Final Fantasy Dissidia: Character Roundup

Dissida: Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy Dissidia actually had some footage released recently, ahead of it's projected December 2008 Japanese release date. Dissidia is described as an action-based fighting game with RPG elements and featuring two characters from each of the first 10 games, a protagonist and a villain. Overall, though, it's likely to be the FF answer to Super Smash Bros. in that it features a number of characters from different universes fighting each other, and there might even be a plot this year.

What is known, is that the character list has a number of confirmed cast members. Not every game has both characters revealed yet, the bad guys being wheeled out for some games, but in those cases it's pretty blatant who the "Other" one will be, and in one case, the other one is a bit puzzling really. It's probably a safe bet to assume that on top of these 20 there may be secret characters as well, but don't count on it. And without further ado, here are the ones you can count on seeing.

From Final Fantasy: Warrior of Light and Garland
The Warrior of Light and Garland, though both fighters, have some differences. The former uses swordplay and shield, a possible balance between offensive and defensive play, whilst Garland has a sword that can become a battle axe, for an ever changing but from the look of it offence-heavy fighting style. The arena where they fight appears to be the Chaos Shrine, location of the final boss battle of Final Fantasy.

From Final Fantasy II: Firion and Emperor Mateus Palamecia
Firion's fighting style seems to revolve around versatility, able to change weapons mid-battle. He has access to swords, spears and bows amongst other weapons, a veritable walking armoury. Mateus meanwhile appears to use magical attacks predominately, and is able to transform into the Emperor of Hell. Their battleground seems to be Pandaemonium, capital of Hell and twinned with Cardiff.

From Final Fantasy III: Onion Knight and Cloud of Darkness
The Onion Knight is apparently able to change jobs mid-battle, with Sage and Ninja confirmed so far. Others are likely, but only those are confirmed. The Cloud of Darkness meanwhile is, in case you didn't know, actually a woman giving Ultimecia a run for her money in the "ridiculously revealing costume" stakes. Her appearance has altered to have pale instead of orange or green skin, but she can apparently transform into the green-skinned variation seen in FF3 DS. The fight between the two occurs in FF3's World of Darkness.

From Final Fantasy IV: Golbez
Confirmed in a trailer at Square Enix's DKΣ3713 event (The name referenced the games displayed and also is a fun game to guess exaclty which games it in fact had at it! Don't google, that's cheating.), nothing has been revealed about Golbez except his presence but it's likely he'll fight Cecil.

From Final Fantasy V: ExDeath
Like Golbez, nothing confirmed and revealed only in the trailer at DKΣ3713. Likely to fight Bartz.

From Final Fantasy VI: Kefka
Kefka's confirmation in the game came at, you guessed it, DKΣ3713, and tells us the same as it told us about Golbez and ExDeath, except that Kefka apparently hints at his opponent being female. It's probably safe to bet it's not Relm or a post-op Locke.

From Final Fantasy VII: Sephiroth
No one should be surprised at this one. His opponent hasn't been announced but really, who was it the other seventy times they put him in a sequel or spin-off?

From Final Fantasy VIII: Squall and Ultimecia
Gunblade-wielding social recluse mercenary Squall fights with his Gunblade of course, and can use his Renzokuken attack as well as transform his weapon into the Lionheart. Ultimecia meanwhile uses swords and axes made from magic, as well as time manipulation and possibly even summoning and junctioning. Their battle occurs in Ultimecia's castle.

From Final Fantasy IX: Zidane and Kuja
The rules are simple. Two Monkey Enter, One Monkey Leave. The Genome brothers face off in Memoria, and apparently both use their Trance forms in combat.

From Final Fantasy X: Tidus and Jecht
Yeah, you read that right, Jecht. Not Seymour. Tidus fights his dad with his overdrives, whilst Jecht can transform into the Final Aeon, which might actually explain this somewhat bizarre pairing. The creators have stated they seek to use this as a "What-if" scenario as well as expand the interaction between the two characters.

From Star Wars: Nobody
And hooray for that.

BlitzSage They needed to put in Kain, Cloud, Sabin, and Shadow. That would make me want to play it.

Harlequin Well, this is going for the PSP, so I'm probably not going to get it...and I don't see how this could ever be a response to SB. It doesn't seem to be multiplayer, which is sorta like being stuck with the solo story mode of any fighting game. I think a large appeal of a game like this should be a multiplayer mode, so people could have Dissidia tournaments, or something. I have no idea if the PSP has any connection stuff like the DS or GBA's have, so I don't know if multiplayer would even be possible.

And the two character per game is limiting, so I don't think you're going to be buying this, BlitzSage.

(Relm is so going to be a secret character. It's a gut feeling I have.)

And plot? What plot? I thought this was just eye candy, but I think even that is lacking. Tidus and Squall look like they're 14.
Death PenaltyComment 3: 2008-08-09 05:11
Death Penalty At first i was really excited for this game, because I love the basic idea. But the more I hear about it, the less I like it.

