Capcom Loses, Games Shelved

Capcom, one of the top video game developers, suffered 19.5 billion yen ($163 million) in losses in 2002.  This happened because many of their games which they expected to be big sellers fell short of what they expected.  For example, three of their main sellers combined to sell 760,000 less copies than they expected.  This accounts for much of the loss, which was explained by the president, that the market was moving in a different direction than their titles.  Capcom's loss caused them to shelve 18 of their games that were in development, which is a huge hit to the company.

It's interesting to think about other reasons why things fell so flat for the company in 2002.  The American economy, at least, was suffering for much of the year, but it seems to easy to blame it on that when there are many markets around the world that are buying the games.  It would also be nice to know if any other companies had losses to their sales to see if the video game market is in a slump right now.  I think market confidence needs to be up before people will start buying more.  I can safely say that I only got two video games last year, Wild ARMs 3 and Suikoden 3, and neither of those are Capcom titles.  If Capcom wants to get back into the market, they'll probably need to start developing different types of games, and maybe that's the aim in the cancellation of so many games.  What does everyone else think?

Del S all i have to say to capcom is.. you shouldnt have move RE to GameCube. Whilst this was not the main reason, of course, the Resident Evil series was probably one of the games they made the most out of from PS2, and they would make a great deal of money on XBOX sales too. I know that the remake of Resi on GC was successful, but was it as sucessful as Resi 4 would have been on PS2, XBOX and CG combined? hopefully these losses may force capcom to put Resi back on all 3- PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube versions of Resi would help get capcom out of the red.
PS-Devil May Cry was suppsoed to eb the repalcementfor resi on PS2.. i didnt buy it, did anyone else?

Zephir Capcom trimming the fat on their titles may be a wise move, as they are probably researching the market at the moment and trying to figure out which games may sell more for them.  I wouldn't discount that the market is in a slump right now, as it probably is, what with the war and all.

Elena1999 I always remember Capcom in the old gaming days as being one of the best and one of my favorite 3rd party developers. Now that I think back on the games I own for ps and ps2 I don't think any of them are made by Capcom. However, I did just buy Super Puzzle Fighter for GBA. That game was made by Capcom. That game ownz.

tenshi/akuma I generally love Capcom games (except for the fact that their games are notorious for being horrendously translated).  I honestly think they make the best fighting games (let's forget about Marvel Super Heroes, shall we?), and I always recoil in horror when I see an American fighting game (*cough*Tao Feng!*cough*).  

I own....  5? games:  Capcom vs. SNK Pro, Darkstalkers 3, and Pocket Fighter for PSOne, and RE 2 and 3 for computer.

Yeah, me too, especially way back in the NES and SNES days when the Megaman games were danged good (after Megaman X 2, I lost track of them...they moved to the PSX and I didnt see anything special in them.  And some of the later MM games were just wierd or just sucked.  Tis a shame, but the Mario series did the same thing...).  And Street Fighter II still gets a lot of playtimes by me and my friends (classics will never die... :D ).  It seems Capcom's glory days are gone, at least for now.  Even Street Fighter and RE are pretty worn out now.   :(
