Hurray, 1,000 fanarts! :)

Not terribly happy with the face, but I mainly focused on using simple, dull/soft colors. Also, I wanted something else in the picture, hence the (very uneven ><) sword. Swords are hard to draw, fyi ><

Otherwise, I like the effect of the white, and the soft shadows :) It was a struggle to not darken it. It seems I only want to shade one type of lighting, hahaha.

Rangers51 I don't have anything in particular to say about Terra herself, though I think her ponytail looks really nice, if a bit flat against the canvas. I think the overall canvas is a bit too large for the art, though, she seems to get swallowed up pretty well in the frame.

finalalias I really love the colors and lighting on this. Very dreamy. Just for future reference, double-edged swords usually have a pommel (a knob at the end of the handle to counterbalance the blade). The blade to me doesn't look very uneven, though, except where her hand is gripping it. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but a lot of your bodies seem to have short limbs in proportion to their torso.
KameComment 3: 2011-11-30 20:22
Kame Well, everyone has pretty much mentioned the drawbacks to this piece so I'll just leave you with something else: I really like the lighting on it. It has a very soft feel which almost belies the concerned/faroff look on her face.

Narratorway I was going to say this is one the best examples of back lighting I've seen on the entire site. Really blew my mind.

RelmArrowney Hey, thanks everyone!! I love to see your comments, even criticism, haha.

Rangers, I see what you mean. Part of me liked that, actually (though I could have trimmed it up significantly still), solely because I wanted her to look very lost and alone, so it looks like she's in this huge expanse of nothing. But as mentioned in chat, I like to start my canvases big just so I have the opporunity to add on to the image to make it huger, I just finished this one after just doing Terra >< haha. I think even trimming one side, to put her a little off-center, would have fixed that easily!

Final: Now that you said that, I went back and looked at all my limbs of my characters... HAHAHA. Man, I am flawed! I didn't realize they were so short-armed. I usually work from photos as references, so that could be partially due to me not foreshortening the pictures right, or because I think hands just look better closer to the hips, so I shrink the arms. I dunno! I'm bad at art, I guess ;D Thanks for the sword info! Weaponry is not my forte at all, haha.

Kame and N-way, thanks so much!! I definitely wanted to have the lighting be soft and backlit. I think it's a very dynamic light, and suited Terra's mild nature perfectly.

Death PenaltyComment 6: 2011-12-04 15:53
Death Penalty I really like the lighting and your use of the soft colors; it's a really cool approach. I think it'd be nice, like Josh said, if the overall canvas was smaller, but that's already been said. I just hope she doesn't cut herself holding a sword like that tongue.gif
RavenLalondeComment 7: 2013-06-26 23:26
RavenLalonde I really like this. You do sometimes draw arms a bit short (a common mistake among artists) but this one in particular I thought especially well done. A tip for drawing arms, though: the tips of the fingers usually reach halfway down the thighs; and slender bodies are generally accompanied by long arms, and vice versa. Anyway, this is really well done!
