Front Mission Series Ported to Cellphones

Front Mission Mobile joined Square Enix's line of cellphone games for the Japanese NTT Docomo service on March 7. Front Mission is the third major Square Enix console series to be ported to Docomo's cellphone platform, following last year's releases of Dragon Quest i and Final Fantasy titles.

Much like Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis, the new Front Mission game has been designed such that Square Enix may periodically release future installments of the game, which are to be downloaded from their website with compatible phones. Access to the game and its new installments requires a monthly premium of about US $5, added directly to the user's phone bill.

Silverlance Best series ever. It's a shame that Square didn't try to further it like they did with FF. It's also a shame they'd continue the series this way. :/

Why the monthly fee? I understand why it would be necessary to pay to get new installments (though that is kind of cheap depending on what this means; if it's a new "game" altogether then it's a good deal, but if it's just a new fight every once in a while, that sucks.) but why pay to play the game itself? Is it going to be online only?

Something tells me Square may make a more important move towards pay-to-play gaming soon. Sad, though financially beneficial to the company as a whole given the blind fanboy-ish attitude the majority of their target audience has. People will keep on paying even if it means they'll have to keep paying on a regular basis to enjoy Square's games...

Why in my days, games didn't have servers that eventually went down once the game dropped in popularity. You could still play old classics like Final Fantasy I even today. (Insert mumbling and cane-brandishing.)
