BioWare and Sega team up for a Sonic RPG on the DS

Nintendo DS
Yes, you read that headline correctly. BioWare, the role-playing game ace developer behind Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is making an RPG for the Nintendo DS starring Sonic the Hedgehog.

In a recent press release, BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka was optimistic: "as huge fans of Sonic ourselves, we're committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character's broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure."

This untitled Sonic RPG is scheduled for an unspecified 2008 release, and also marks BioWare's first game on a Nintendo console (other than MDK2, all of BioWare's games are for either Microsoft systems or personal computers). Currently, BioWare is working on two much-hyped RPGs, Dragon Age and Mass Effect, for the PC and XBox 360 respectively. This BioWare/Sega/Nintendo partnership might seem strange, but those three companies have one hell of a track record, so it could turn out to be something special.

Galsic ...well, it worked with Square and Mario, I guess. BioWare developed my favorite game series (Baldur's Gate wub.gif ) so I'll REALLY be interested in what they do with Sonic.

Anaesthesia Well, that Xbox 360 game had scenery that was practically cribbed from a Final Fantasy...

It would be interesting to see if and how Bioware would incorporate the speed aspect into something as typically slow and strategy-based as an RPG-- at least the "Run Away" option would be effective. tongue.gif

I'm wondering how the story would work out, too, given SEGA's near-constant flow of new characters, confusing canonical splits and apparently less than stellar storytelling (if those cut-scenes and the overblown Sonic X are any indication). A part of me secretly hopes it might be based on that old SatAM cartoon, pipe dream though it may be-- how cool would it be to have the Freedom Fighters in a party up against robots and a surprisingly dark Robotnik?

Malag N I don't care what I have to do, I am getting this game. As a huge Sonic fan and an RPG fan... this is a dream come true... I have only heard good things about Bioware, so this should be good. I'm super excited.
MogMasterComment 5: 2007-06-23 06:06
MogMaster Bioware has a pretty good track record, and they definitely took the overdone "Star Wars Video Game" and brought it to the next level with KOTOR. (Possibly one of the best series ever.) I wouldn't be surprised if this game turns out excellent.

The Modern Aged Hm, maybe BioWare is the right company for preventing the Sonic ship from sinking.

Why did you bump an old topic with something completely unworthy of bumping the topic with, compiled on to that that it's complete fabrication anyways

Why is it your job to call him out on it? -R51

laszlow There has been a huge new amount of information released about this game as of late, and it's too much effort to write it all down. Just read the Wikipedia article on the subject.

But it sounds pretty cool. Ouendan-style spellcasting? Team-based attacks? Darker interpretation of the Sonic universe? This could turn out to be a very good game.

Now, I hate to revive a discussion that probably doesn't need to continue, but I can't really agree with either of those statements. First of all, even though Sonic has had some horrendous games as of late (take a look at the recent PS3 and XBox 360 Sonic titles), his built-in fanbase is too strong to dislodge the franchise. There's no danger of "the Sonic ship" capsizing at all, really.

But I can't really agree with what Danny said either. That kind of statement isn't a complete fabrication. I mean, in the past fifteen years or so, Sonic has had maybe two or three good games. To paraphrase another post from several months ago, the Sonic games have always had rather subpar storytelling and way too many unnecessary colorful-cartoon-animal characters with trite personalities.

Truthfully, I've never been a fan of Sonic, as I was a Nintendo kid for the first half of the 90s, but I still think that this BioWare RPG has great promise - if BioWare's interpretation of the Sonic universe can be a quality as BioWare's interpretation of the Star Wars universe, Square's interpretation of the Mario universe, or even David Jaffe's interpretation of Greek myth, then this game will be something special. We'll see how this game turns out, and who knows? Maybe it will be the first Sonic game I ever purchase.

painreaver I still play the crap out of Sonic 2 and the Sonic and Knuckles lock-on and I still regard it as one of the most fun platform games ever. I also am a huge fan of Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights (own both) so I hope it works out
