PBS to Air Video Game Music Concert

Between CoNnews and Square Enix email notifications, I've been hearing a lot about the upcoming cycle of Distant Worlds concerts, and it's fairly likely you have too. For those of us that don't live in Los Angeles (is it just me or does Distant Worlds really like LA?) or any other included city, however, there will still be a chance for you to enjoy a fully-orchestrated version of your favorite videogame soundtracks, complete with flashy lights.

Later this week/month, PBS will be hosting a concert called Video Games Live, which will feature music from several different videogames. The concert is performed by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, a chorus and a rock band, as well as some other soloists I've never heard of. A video preview can be found on the IGN link below. The part with the head banging cello player is enough to get me to tune in, even if it is a little discomforting.

Some of the games included in the concert are:
Final Fantasy
Chrono Cross
Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros.
World of Warcraft
Halo
And a "Classic Arcade Medley." That can be nothing if not a good time, right?

In order to see when the concert will be aired in your area, you'll need to go to the PBS site linked below and type in your zip code and then search for "video games live." If you really enjoy the concert, it appears that there will be a DVD/Blu-ray release of the entire program complete with the ever-tempting lure of bonus materials.

Kirchewasser Video Games Live is awesome! I saw one back in 2006, when it first came to my country. To bad is that some companies didn't let the show to use their games screens, like Final Fantasy.

That would be strange if they don't again. In the preview they played One Winged Angel. This ought to be cool. Obviously I love video games, but I also love classical music.

FallingHeart VGL has only ever once come to my state, when I was out of town, but I've always been dying to see it once. Largely because Tommy Tallarico is awesome.

Last I heard Kirchewasser was right and VGL doesn't use any footage from square games, which is a shame because the concerts themselves are pretty heavy on their music. I think it directly has to do with the fact that Square hosts their own concert series and is stingy about licencing out use of their game footage to competition.

Actually, I didn't see any FF game footage when they were playing One Winged Angel; the screens were just panning the stage.

I guess I can see why squenix won't allow their footage to be used, seeing as they have their own Distant Worlds concerts. But, it's still kinda of jerk move. Especially if they don't allow footage for any FF as well as CC. thumbdown.gif

Glenn Magus Harvey I think Squenix has been the most, and possibly the only, videogame company to really restrict use of their music.
