Clans in Final Fantasy XII

Square Enix
According to rpgfan.com, Famitsu magazine stated earlier this week that Final Fantasy XII will implement a clan system, not unlike the clan system from FF Tactics Advance. The clan system will allow the player to partake in specific quests provided by the clan and shop in clan-exclusive shops, plus possibly more unrevealed featues.

It seems unlikely to me that the clan system will feature prominently in the game's plot, as it would be make plot advancement seem somewhat awkward. I'm inclined to think that the clan system will allow the player to join one of multiple clans and have the clan serve as the means for taking part in sidequests, rather than drive the action as the clan/mission system did in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Still, love or hate this new clan system, a great deal of FF XII is a mystery as of now, so all we can do is speculate and hope that this next big title in our favorite RPG series lives up to its predecessors.

Final Fantasy XII, masterminded by Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics director Yasumi Matsuno, will be released in Japan on March 16th, 2006 and in the US on August 1st, 2006, barring future delays.

SilverFork I really wonder how that's gonna work here. Will you get to join more than one clan at a time, seeing as it appears your party's split up for much of the game? I only played a small amount of FFTA too, so I'm a bit foreign to the concept.

Not that I particularly plan on getting this game anyhow. My mind had already been made up before, but my opinion towards it kinda sank even more upon playing the demo. I really didn't enjoy that...

Glenn Magus Harvey Now, I haven't played the FFXII demo that I heard came out recently, but still...I've been looking for FFTA-style clan management RPing online for a while (see topic here), but it seems, according to this report, that that won't be the focus of the game. Well, then again, it's not a MMRPG.

What other types of FFTA-specific things will appear? Ezel? Judges and Laws? Tactical gameplay (I think not, judging from the few screenshots I've seen of it)? Totema?
ultimageComment 3: 2005-11-29 19:37
ultimage I'm wondering why they didn't just make for Gamecube... seems reasonable since it's based on a GBA game.
SilverForkComment 4: 2005-11-29 20:01
SilverFork But it's not based on a GBA game.

FFXII may take place in the same world as FF Tactics and Tactics Advance (Ivalice), and even contains a similar system that happens to be present in the latter, but the game isn't based on FFTA at all. Nowhere even close...
GamblingCatComment 5: 2005-11-29 23:56
GamblingCat Yay! it may (if there is no delays) come out on my birthday August 1st biggrin.gif next year! The clan system sounds interesting, but well have to wait and see what it is like.
ShotgunnovaComment 6: 2005-11-30 00:27
Shotgunnova Hmm, I'm wary of the clan idea, but this could end up being a well-executed display of fleshing out FFT's Proposition system. And since this is comin' out on the sixteenth of March, I may just buy myself an early birthday present...
ultimageComment 7: 2005-11-30 01:03
ultimage Silverfork, if it's uses not only the world but also has similar dynamics (clans), as well as races (none of which appear FFT for PS) then I'd have re-affirm my previous statement. FF XII is based on FFTA, ok? biggrin.gif
SilverForkComment 8: 2005-12-01 12:29
SilverFork But by saying "based on", it made it seem as if you were implying the two games could be related by more than just a few traits and are not indepedant of each other, especially by suggesting it should be on the GameCube. The other FF games, which also share many features, dynamics, and races would not be said to be "based on" one another (except X and X-2, plus the VII gaiden). In other words, the entirety of FFXII isn't grounded in FFTA, but rather contains several nods to it and FFT.

A better, or less confusing statement would probably be "borrows from."

laszlow FF XII is not based off of FFTA. There is no kingdom of Dalamasca, no Archadian empire, no sky pirates, and no Seeqs in Tactics Advance, while there are no Judges, no Nu Mou, and no modern world/Grimoire world in FF XII. Yasumi Matsuno was a major director, producer, and scenario planner for Tactics, Tactics Advance, and Vagrant Story, and he borrows many ideas and names from his earlier games to use in FF XII. FF XII is NOT based off of Tactics Advance.
strikerboltComment 10: 2005-12-01 20:57
strikerbolt I liked the clan system in FFTA. My interest in this installment has raised now. This morning I wasn't expecting much since the main character seems worse than Tidus. Of course, I can't really make any judgements until it comes out...

There are no Nu Mou? How's the...well, I guess Matsuno could simply use the "clan" concept, without necessarily using any of the character classes or other gameplay aspects of FFTA.

I can see why there wouldn't be a Grimoire/real world dichotomy, of course.

I don't agree wholly with that. Well, the Judges part at least.

I was reading Game Informer Magazine yesterday, and I saw a screenshot with the ingame text: "We Judges keep order" or something of that nature. So, naturally, I took it to the internet.

The following was taken from the GameSpy website. I've seen similar information all over.

Quote
Getting back to Matsuno, the game contains many elements he introduced in Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced. Of course there will be Chocobos, Moogles, and the like, but there will also be Bangaa, Viera, and judges. The Bangaa and Viera are races that debuted in FFTA, while judges were knights that maintained order in that game's version of Ivalice. Unlike the noble judges of FFTA, the judges are your adversaries. "They are judges of terror," says Matsuno. The character depicted in the game's logo is one of these fearsome judges.

So, yes, Judges to make an appearance. Just in a different light.

Whoa...does that mean that the plot won't suck this time? Maybe they'll end up with a plot somewhat related to the "Final Fantasy Advance: The Book of Hope" story that I'm currently creating out of frustration with the plot of FFTA.
