Chapter 5 |
|
"You should be the last to speak of hallucinations and inconceivable
things. You who has seen the world die and brought back to life."
Edgar placed his head in his hands, trying to calm himself. He knew
he was dreaming, but it wasn't just a dream. This had substance.
Kefka paced back and forth in front of him, and yet it was not the
Kefka he knew. The outrageous clothes still were gone, along with
the wild hair and make-up. He was clean, fresh-faced and dressed in
a simple dark blue velvet robe. Just like the last dream. Still in
his mind. Still beautiful.
Kefka turned to him. "You, who witnessed me near godliness at one
time, witnessed my demonic power. And you say you are hallucinating."
"Why are you here?" Edgar moaned.
"Because I chose to be. You need me here. I am the only one who can
make you see what needs to be seen."
"I don't understand."
"You repair your castle, you go to build others, but you don't realize
that you are not helping yourself in that way. You already threw away
one of the best things that could have happened to you."
Edgar raised dark eyes at Kefka, not saying a word.
Kefka stared back at him unafraid, those new emerald eyes feline and
soft. "I knew her once too, you know. She almost made me want to be
a good man. But I was too....messed up, I guess you could say."
Edgar shook his head. "You didn't love her. I do."
Kefka knelt next to him, looking up at the king's marble face. "Never
say that to me again. I loved her, and I wanted to take her away and
take care of her. But my evil heart wouldn't permit that. I tried
fighting it. I lost."
Edgar said nothing, but considered.
Kefka continued. "The lack of something you want so bad can turn you.
Remember that. And Terra..." Here he rose, resumed pacing. "Terra
is not your match. Yes, you love her, but not the way you think you
do. Even if you did, it is no contest. You lost her."
Edgar felt the flush in his face, and he rose out of his chair so
fast it knocked over. "You know nothing! You cannot read my thoughts!"
Kefka turned, and in his eyes was compassion, and pain. "Yes I can,
and that is why I tell you this now."
Edgar slumped against the wall, tears in his eyes. "What is happening?"
"You are thinking you are mad. I told you you are not. There is nothing
wrong with you. You are a beautiful, healthy, prosperous man. You
are loved, admired and appreciated by many. Including me."
Edgar's tears fell.
Once again Kefka's face filled with that compassion. "There is someone
who will come into your life, and walk with you on that road of happiness.
But it is not Terra. She has her match."
And with that Edgar woke up.
*******
Locke was loving it.
Why hadn't he decided to live in the mountains? Here one could see
parts of the world, and be in his/her own little world. He should
live here. He could. And he would bring Celes and...
How could he have forgotten about her?
Locke sat down on the mossy earth, head in hands. It had been weeks
since he last seen or heard from her, and he hadn't bother to write
or do anything. She probably thought
he was dead. Why did he let his anger get a hold of him? Damn him.
The adventure was lost. He had to return to her.
*******
Gau sat among the battlements of Doma Castle, relishing the cool evening
air that glided over his face. He was alone, finally, with nothing
to worry about now except him. Gau. And Gau was lost, and lonely,
and terribly unsure of the future.
He didn't know what to do with his father. He wanted to save him...but
how? There was no real cure for insanity. Would his father end up
like Kefka? Crazy, sick, unaware of the beauty around him.
Gau wiped away a tear. No, it couldn't be that way. He wouldn't let
it. He was strong. He had lived with the animals. He had killed monsters.
He had went to strange places and came out alive. He was strong.
Yet he felt so weak.
*******
"Sabin, I don't understand. No, I can't believe..."
Cyan stared across the table at Sabin, his dark eyes worried. H had
hardly ever seen the man troubled, and Sabin had been upset. Sabin
had been pacing all day. Sabin who hadn't eaten.
"My brother is ill. Or sad. Or angry. Either way, he is not himself."
"Cyan raised an eyebrow. "What makes thou say these things? Is Edgar
acting unlike himself?"
Sabin sighed. "He is troubled. He's scared. He sleeps alone at night
now."
Cyan was thoughtful for a moment. "Perhaps...he is just worried about
the resurrection of the ancient castle."
Sabin laughed bitterly. "Edgar never worries about stuff like that.
He's too confidant in his workers."
"Then maybe he is ill, or he is tired. Stress?"
"Maybe." Sabin sighed. "I do intend to find out."
*******
Katarin smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry, Gogo, but Terra isn't here."
Gogo gripped the letter tighter. Now what? It would had been all right-giving
her the letter and vanishing out of sight. But she wasn't here, and
would he be so brave next time? So willing to let her know everything?
He gave the letter to Katarin, and simply left, perhaps for good.
