This isn't a price-cut because the existing products remain at the same price. We had a price cut earlier this year when the 80 GB model was introduced and the 60 GB model lowered in price (for the remainder of its life). It's also worth noting that the 40 GB model doesn't support backwards compatibility and only has 2 USB slots instead of 4. If I recall correctly, it also lacks the memory card readers.

So they are offering the 80 gig machine, but at the old 40 gig price? And the 40 gig is not even an option in the US? Do I have that right?

They are offering the 80 gig machine at the 60-gig price, and the 40 gig machine will be available in the US on November 2nd at a price point of $399 US.

my technological idiocy has kicked in again. so basically, spending the extra 100 bucks is the better choice, since the cheaper version has fewer gigs and no backwards compatability. what would the USBs be used for? is that how controllers are being handled now?

I'm not sure what the PS3 lineup looks like this holiday season, but it had better be good, or this price reduction will be like the umbrella Wile E. Coyote puts up before getting flattened by the pile of rocks.

Actually, as it happens, there is a price cut. Here in the UK anyway. But it has been long overdue. It's finally gone down from it's £425 to a slightly more comfortable £350. And if you look hard, you can find some good deals with it. The 40GB version has also been released here and it costs £299. But it has NO backwards compatibility and only two USB ports instead of the standard four. Personally I will steer clear of this version. I'm not sure if it's the same situation for the US one that is to be released. I'm guessing this is the last cut before Christmas, so will probably get one soon. But really I'm still waiting for many of the games that are due out in November here. No doubt you in the US already have most of them. Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is one that has caught my eye.

The best I've seen is two games and two blu-ray films for £350. Very tempting. I still think the games that are out on the PS3 and 360 are not worth it. I wouldn't buy either yet; even if one dropped in price again.

ok, i have questions, based on the 40GB vs the 80GB first of all, what are the USB's used for? secondly, what is the difference between 80 GB and 40 GB? i mean, obviously 40 GB, but im asking how much of that space you use, and for what. thanks.

Well the way you recharge the PS3 controller is via a USB cable for a start. The ports can also be used for things like Eye toys, keyboards, a mouse, linking PS3s together, linking to a PSP, and any other gadgets they happen to think up, which I'm guessing will be a few. I don't know if they have a keyboard or a mouse out for the PS3 yet, if not hopefully they will soon for the strategy games I'm also hoping to see. The larger GB hard drives are needed for downloading the vast amount of movies and more importantly games. I'm told if you download War Hawk straight to the PS3 it's about half the price you pay in the shops.

The latest drop has put the 80 GB PS3 at $499 Canadian, as well. Coincidentally, it has also put the few remaining 60 GB models (as of yesterday, my store had two) at $449. That's a pretty significant drop in price ($100 on the 60, $160 on the 80); enough that I've considered getting a PS3 while we still have a 60 for me to grab. Unfortunately, consider is all I can do.

In europe the 40gb ps3 has been out for like a year, its the only option us sad Britishers have after sony discontinued the 60gb a month after its release here. Luckily i got one before it was discontinued:D
