Chapter 1 |

"You know, I wonder about you." Celes glanced at her friend, a small
frown on her face.
"Why?" Terra's eyes were questioning.
"You seem sad."
Terra looked out the window. "I'm lonely, but not sad." Would lonely
be sad? She had the children, but she had no one to herself. She smiled
at the sight of children playing outside in the streets. "I hope Dwayne
and Katarin are okay with handling all those kids."
Celes smiled. "They have Mog and Umaro to help them. You're changing
the subject."
Terra sighed. "I don't want to talk about it."
Celes shrugged. "There are good guys out there. Get over Edgar."
Terra chuckled. "I am," she reassured. Her heart though could not
laugh. She was incredibly lonely, and none of it had to do with Edgar.
She was way over the king. But she still longed for someone to love
her and understand her. The way loved ones did. Someone gentle and
thoughtful, attentive and serious.
"Well, I wish Edgar would take a break," Celes said, getting up to
make tea. "He works too damn hard. Locke too."
"And Sabin, Mog, Strago
" Terra continued, laughing.
Celes joined in. "I can't wait until tonight. The grand Figaro ball!
Oh Terra, we will have so much fun tonight! What are you wearing?"
"It's a lovely thing-long, with glittery beads and ribbons. Relm made
it for me."
"Is it red?" Celes asked with a smirk.
"No, it's dark green. Ha ha!" Terra stuck her tongue out at her friend.
"Well, you'll look lovely, nevertheless. Let's get ready!"
*********
Locke grimaced. "How do you tie one of these things?" he asked, fumbling
with the strand of black silk in his hands.
Sabin frowned, taking the silk from Locke. "Maybe if you do it like
this
"
Strago shook his head. "It's supposed to be a bow tie, not a piece
of rope." He took the tie from Sabin. "You have to make a loop
"
Edgar laughed, wiping tears from his eyes. Monsters they could kill
and towns they could fix, but none could manage to properly tie a
simple bow tie. "We are pathetic, at least you all are, " he snickered.
"I like to see you try this, brother!" yelled Sabin.
"Thou have enough finery on you, King. Thou need any more?" Cyan walked
in, taking the silk from Strago. "This ball is more of a reunion than
a fashion contest."
"No need for fashion contest, King." Edgar smiled at Cyan's title.
"We all know who would win!"
"Thou, nevertheless, look fine enough without this."
Locke, Sabin, and Strago stared in shock as Cyan handed a finely tied
bow tie to Figaro's king.
"Thank you, Cyan! Where are the others?" Edgar went to admire
himself in one of the many mirrors that adorned his room.
"Celes should arrive with Terra any minute. Relm is getting ready.
Gau is in the kitchens, "testing" the food," informed Locke.
"That's Gau!" Sabin beamed proudly.
Locke chuckled and continued. "Setzer, no doubt, will make his own
grand entrance. Mog and Umaro are on the balcony, waiting for Gogo."
Strago was startled. "Gogo decided to come?"
Locke smiled. "Weird, huh?" But it was a comforting thought. Maybe
he would find out a little bit about the vague mimic.
"Who knows, perhaps our Shadow will pop in," Edgar replied smoothly,
exiting the room and proceeding to the ballroom. He was excited about
the ball, for it had been awhile since the whole group of them had
last been together. It would be nice if Shadow dropped by. He was
an ominous, mysterious man, but trustworthy. Edgar smiled. He considered
Shadow trustworthy. That was like considering Locke to be serious
or Cyan improper.
Well, either way, it was going to be a splendid night, he would make
sure of that. He spent many a pretty penny on the preparations. There
would be dancing and food and fireworks. And ladies. Lots of lovely
ladies.
"Edgar!"
He turned, looking for the source of the voice, and smiled to see
Celes and Terra dismounting off of chocobos.
"Where have you two been all my life?" he joked, taking them both
by the hand.
"Running from you," Celes smiled teasingly.
Edgar turned his nose up at her. "I don't need you, I have this beautiful
creature right here! Dance with me, Terra!" he cried, sweeping the
girl around the corridor in a popular ballroom dance.
She laughed. Edgar was too much. He was definitely a wonderful friend.
Celes turned to find Locke smiling at her behind the king. She ran
into his arms, kissing him warmly. It had been three weeks since she
last saw him, and she missed him terribly.
Locke smiled down at her. "Well hello," he murmured huskily, giving
her an amusing dirty look. "I like the dress."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, I'd like to take it off of you," he continued in that same
voice, with an evil grin.
She slapped him playfully, but in her limbs she longed to be alone
with Locke.
"Sabin!!!" Terra yelled, jumping into the giant's arms.
Edgar pretended to look insulted. "Hey, I was dancing with the lady!"
Sabin smiled. "Perhaps you're losing your charm," he teased.
"Never," Edgar said firmly.
Relm and Gau came running in then, followed by the others. There was
much talking and hugging, even the newly arrived Gogo was embracing
the kids. Locke smiled. It had been a while. He wished Setzer and
Shadow would come. He HOPED Shadow would come.
Edgar's ushering everyone into the ballroom interrupted his thoughts. |