First of all, I had hoped for a console release. Like a smash bros for FF. Secondly, there are just too many good characters from all these games, to the point that I could easily name off three times as many that I would like to see in the game.
laszlowComment 4: 2008-08-09 05:18
laszlow I think that everyone (and I mean everyone including me, you, my dog, and your mother) is setting their expectations too high for this game. It's meant to be fanservice, and it looks like very nifty and visually impressive fanservice. But, the better the game's visuals and mechanics, the harder and harder it is to include a bunch of characters - making a good game means that much more effort. And because every FF fan from here to Shibuya wants ALL of their favorite characters in, there's no way anyone will be satisfied because X made it in instead of Y. For me, X is probably Firion and Y could be Kain, Celes, or any number of my favorite characters that won't make the final roster. That's all I got.
dont chocobos rule?Comment 5: 2008-08-09 06:02
dont chocobos rule? have they announced if you can fight other people from the games? i want to pit squall against everyone else....but mostly cloud. just to show that i could kick his @$$. but if you cant, that'd be very......not appealing to me.

Aaw, man! I wanted to fight all these staples of the Squenix community as an ATAT or something!

2 New Challengers Approach!
Chewie and an Ewok. tongue.gif

Soul Calibur was just doin' their thing, just cuz it didn't go over that great isn't a bad thing... they threw Link in the GC version of SCII back in the day, and that was all good...

Now back on topic:

Meh, in reality, if they were gonna add a non-FF character, it would probably be Sora or Riku from the KH franchise, or perhaps Chrono, which would cause all the little fanboys out there to simultanious have their pants explode.
MythrilShotgunComment 7: 2008-08-09 19:08
MythrilShotgun Crono would indeed make me geekasm, however, WHERE'S MY RAMZA!! I soo wanna see Ramza vs. Delita, I'm praying for those secret characters. Ramza with Yell, accumulate, ULTIMA!! Delita with Lightning Stab, Stasis Jab, HOLY EXPLOSION!!

Wait, will Golbez be on the "good" or "bad" guys? I'm assuming bad, but you know why it might not.

I wonder if there will be a pair of guys from Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest =P
BlitzSageComment 8: 2008-08-10 03:30
BlitzSage Yeah, I set my expectations a bit too high. I'm still gonna try it out though. I had it pictured some type of fighting game with FF characters. I'm thinking that they might be keeping some characters secret, it is quite a while till dec.

Is this game really PSP only? Cause that makes me really disappointed in squenix.

Or Sora and Riku, given the fact that Riku was an antagonist from time to time. Although, they might add some from TWEWY given the fact it has spiky haired emo kids(An FF trend) and a large cast of villains.

I hope its Celes that gets to fight Kefka, cause then he be like take that you traitor son of a submariner.

Edit: Still haven't figured out how to do quotes.

yelanates What I find interesting is that they're going with Golbez instead of the actual FINAL boss. Seems to me that Swuall should face off against Seifer, since Ultimecia is...well, um...lame.

I quote from Dark Paladin Danny in the older Dissida thread:

Quote
Also, transformation appears to be a big part of Dissidia what with Kuja and Zidane's Trance, Light Warrior's Knight form, Jecht's Final Aeon form, Ultimecia's Griever transformation, Palamecia's Hell Emperor Form and so on
Terra happens to have her Morph form, another reason I suspect her over Celes

It's quite obvious that Seifer doesn't have a second form, even if he is a better antagonist.

I think Ultimecia is lame too, but they'll probably find a transformation for her (possibly Griever?). You may think (but these just might be my thoughts) "Well, why doesn't Squall haver griever as a second form instead?" In a trailer, I saw him fight with his regular gunblade and Lionheart, so I'd assume his second form would just have him with Lionheart.

And about Golbez...I think they'd include him because he has a better connection to Cecil (who, let's face it, has a 100% chance of being the other character).

Yeah, Cecil is in for sure, and I would be surprised if Bartz and Terra weren't the ones for their games.

Golbez has more connection, but then I would argue for Xande for III. Gilgamesh for V?

Eh, it'll still probably be a decent game, lack of certain characters that *I* want to see aside. It'd be nifty if there were like 100 characters, but that wouldn't be practical, and many of them would be cookie cutter, etc.

Xande is just as last minute as Cloud of Darkness game wise and you only get a few hints of him, so all in all Cloud of Darkness is as fair a pick as Xande, also Xande can't transform

Gilgamesh while being a repetetive boss, unlike Zeromus, his master X-Death is constantly seen throughout the game, you fight him multiple times and talk to him mulitple times, add to that X-Death is more evil that Gil and Gil turns good after being punished by X-death

As for the whole last minute thing when it comes to Ultimecia, unlike Golbez who was just being guided by Zeromus, Ultimecia actually 100% took over Edea's mind, every word you hear possessed Edea/Adel speak is direct from Ultemecia, you're constantly talking to and fighting Ultimecia, while Zeromus was forcing Golbez but not actively INSIDE his mind controlling his every word and movement

HamedoComment 15: 2008-08-12 16:56
Hamedo I wish they could have thrown in some Tactics love. Forget Cid, Delita, or Ramza.... you could go completely unconventional and have something like:

Agrias v Zalbag

Olan v Dycedarg

Mustadio v St. Ajora

Besrodeo v The Impure King
