FFV for iOS Price Leaked, Everyone Complains

Final Fantasy V
Following up on some news we posted back in December, FFV has been confirmed for release on iOS devices on March 28th. We don't know yet which other Final Fantasies will be joining it, but with this latest addition to the Square Enix iOS lineup ready to hit the shelves - the electronic ones, that is - we'll probably be hearing more sometime in the not-so-distant future. This version is a port of FFV Advance, which means it will be completely covered by our own shiny, revamped FFV section!

The bigger news according to internet consensus is the Japanese price, leaked from a magazine scan: the equivalent of $19. Everyone with a keyboard and upwards of three brain cells seems to have decried the cost in the last 48 hours. What do you think? Is $19 unfair to ask for a game that is, after all, just a port of a previous version, and whose original is now twenty years old? Or is it appropriate for a game that will take 40-ish hours to complete, well above your average mobile app, and which still sells on the GBA for at least 50% higher? IF U DONT AGREE WITH ME, YOUR DUM.

Kame I mean, I get the sentiment of people. It's hard to shell out $19 when everyone and their mom is selling games for $.99 to $2.99 (think Angry Birds). But to me, it's apples to oranges. Angry Birds doesn't have the level of game immersiveness that any FF (yes, even FFMQ) have. Many people haven't played FFV yet. I was perfectly willing to shell out money for remake titles on the DS for "old" Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games even though I played them all years ago on my NES. I'm not an iPhone user and my iPod is the old skool variety but I'd give FFV a chance for the price they're asking.

Yeah, that's where I'm coming from. I've only bought one game for iOS from Squenix, and that is Tactics, but I was happy to fork over that money for a game of that quality for a device I am likely to have around all the time (in this case, an iPad whenever nobody else in my family is using it, which is still better than the single-purpose PSP).

I don't have that many games for my iOS devices, but the ones I have range from free all the way up to about $20, with more at the lower end of the spectrum than high. I have yet to buy a game that is more than $10 that I didn't know would be worth the money going in, and while I can see that some people aren't sure they can make that claim about a Squenix game, expecting them to lower their pricing standards instead of making the indie devs raise theirs is going to be bad for the industry going forward.
TheEvilEyeComment 3: 2013-03-21 18:34
TheEvilEye I'm not averse to paying $19 for a game I know is good. But Would I buy FFV for $19? No. Would I buy FFIV or FFVI for $19? Absolutely. I don't use iOS products though, and I'm holding out a little hope that they will push these products out for Android soon. I know Android seems to have a bit more piracy issues and of course so many different phones and tablets to work through but they seemed to have "solved" it with the FFI release, which I did pay $7 for. I played it once, it was actually a pretty quick playthrough, but I have no regrets. I am casting my vote overall in the lot that *would* pay $20 for a quality game with 40+ hours to get through. But because it's FFV....ehhh.

On that note, lets see more timely Android releases please! Even though I can emulate it, own it on the SNES, and have it on my Wii VC, My $19 is still waiting for your Final Fantasy IV Android release because I would love to play it at work or on the go.

Glenn Magus Harvey I'm just the opposite regarding FFIV and FFV (as I like FFV more and feel FFIV is a bit meh, and has been overdone by now anyway), but I do have to ask myself whether I'd be willing to pay $19 even for a game I know is good.

The last time I paid that amount for a game -- excepting once when I bought Recettear as a quick gift for a friend -- was probably around six years ago when I bought a used copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for $25.

Then again I'm also influenced by the fact that I have a huge backlog. If we were talking about buying gifts for friends the situation might be a bit different. Though for about twenty bucks I would also kinda prefer to have a physical copy.

I play a lot of RPGs through my phone now. So I probably will pay the money for Final Fantasy V. Just not right away. I'm more excited by the fact that FFVI is next in line for an iOS release. Now I'd pay good money to get that on my phone!

ILoveMoombas! $19 seems like a fair price for FFV, it's certainly less than what I paid for the GBA version.
I don't have any iOS devices so I'm a bit detached from the price expectations though.

YUP.

This is one of my favourite FF's and I'm pretty psyched for this to come out. I won't jump on it right away, but $19 is pretty legitimate for me to pay to have this portable.

His Shadow This was posted on my iPhone.

Here are my issues on why I wouldn't support this port.

Square Enix has failed to patch or optimize for iOS updates or the iPhone 5
There are no real updates to justify purchasing this version!
- Are they updating the graphics or music or will this be a lazy port like they did for FFA & FFC?
Well Final Fantasy IV (DS) you can argue was deserving of the iOS release and price this is a very old game with no real new updates!

