"Dragoon Tattoo" by finalalias

Wanted to make a stylized inking of a dragoon's iconic attack. Dragons seem to usually be friends of dragoons, but I figured there's gotta be some rogue ones to attack too.

Leaping from his boat in the background, he descends upon the dragon with pinpoint accuracy.

Rangers51 First off, everyone who looks at this should make sure to look at the largest version, it's a big piece. smile.gif

Looking at it from the perspective of a tattoo, which I'm forced to given the title, it's not quite optimal unless you were going to have it done as a huge piece. Some of the smaller details, particularly in Kain's armor and the dragon's legs, would probably be pretty hard to ink unless you were looking at a three-foot-long back or side piece, I think. If it were a tattoo, also, I'd lose the boat - it's too close in and distracts from the focus of the piece.

Now, thinking about it specifically as fanart, that's different. In that case, while I still think the boat is a bit distracting, it's just flat-out awesome. Love that you did it all in black and white, and the lines look amazing.

finalalias Yeah, I agree. The name was just a whim when I posted it, and I probably should have thought that through better. It definitely would need some modification in order to really become a tattoo. It's a good lesson about how much detail to allow and how to get around the absence of it when doing something like this.

Glenn Magus Harvey Whoa! Impressive black-and-white lineart!

This actually reminds me of Blackmore's shadow in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. It's got the look of a very elegantly-done LCD display. No, this is not a bad thing.
Death PenaltyComment 4: 2011-07-23 03:58
Death Penalty I think the pose looks fantastic. I'd probably have to go with Josh's thought that the boat is a bit unnecessary, but it doesn't really take away either.

Galsic Yeah, I'd lose the boat, too. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't colored in, but what does a boat have to do with a dragon-slaying scene, anyway : / ?

The rest is sharp, dramatic, simple goodness, though : ) .

finalalias Well, the idea was that he was jumping from the boat, and so wanted to I put it in to illustrate that he took a supernaturally large leap, but yeah, maybe I should not have even included the boat. At any rate, it is still too large and unbalances the picture even though I tried to scale it down.

RelmArrowney I've seen this image about a dozen times, and finally I realized what I could say! hahaha.

I think if the boat was a lighter shade of grey, so it looked in the distant, it would make more sense in the picture. Or, if it were lower in the image and drawn at an angle so we were looking down into the boat, it would give the piece an aerial feel, like Kain and the dragon were mid air.

I love this picture, though. I like simple, black lines. It's evocative and dynamic! You did a great job on everything, really-- the dragon, Kain and his armor, and the boat does look great!
