this. You can already buy these games together on the original Playstation for far less than the combined price of $60, and can't you rip PS1 games onto memory sticks if you just have to make them portable?

I just don't see the appeal. Square is releasing two of the weaker games in the series separately at an expensive price for a handheld no one can afford to own. Why bother?

Barrylocke Unless they are in 3d or they had a heck of a lot of new stuff, I don't see the appeal either, especially since they're being sold separately. They were good, but not $30 each good.

yelanates Well, I see the *point*, even if I don't personally agree with it.

See, it's the twentieth anniversary of Final Fantasy, so they want to do something special. And, looking at the graphics, they are a significant upgrade from, although similar to, the PSX/GBA graphics.

They're also adding all the Omake and FMVs from the PSX versions, the dungeons from the BGA ones, and NEW dungeons. So, it';s not a TOTAL rip-off.

Their reasoning, I think, is that those poor PSP owners don't have enough Final Fantasy. Or maybe that if there are a bunch of people that want to play FFT:SS but don't want to get a PSP just for that, this will persuade them. Whatever.

Since I will be getting a PSP to play FFTSS for Christmas for myself, I might pick up one of these. But not both.

RoughknightVII I've grabbed both of the Dawn of Souls and Origin copies and frankly, I was delighted to see the differences such as graphic updates and new dungeons and gameplay (I guess?) but now they're making ANOTHER remake! Honestly, unless it's updated either more, it's worthless... Plus, they're being sold seperately, which is a big mistake on Square's part... I'm disappointed...

Check out the screenshots for this game. The only thing I want to point out is... the graphics look awesome! This is a huge argument in favor of those who love 2d RPGs. Check out how detailed everything is, without being pseudo-3d or pixellated.

You're right, the monster sprites especially are nuts. Absolutely gorgeous.

I noticed that the DoS dungeons appear to still be in play, too, based on the screenshot of the barren town with the two robots.
