What systems do you have? I know a lot of old games that where, and still are great, but who has the old 8bit systems anymore. if you can get your hands on a Sega Genesis, then the Fantasy Star games are very good. One of them (maybe the best RPG ever, maybe not) you got to control three generations of a family, each time you decided who to marry, and therefor who you would play as in the next generation. Great game play, great story, great concept. Five Stars.

1. Legend of Legaia (Battle system based on fighting games.  Characters can create incredible combo attacks.  Great storyline.  Not hard, but does put up a challenge.)

2. Legend of Dragoon (Dragoon transformations look awesome, as well as, Dragoon magic.  Storyline line a little slow at first, but gets a lot better as it progresses.  Additions are challenging and fun to watch.)

I suggest playing the translated Tales Of Phantasia rom.

dude just play vice city. thats kind of an rpg in a way, but quite a non linear one. its an awesome game.

several comments,
1. earthbound is a grat game if you ignore the fact that the background to all the battles look like the desiners we on drugs, theres a giant monster name "MAGIC SHROOM" and in one part of the game, you have to pick up a pack of something from the back of a counter in a hippie cafe, and afterwords the buildings and cars become rainbow colord.
2. but enough about the heavy drug refrances, the best game i have ever played, yes even better than ff1-6 and ct and lufia2 is secret of mana 2, otherwise known as sword of mana 2 or Seiken Densetsu 3, grat storyline and you get to pick what characters you want to use, how rare is that in an rpg, im not talking about geting a lot of characters and picing what ones to use, i mean at the start of the game you pic 3 people and you stay with them. every charecter can class change to eather light or dark, and then again light or dark.(and no going light than dark is not the same as going dark than light) you can chose out of 6 charactes for your team so there is a max 16384 diffrant team combonation and each is very diffrant.