As fans we want to buy this game even if we don't play it. I think this is what Square Enix is hoping for, sadly. What should be done is the quality of the game should be improved. Sadly we've been playing the same game.... Over and over again!

As customers we are getting screwed time and time again. After Final Fantasy All The Bravest I hope people stopped supporting Square with anything they throw out because that game tells you how they feel about us.

I think you do raise an interesting question.

Who is the target audience of this port? Is SE hoping to reach a new audience via a new device at a new time? If so, I think most of your points aren't nearly as strong. At the same time, however, I think we would have to question the game's viability in the year 2013.

On the other hand, is SE hoping to snag old fans into replaying a title they've already visited, perhaps two years ago, or perhaps ten? If so, I think your points are all very potent. To someone that has already paid and played this game, a direct port is a bit of a dead fish.
DjibrielComment 11: 2013-04-07 12:31
Djibriel I purchased and played the new FFV for the iOS platform this morning, so Imma tell you my thoughts on it. But first:

I see two reasons to oppose ports like this.

One, I hear people complaining that the old games should be 'left alone' as if they were genuine old-timers that were being bothered by noisy kids. This is like saying a movie ruined the book for you. I never understood this..

Two, it's a sign of 'easy money' and a certain intellectual poverty. Now, SE is a business out to make profit, and if they can put little effort into a game and still make a good profit on it, it just goes to show there's a market for it and everybody's happy. Good work SE as far as I'm concerned. There's the larger picture, where energy put into rereleasing old games is energy not directed and creating new games and stories. That's the best point I can think of.

The port itself is good fun. It's basically the GBA game with a new skin and at least one GBA-exclusive bug (partly? it's the Vampire one) fixed.

Good points:
In-battle, all sprites look much better than the original ones. This goes for monsters, bosses but most importantly the characters. Certain Job classes on certain characters looked just hideous (mostly on Krile's giant head). What I've seen so far is beautiful.
There's an auto-battle system where you can give each character one command (say, multi-target Aero) and the character will automatically do that thing continuously. Also, when auto-battle is active for the party, spell animations and such run at 150% speed or so, allowing you to breeze through random encounters faster than ever before. Auto-battle is turned off automatically when you encounter a boss, so there's no danger there.

The same:
Music's the same.
Battle mechanics' seems to be the same so far; GBA-exclusive content is available. I can't say just how many bugs available in all versions so far have been fixed in this new release.
No new content I'm aware of.
Translation largely the same as the GBA translation, but not entirely. This means that CoN's walkthrough so far seems applicable to the iOS game no problem.

Bad points:
Out-battle, the sprites look somewhat stiff and generic, like the whole thing had been creatd in RPG Maker 1998.
It's a good-looking modern skin on the same old game. Cutscenes play out exactly like they used to on the Super Famicom and no additional sprite poses have been implemented. This makes for an odd-looking 'wedding' of the old game and the new. No way an original game released today would ever play out cutscenes like this. It would have been better had the cutscenes been rebuilt with more character animations.
On the touchpad, you cannot only move in four directions; you are free to wander all over the place. As far as the PCs are concerned, there is no more square grid to move on. For cutscenes and NPCs though, this is still the case. Also, there are no diagonal sprites, so you're strafing all the time. Finally, I often 'overshoot' my goal with what can be imprecise movement. I found avoiding the poisonous plants on North mountain almost impossible, for instance. I feel the four-direction confinement was better.

Not to direct attention away from the rest of your post - which I found very interesting. But what grabbed my attention in this section is that you highlight the interesting yes-and-no situation involved in the 'easy money' argument. SE could release FFV for every system under the sun, and nobody would mind it at all (as you said, there are people who are happy to purchase and play these ports) ---- unless they aren't delivering in the production of new content. Now, the way the company looks today, this seems to be lacking. And since the flagship titles haven't been received like fudge brownies at a church bakesale, the heat gets turned on ports as well; even if it seems silly, when you think about it, to blame the delay of a behemoth like Versus XIII on a small re-release which surely required only a small team.

And not to further take the point away, but doing so anyway, I agree with both of you. I'd like to add that without the 'easy money' rehashes Squeenix potentially wouldn't have the manpower and resources to make the newer games because they'd have to downsize, or in the extreme, go bust. So the 'intellectual poverty' is maybe a bit of a chicken and egg argument.

Also like to point out that with this continuous stream of remakes I sometimes wonder, based entirely on speculation, whether FF is now a 'feeder' revenue stream for other most successful projects under its big umbrella, for example Deus Ex HR, Thief 4, and Tomb R.... Kingdom Hearts.
