Square Enix' E3 2010 Game News

As noted with our coverage of Nintendo's conference yesterday, there's about to be a pretty significant influx of games from Square Enix to the big N. Of course Dragon Quest IX is on the way to the DS already, as well as Kingdom Hearts Re:coded and The 4 Heroes of Light. Not only that, Nintendo announced yesterday that Squenix would be working on titles in no fewer than four franchises for the new 3DS: Chocobo Racing, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy. Kingdom Hearts is already being shown at E3 in the Squenix booth, but not much news coming from it as yet beyond that it is an all-new title, not just an old game remastered for 3D.

What else could come up at E3 from SE? Well, now we know a bit more. The company has announced two ports to Apple devices: a port of War of the Lions, the PSP remake of Final Fantasy Tactics, and also a port of the SNES classic Secret of Mana. There's not much more to know about these two games right now - both videos are nothing more than trailers superimposed onto an iPhone screen, and the only date given is "2010." There's a trailer for The 3rd Birthday as well, the successor to the Parasite Eve games of the PlayStation, in which Aya appears to pick up the ability to take over the bodies of some NPCs as she fights in an over-the-shoulder shooter fashion. That game will be on PSP in Japan later this year.

Something I had yet to see anything about is another 2010 release, "Necromachina," coming for the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network as a downloadable title. It looks to be a four-player co-op sidescrolling brawler, and if the trailer is a good representation of the overall game, it looks to be pretty hyperactive as well.

Finally, if you haven't seen the trailer for Final Fantasy XIV yet, or even if you have, you owe it to yourself to check out the source link below for the high-definition version. It looks absolutely gorgeous, and there's a nice big chunk of classic Crystal theme in there too. Of course, these aren't all the games that the giant Square Enix now have their hands in, but they're the most relevant. Check out their E3 site below for more, and we'll keep you updated if they sneak any surprises or further information out the rest of E3.

I cannot even begin to imagine how awful a TOUCH-SCREEN version of Secret of Mana will be, especially on a tiny screen like the iPhone. It could work on the iPad, but that's such a needless device to begin with that this seems like a completely worthless port. Surely a port to the [3]DS would make more sense, especially with the potential to utilize the bottom screen for the ring system. Stupid.

I have to agree with Neal on this one, I was talking about this on another chatroom with some people, I can see turn base games like Final Fantasy 1, 2, and tactics being on the system. But not an action base game. Let's just see what they do for the menus and such. But I doubt this is going to be a good outing for it.

It's weird to think DX is Square Enix now. I enjoyed the E3 trailer a lot. At the same time I can't help thinking that all the original game needed in a FMV or cutscene was two people watching TV in a room. Can't expect too much from this game I suppose.

I'm impressed with the story direction Deus Ex: Human Revolution is taking. There seems to be a great deal of Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner influence, nothing wrong with that. The big question is whether the gameplay and narrative matches up to it. As far as I know they want it to be a lot more action-based, but I'll be disappointed if it's too close to either Gears of War or Splinter Cell, because that's just boring. I've given up hope that it'll have the same Morrowind style of walking around and potentially fighting at any given moment.

What I'm most impressed with, however, is the music and the voice acting. He sounds like Walton Simons, so I think maybe this Jensen guy is Walton Simons, but who knows. The music is being composed by one man throughout, and from the trailer I think he has the right idea.

At the same time, it just seems too stupid to be really good. It might be fun, but I'd be really amazed if it turns out to be an engaging and wonderfully constructed story. I mean, he basically says things that are happening on screen, that's badly provided exposition even for a trailer. And, as one YouTube commentator rightfully said, how can 'Riots Continue' be breaking news?

That would make Walton Simons one old dude by the time Deus Ex rolls around. Also, if he is WS, how'd he get his arms back? I've been hearing a lot of theories like that lately. Personally, I think Adam is just some guy. I don't think he's secretly some other character that's already been established, yeah?

Well we don't know much about WS in DX1. He would only be about 70 or 80 in DX1, perfectly reasonable to extend life with the artificial hearts and lungs and so on, he has his arms covered and the bits we see (hands) look heavily modified, and he has the same brilliant voice. It's not impossible, but you're right it's very unlikely.
