Way, way back, back in the day, a hundred years, it seems that way, CoN did the "Final Fantasy Music CoNtest." Really, though, we last did a smackdown here at CoN to pick the best Final Fantasy music seven years ago, and it was a smash. But, there have been several more games in the main Final Fantasy series since then, and we figure it's high time to take a shot at it again, especially in light of the series' 30th anniversary and CoN's 20th anniversary this year.

So, here's the setup: Noctis and friends from Final Fantasy XV have a pretty serious sound system in their car, the Regalia. So many musical options that there's no telling what to play next, so they're going to need some help figuring out what's best. And that's where we come in, by visiting https://regalia.cavesofnarshe.com/ (or on Facebook).

The Regalia Playlist

Starting now, and running through the end of September, everyone out there with a CoN account can pick fifteen songs from Final Fantasy to make up their own preferred playlist. You'll be able to pick from every single numbered entry in the series, including the MMOs, with a couple bonus games that CoN covers to boot (Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics, of course). At the end of September, we'll compile everyone's selections into a 64-song knockout tournament by which we'll determine the best songs from the last thirty years for Noctis to load up as he travels across Eos.

We can discuss the knockout when we get there, so let's dive a little more in to the nomination process starting now. As I mentioned, everyone with a CoN account can go to https://regalia.cavesofnarshe.com/ or the tab on our Facebook page to nominate fifteen songs. They're organized by game, and every one has a listen link so you can familiarize yourself with the song again if you can't quite remember it by name. You can click and drag or doubleclick to add a song to your list (or tap if you're on your tablet), and click or tap the trash can to remove it from the list. You can also click and drag to reorder your list as you make it, but once you submit with the green checkmark, you're locked in.

List the songs in your preferred order, because higher rankings are worth more when we do the seeding. The song you pick for the number one slot is worth 15 ranking points, and the song you choose at #15 is worth just one. Our tournament seedings will be based on the overall ranking points earned by every person's picks, so make sure you give the highest spots in your list to the songs you most badly want to see in the tournament.

Around October 1, we'll shut down the nomination process and take some time to rank all the songs that got nominated to come up with a final bracket of 64. After that, the voting will begin and you all will have the opportunity to vote your favorite nominees to the top. At the end of it all, we'll have a brand-spanking-new 2017 version of the best Final Fantasy song of all time. Or close enough.

The Regalia CoNtest

Once we have our 64 candidates based on your submissions, the contest starts! You'll have a couple weeks to look over the 64 top tracks, and pick what you think the top five will be. People who make those picks will be graded for accuracy once all of the votes have been tallied and we have our winner. We'll compare each person's guesses to the final results, and the top three most accurate players will win prizes:
  1. A signed set of illustrations from Final Fantasy VI through Final Fantasy X by Sarah Childs at Gyzra Ink
  2. A Gyzra Final Fantasy VI illustration plus a bottle of Wiz' Energizing Elixir from Jones Soda
  3. A Gyzra Final Fantasy VI illustration
These prints are no longer available, nor is the soda, so this is the only place you're likely to ever get your hands on them!

If you've got any questions, let us know now so we can make sure your picks get in. You'll get the chance to start voting in the tournament and making your feelings known about each matchup starting in October, so let's get started! Also let us know if you see song names that are not accurate or awkward - there're over 1700 of them in there so odds are we messed some up along the way!

Oh man, it is going to be so hard to choose just 15 tracks! And to then rank them? I'm going to have to think about this for days.

smile.gif I didn't really care to rank them very much, but I did put my very two favorites right at the top.

1. Bike Chase (CT)
2. Crazy Motorcycle Chase (FF7)
3. Battle Scene 2 (FF2)
4. Battle 1 (FF3)
5. The Airship (FF4)
6. Within the Giant (FF4)
7. Ahead On Our Way (FF5)
8. Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5)
9. Techno de Chocobo (FF6)
10. Johnny C. Bad (FF6)
11. Electric de Chocobo (FF7)
12. The Man With The Machine Gun (FF8)
13. Fight 2 (FF4)
14. Samba de Chocobo! (FF4)
15. Fanfare (FF4)

But seriously, Bike Chase from CT would be the thing for going real fast in a car.

Good list, Spooniest! You've reminded me of some favorites I had forgotten. I'm going to have to listen to all the OSTs again. I'm starting to weed through songs by writing all my favorites from this post on index cards, but I know I have more to add.

Rangers51, a slight bug: FF11 & FF14 don't appear in the "go to game" drop down on my Kindle Fire. They do show up when I scroll down the complete list, though.

I have to warn against sharing lists right away, as it might color other people's choices and result in yours not even making the tournament. smile.gif

I could explain how that happened but it would be pretty boring. I'll have it fixed when I do my next code push out to the main site. Thanks!

