"Exclusivity Is in the Discussion" for FF XIII

Final Fantasy XIII
According to an interview with SCE France CEO Georges Fornay, the upcoming PS3 game Final Fantasy XIII may be available on more than one platform. This only qualifies as hearsay at the moment, but such words coming from the mouth of an important Sony executive are worth notice. The interview was published in the Francophone newspaper "Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace" ("The Final News from Alsace").

Sony's PS3 has had it rough recently, to say the least. Without going into too much detail, it can be surmised that the young system has been recently suffering from a great deal of criticism from game developers and publishers, from gaming news media, and from the gaming public themselves while the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft XBox 360 have been thriving in the new generation of video game consoles. Of particular note is the diminishing list of potential blockbusters for the PS3 - several extremely promising games that were originally billed as exclusive to Sony's new-gen hardware have announced releases for Microsoft's Xbox 360, among them Saints' Row, Assassin's Creed, and most recently Devil May Cry 4.

If this tidbit from France turns out to be true, then Sony will probably have yet another bevy of expectant gamers leave the PS3's bandwagon. Final Fantasy has been one of the most powerful franchises in video games since its birth, and its main-series games have been among the crown jewels in Sony's library from the past two generations. If FF XIII decides to shed its exclusivity status, then Sony is in even worse trouble than anyone may have suspected.

Hamedo Good post, Lasz. Thanks for sharing.

The FF franchise deciding to jump ship and sail on more than just the PS3 would be a huge blow to Sony. I think of the lost revenue, and the word "ouch" comes to mind.

sweetdude I think with the popularity of FFXII, Sony will do their absolute most to hold onto this one. "In discussion" probably means "grab SE's jacket and don't let go".

Recently, with Virgin and Sky falling out here in the UK, we Virgin customers can kind of extort our supplier with threats of switching to Sky - I got a free wireless router, and I know someone who managed to drop £50 of his monthly bill. I imagine it works the other way round too with Sky customers. The point is, with all these games deciding to go cross-platform, maybe SE are trying to get a better deal out of Sony much in the same way.

That's a very good point, and one I hadn't thought of.

DrkMagimaster282 All i can say being a hardcore Nintendo fan is...BOOYAH!!!

Nothing against Sony, it just has always seemed to me that Sony was a sort of intruder into the videogame world, and Square-Enix (Squaresoft then...) was one of the few things supporting it, and without Sony's exclusivity, The PS3 may crumble under its own demise!

But Sony's non-exclusivity will be an interesting twist to the company's future...i kinda expected something similiar, since it seemed they were having more of a bond going with the other two systems out. Final fantasy XI on the 360 recently, and the GBA ports and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales for DS (not to mention the future Crystal Chronicles for DS and Wii) told me SE was branching out to other systems.

Basically, this is good news to me, and was expected seeing the games going onto the other systems...

...Whaaaaat?

PS3 is undeniably reeling from all of this, but exclusive titles never really did mean anything but a more limited sales base just now. I think that SE, with their well known love of money, might very well have been leaking a few little rumours in hope of seeing huge wads of folding appear from somewhere.

What worries me is multi-platform could mean more FF7 or "compilations of".
