So MMORPGs Are Good for Something After All...

While the title of this news post is a joke, its contents is not. One would have to be living in a 1950s fallout shelter to not have heard of the horrific tsunamis that have devastated much of southern Asia after a 9.0 earthquake on December 26th. The death toll is reaching 150,000 and continuing to rise.

There has been a great human response to the disaster and gamers from Ultima Online and EVE Online are trying to do their part to help.

Ever laugh over someone selling a virtual item for selling a virtual item from real money (and even harder at the person who actually bought it)? Many UO players are selling their in-game items in order to raise funds for donations. EVE Online, on the other hand, has set up a section in each player's account where donations may be made.

------------------

If you would like to make a donation, you can do so to the Red Cross through Amazon.com . Every little bit helps.

Hamedo Don't tell Ultimecia about this..... He'll donate grain.

Seriously, I'm amazed at the outpouring of aid being given to the affected regions. Movie stars.... the governments of the world.... it seems everyone is willing to pitch in.

One thing that saddens me, though, is that if all this effort could be put towards something like ending world hunger.... something that didn't require a disaster to get the ball rolling..... then how much could we as a global community accomplish? thumbup.gif Friggin' aye.

MogMaster Lol Hammy.

It really is amazing the way people all pulled together in a time of tradgedy like this. Sandra Bullock announced she was donating 1million by her lonesome. Its a shame something like a tsunami had to occur to unite all these people. If we weren't all dirt poor I'd say we should start a CoN tsunami relief fund. tongue.gif

sharkerbob Nothing unites people like a common enemy or a huge disaster. Sad, but true, we as a species need something to fight against or challenge, and if nothing is around to oppose or overcome, we bicker amongst ourselves until something like this happens. Nonetheless, it is heartwarming to see the sheer amount of help going to this effort; its more than I would have thought would have happened.

Hamedo Just imagine, though..... All the money being given by groupd here and there all over the United States, all the money the government itself is giving, all the monbey that the wealthy are giving, and all the personal contributions from poor shmucks like us that is being given..... If we could rally behind something just here in our own country and put those kind of resources behind it, we could accomplish anything. Think of the overhaul we could give to our education system. Hell, think of the kids we could put through college! The housing that could be built for the homeless.... the food would be overrunning in the soup kitchens for the poor.... every kid would have some kind of Christmas present to open.... no one would ever have to be cold in the winter, choosing food over electricity.... I love how we come together when the chips are down, but it would be so lovely to see it happen not out of necessity, but out of a true willingness to improve others situations.

Jeez, I talk too much.

It's not bad if it has a message wink.gif

Yeah, tis sad it takes something like this to unite everyone, but I guess it's working. I too would donate some money, but don't have anything I could use;same goes for some other ppl I know (some have money to spare however >_>)
The virtual items idea sounds like a good plan, but I'm not sure how much money it could make. I mean who would buy from someone who they can't even see face-to-face?

Nobody. That's why eBay failed within the first month it came into being and closed down. wink.gif

I bought my car on ebay.

I think its awsome how much people are giving, but to point out Sandra Bullock giving 1 million is a joke, she could definetly afford more, yet she chooses not to.

Well, yes, but there are also hundreds of other Hollywood stars who could give a million bucks as well and many more that could afford more, but choose to give nothing at all. All in all $1 mil is alot for a single person to give.
RacthohComment 9: 2005-01-07 05:27
Racthoh Thing is, she didn't have to donate $1 million and she did. A million is far more than any of us average joes here on CoN can probably donate (at least I think so anyway). I feel really selfish not doing anything cause I need every penny to stay in college, whereas over 150,000 people have perished, some of which are children who won't even have the opportunities that I get to have in school. It's just so tragic to think about, and during the holidays... ugh.
DivineKnightComment 10: 2005-04-12 16:11
DivineKnight This is kinda old but meh, what the heck. I think the only reason our governments are donating is to not appear selfish (even though we all know they are) just my opinion though..