If you didn't want me to do it, you should put something in the original post that says not to do it.

Upon re-reading with this further bit of information to color my perception better of what you said, it turns out there was a finer point beneath what I thought you meant.

Also, I'm horribly neurotic. smile.gif Fun times.

As of now, we can store your lists for you while you build them. I realize it might be a pretty long process to get things exactly how you want them, so now, if you need to take a break, we'll save a snapshot of your list and offer to load it up for you when you come back, so you can give this very difficult decision all the time you need. smile.gif

This should be fun. biggrin.gif
I probably won't do very well as from what I remember from the last music voting gauntlet my tastes are fairly different from others on the site. But that's alright. FF music is always high quality stuff so even my non-favourites are a joy to revisit.

--------------------
FF games completed: I (psp), II (psp), III (DS), IV (psp), V (GBA), VI (GBA), VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIII, XIV: A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, & Stormblood, XV.
Spin-offs: FFIV: Interlude & The After Years, Crisis Core: FFVII, X-2, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Type-0 HD, Dissidia, Dissidia 012, and Tactics (original & WotL).
Enjoyed them all.

thumbup.gif thumbup.gif but hot d a m n! this is no menial task! I would say every track, every game is noteworthy as a standalone piece of work, regardless of whether or not you have actually played the games or previously heard! Choosing the top 15 and then top 5 out of most of the entire franchise.....hoo, boy but is certainly overdue in my mind! (that was shrewd btw automatically signing me up for the forums along with this playlist poll; longtime lurker here since the 90's. Always been too damn lazy to actually post anything prior to this....!) tongue.gif

Oh, good, I had started writing a response on my phone and then ran out of energy for my slow mobile typing speed. biggrin.gif I'm flattered you find it amazing - odds are I'll blog about the project like I did the logo design sometime down the road; the chance to do a special site like this is a big part of why the game's coming back now after all these years.

And here's a reminder for everyone, please consider sharing on FB and Twitter either when you finish or just by pasting the Regalia URL into a FB post or tweet. We learned the last time we did this that it works best if we get lots of people involved, and that's the way to do it in this day and age.

Oh boy, here we go again biggrin.gif . My picks are submitted. A pity, though, that Secret of Mana wasn't included in this, or even Chrono Cross. I would've included a few entries from those titles, as well.

Yeah, had to draw the line somewhere! I was originally going to leave out the MMOs but include the extra games CoN covers, but I think it would just be too overwhelming to have all of Square Enix represented. Had to stop.

Also, I'm ready to see some more variety in these picks, people! Go out on a limb! wink.gif

My list is mostly sorted; just deciding if I want to toss in more filler from games I haven't played before submitting. EDIT: It's done, though I did tossing in some random "good enough" options at the end to get it up to 15. Why does it require me to fill in all 15 anyways, rrrrgggghhhfff...

Some random commentary on a few of my choices. Spoilers within for FF6, 7, and 8:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
FF6: Ultros opera battle lost out because moogles > octopus with bad teeth %$&# kupo, yo.
FF7; I noomed the battle theme that is easily overshadowed because it's right before One Winged Angel. Take that.
FF8; When Fujin talks normally, it's a big deal. Passed on Man with the Machine Gun because it gets enough recognition already; it is awesome though.
CT: I though of nomming one of several options that are unlikely to be heard all the way through but the ending theme is that poignant.

My filters for choosing were one pick per game and intentionally staying away from the big name songs (no Battle of the Big Bridge, the opera, One-Winged Angel, or Magus' theme, among others). FF9 and CT proved the most difficult for me to pick just one, so many likeable choices.

An update: I've been buried at work and with some traveling recently, so I might not have the next phase of the game (the part where you can enter to win prizes!) ready quite when I thought I would. Don't let that stop you from getting your entries in now, though!

A couple folks have asked in chat to get some general idea of how things are going, so I put together some stats that should be at least a little interesting and generic enough to not mess with anyone's future picks. Plus, it's my chance to do some Neal-style data analytics, woo hoo!

First, worth noting that there are twenty games' worth of music available to nominate. Of those twenty, only three at the time of this writing have no representation in the 64 that will make up the bracket (and help you win prizes) - meaning that there are seventeen distinct games represented so far. If you look at all nominations, at least one track has been nominated from every single game of the twenty, though it must be said that several games have only one or two tracks in the list of nominations at all thus far.

One game has at least one nomination for two-thirds of its entire tracklist, and another game is at over 50% nominated; that's not to say that all of those will make it in to the next round, but it does mean that someone at least thought about a big chunk of those soundtracks on aggregate - the answers to which games these are might surprise you!

