Star Ocean Producer Finished with Star Ocean

Yoshinori Yamagishi is a 20-year veteran of Enix and Square-Enix and a major collaborator with the development studio Tri-Ace - Yamagishi has been a producer on every Tri-Ace game since the first Star Ocean. It's safe to say that he is one of the major architects of the Star Ocean series, although he is not one of the three "ace" designers that inspired the company's name upon its founding. And as soon as the PS3 director's cut or "International" version of Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope is released, Mr. Yamagishi is going to distance himself from the series.

Star Ocean was originally conceived as a trilogy of games. Star Ocean: The Last Hope represented a new, different direction for the series. After the release of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time for the PS2, Tri-Ace began to branch out and create games not named Star Ocean or Valkyrie Profile, with the development of Radiata Stories and Infinite Undiscovery in 2005 and 2008, respectively. Tri-Ace is also currently working on an RPG called Resonance of Fate. According to his recent interview with a Japanese gaming site, Mr. Yamagishi wants to work on new Tri-Ace intellectual property like those three instead of more Star Ocean sequels.

RelmArrowney I'm sad to see no more Star Oceans, but if his brilliance is imparted in these games, anything sculpted by his hands will be a delight. When you work on something with such a big name, it's important to know when to quit. I'm honestly more grateful he quit now, on such a fantastic note, than milking the series and making extraneous games that even the most obsessed player won't finish...

fleetingsight I totally agree with RelmArrowney on this one.

As someone who loves to create things, it's hard to choose between expanding the timelines/worlds which have been established (like the Star Ocean series), or going off and taking that plunge into the creation of a brand new one.

Expanding on something has many advantages, as any fanfic writer will tell you, since you're sure to find people interested in your work who already know a lot of the background, and you can put old things in a new light, and make people go "huh, I never thought of it like that before", or "it's cool to see that it happened like that!", or "you know, I've always wondered about that".

On the other hand, there's so many things one must be careful of, as any good fanfic writer will tell you. I don't think I'll go into all the things one must avoid 'cause people have already written so much about it, but suffice it to say, there's the weighty risk of ruining it for people, and especially for one's self, if one cares enough about a series. And at the commercial level, the dangers only become harder to avoid.

But a fresh, new start comes without all those advantages+disadvantages. It can be intimidating, but many times, it's a very healthy thing to do. Of course, some people stick with one world most of their life, with beautiful consequences (e.g. J.R.R. Tolkien), so it's different for everybody. So yeah, it's a hard decision, but I think he did the right thing for himself and the fans.
