A Change of Pace: CoNcast Episode Four

Podcast
Things are a little different this time around for the CoNcast. Lasz took the day off, so, for the first time we're rounding out our four with a special guest: longtime CoN member Jav, also known as Dragon Fire here at the forums. Jav's delivered to us for this episode a brand new, never-before-heard theme tune, and he joins me, Tiddles, and DP to talk about it a bit.

While we're on the subject of music, we delve into the concept of the gaming-related mobile phone ringtone. It seems like anyone who really wants to make sure that everyone knows they're a Final Fantasy fan has a version of the victory fanfare on their mobile, so we instead have a look deeper to see what other tracks would make good ringtones for the gamer who always has their phone on their person, both from within the Final Fantasy series and further out into gaming as a whole.

We're talking about so much media this time around that you get extra links. First, of course, to the podcast itself, but then we have two others! If you want to hear the full version of Jav's chiptune theme, called "Neko Neko Mawaii," we've got it on YouTube, and then we've also made a YouTube playlist of all of the music we talked about ringtone-ifying as well. Enjoy!

Death Penalty Things that changed: cast, subject matter.

Things that didn't change: Tiddles' snarkiness, everyone harass DP, wandering so far off topic at times one forgets what the topic was.

All in all, a good week!

Glenn Magus Harvey FFT Fanfare - this would work, I guess.
FFT Victory fanfare - I reserve this track for "mission accomplished" moments. I don't think it'd be appropriate as a "here's a situation you need to deal with" tone.
Nokia original ringtone - lol
Sonic 3 invincibility music - sounds like the sort of thing that is annoying enough that you'd want to answer it immediately but you run into the risk of annoying everyone else around you.
Navi "Hey, listen!" - I'm honestly not sure what to say about this...other than it seems oddly appropriate.
FFI victory - A classic, of course. Though for the purpose of a ringtone I'd prefer the tinny chiptune version.
Besaid - Pretty but a bit too subdued. If you have your ringer turned low, it might be hard to hear for the whole beginning. I had this problem when I tried using Chloe's theme from Noir as my ringtone.
Blinded by Light - Starts off rather percussive and may be hard to distinguish if you're in a noisy place. I'd rather have something with a distinctive and recognizable melody.
FFI final boss theme - if you cut out part of the intro this might work. Though I don't personally like using something designed to be so dramatic for such a mundane purpose.
Matoya's theme - This would work nicely. It's distinctive, but also not too annoying.
Spekkio's theme - also starts off somewhat percussively, making it a bit hard to detect. Other than that, this would be a LOVELY ringtone. Maybe cut out the main melody from Spekkio the Brave? Or just have an abbreviated melody-only thing as the ringtone.
Guile's Heavy Damage theme - this isn't too bad. Would sound like a standard musical ringtone to a layperson.
Turret Wife Serenade - this is probably a decent idea too.
Arise Within You - This is nice though it starts rather nondescriptly. Probably not a good choice if you want to dog-whistle your being a gamer.
Duck Tales the Moon - I actually had this as my ringtone for a short time! Unfortunately it turned out to be rather annoyingly attention-grabbing of a ringtone, starting with such high notes. It's fine to get my attention but is a bit screechy to everyone else.
Wood Man - Nice ringtone; pretty recognizable.
MM2 Wily castle 1 - Almost instantly recognizable and uses a middle-of-the-road pitch register. Would be perfect, if not for the fact that I think that the melody is pretty emotional (having heard remixes like Okkusenman and Chillout) and using it as a ringtone cheapens it.
Dragon Brothers - Another decent ringtone. Though if you're near your phone, you most likely won't get to listen to that main melody much, because you'll already have answered the phone.
Delightful Adventure - I kinda like how this theme gives a percussive intro which gives you a chance to pick up the phone before it gets any further. Not my favorite musically but it could works.
Godot's Theme - A melodic theme that works nicely as signaling too.
Steel Samurai theme - this is pretty decent too.
Ken's Heavy Damage Theme - a slightly better theme than Guile's Heavy Damage Theme in my opinion.
Sonic 3 miniboss - LOLOLOL I would love to see the expressions on EVERYONE'S faces (including the phone owner's) if this went off during a business meeting. Not good for serious situations, obviously, but...excellent for trolling or for a laugh.
Mario invincibility theme - definitely recognizable and not too annoying. Recommended again.

FWIW, my current theme tone is the crashed ship underwater theme from Metroid Prime.

Okay, now to download the podcast for listening later.

BlitzSage Ah gee, how great is the intro music!.......

There's 1 for ya....

Btw, "The moon would be jealous of you,

but it hides you in the darkness, unseen and untrue" would've been a great signature.

Narratorway Man, I remember troll Jav, but I must have missed live journal poetry Jav. Can't say I'm regretting that. smile.gif

Thanks, though, I meant to look that up and totally forgot! FRONT LOADED ANVILS.
laszlowComment 7: 2013-05-01 01:41
laszlow For awhile I kept three or four ringtones on my phone, and one of them was the first 30 seconds of this: The Big Bridge. Two of the others were the Shaolin Soccer theme and the opening riff to Thunderstruck by AC/DC. I guess I like music that climbs for my ringtone.
Death PenaltyComment 8: 2013-05-01 16:09
Death Penalty I just thought of another good potential ringtone: Man with the Machine Gun. There are a couple different sections of it that would work well.
Glenn Magus HarveyComment 9: 2013-05-14 11:48
Glenn Magus Harvey So I finally get around to listening to episode 4 when you release episode 5.

I did enjoy Tiddles's stealth poetry quite a bit.

That idea of using the orange and blue portal sounds for stuff seems like an interesting idea. Now I'm thinking of sticking it onto the minimize and restore animations in Windows.

I do also have the problem of keeping my phone on vibrate only most of the time. It saves me the trouble of having to remember to turn the ringer on and off all the time. That said, classes just ended, and I decided to turn up the volume for once, so I can enjoy my Metroid Prime ringtone. My phone's not a smartphone and I haven't figured out how to replace the alarm tone yet (though ironically that plays regardless of my ringer volume).
medzComment 10: 2013-05-16 06:34
medz I realize I'm a bit late to the party, having just listened to episode 4, but gosh, video game ringtones and notification tones. I am flabbergasted that anyone would ever think that having Navi as a text-tone would be remotely pleasant, but different strokes, I guess.

I don't have any on my current phone, because it must be eternally on vibrate due to my workplace (libraries typically frown on loud ringtones), but in the past I've had the CODEC ring from Metal Gear Solid as a ringtone, and my text-tone was the fanfare that plays whenever you get a Mini Medal in Dragon Quest VIII. I've never had the FF victory fanfare as a ringtone, and frankly it seems overdone, but all things considered, I should get something new soon. Matoya's Cave is an AWESOME idea!

Speaking more in general on the podcast, I love your length. One hour is perfect. Thank you for not being much longer or shorter than that. Also, you're filling it so nicely! A regular segment or two, followed by a set topic of discussion, suggests an aura of organization that may or may not actually exist, but the focus is greatly appreciated! It's a quality hour, regardless of how modest you guys are about said quality or your number of listeners.

That's our Jav: doing things that aren't remotely pleasant.

Thank you, it's really awesome to see that someone who isn't already permanently invested in the site thinks we're doing a good job. As a group, we don't really have that much experience in this sort of thing - in fact, I'm not sure any of us even listen to podcasts all that regularly save laszlow - but if there's one thing we like to do around CoN, it's make things look like we know a lot more about what we're doing than we actually do. flag-red.gif