Over half of the current top-64 nominations come from the SNES and PlayStation eras of the series, which makes sense because nearly half of the series comes from that time as well, covering virtually all of the 1990's.

There are 1,778 tracks available to nominate, the master list from which we'll take the top 64 to move on. So far, 154 unique tracks have been nominated by at least one person, meaning that just under 9% of all music has tickled someone's fancy.

Without getting too specific, I see at least eighteen different battle themes in the full list of nominations right now - I say "at least" because there might be a few more I don't recognize by name alone. I'm not an encyclopedia. smile.gif I also see five different chocobo-related themes with at least one nomination, too!

Anyone out there have any questions that I might be able to answer in this vein? Hit me up.

Oooh, stats! I double majored in math and computer science so stats excite me.

I still haven't made my picks because i am listening to all the OSTs again first. So far I have a list of about 50 tracks to whittle down, and I've listened to 1-8, 11, & 15. Currently halfway through 9 while working on some crochet. I'm not sure I'll be able to listen to all of 14 before the end if the month. I started listening to a playlist on YouTube, but each track is 10 minutes long, or longer! So I might have to just go with the few tracks of 14 I'm familiar with from Distant Worlds concerts.

I am not at all surprised that so many battle arrangements have been nominated, as they tend to be the more memorable tracks.

And you'll be back for voting on matchups soon enough...

I just pushed out some updates to the Regalia site; what people will notice now is that you can listen to your nominations again if you already have them locked in. Other stuff will be apparent only once we get through the nomination process. smile.gif

Sorting through my picks today! I started with 51. It will be tough to narrow them down to 15 but I think I can do it.

I'm going to take a wild guess that the two representatives with over half of their tunes considered are FF3 and FF13: Lightning Returns. There's some loose logic but I didn't think too deep on this.

Also, where's the announcement that nominations are closed? Unless, that isn't the case...

I really need to actually do this before it gets closed...but it's just so much work to go through so many soundtracks, even though I haven't even played that many of the games...

Edit
So now I have a list of 63 nominees (one of which turns out not to count because it's the "Secret Boss Battle" or beta Tyran Castle and thus not in the actual Chrono Trigger soundtrack) and 85 alternates (one of which also doesn't count, this time because it's the Lunar Core version of the Red Wings theme). I need to pare this down to 15. This will be difficult.
Edit
I'm down to 17 tracks. This is difficult.
Edit
Finally done. FYI my picks all came from somewhere in this list. Also you can totally figure out which games I've played before by looking at this.

FF3
main picks: boss battle, The Final Battle -3-
alternate picks: Jinn's Curse, Tozas, Nepto Shrine, Gishal's Veggies, Flying the Enterprise, The Boundless Ocean, Theme of the Four Old Men, Noah's Lute

alternate picks: Prelude, The Book of Sealings, Exdeath's Castle, Deception, Danger!, Nostalgia (fa so re me fa, so, re), The Day Will Come (so la te re, so, fa, me re do re la), The Four Warriors of Dawn, Intension of the Earth
[NOTE: "Nostalgia", "Reminiscence", and "The Day Will Come" differ as to which tracks the names refer to, depending on the source, so I included a bit of the melody written out in notes. me = Eb, te = Bb]

FF6
main picks: Shadow, Cyan, The Unforgiven, Save Them!, Metamorphosis, Terra, Coin Song, Slam Shuffle, Strago, Another World of Beasts, New Continent, Catastrophe, Gogo Umaro, Dancing Mad (all parts)
alternate picks: The Phantom Train #2, Opening Theme #2 (story), Opening Theme #3 (credits/snowfield), Awakening, Kefka, Troops March On, Wild West, Spinach Rag, Setzer, The Empire Gestahl, Devil's Lab, Mog, Dark World, Searching for Friends, Epitaph, Last Dungeon

FF8

CT

alternate picks: A Presentiment, A Strange Happening, Battle 1, Boss Battle 1, Kingdom Trial, The Hidden Truth, A Shot of Crisis, Mystery of the Past, Robo Gang Johnny, Robo's Theme, Fanfare 2, Burn! Bobonga!, Singing Mountain, Corridors of Time, Undersea Palace, Determination, World Revolution

Yeah, I've kind of played it loosely on closing the nominations right when I said I would, because I've gotten some feedback asking me not to just yet. smile.gif I suspect I'll probably close them this weekend, though I'll keep people posted on here and social media with a couple days' notice.

As to your guess, I didn't actually write them down, but from my recollection, you don't have either one of them quite right. I think that now the list is larger, though, than just two games.

Due to the 15-track limit, I picked some that I felt might be a bit odd but were worthy of some attention, and left out some perennial favorites that I genuinely like. So I probably helped to expand that list beyond two games.

...okay, I left out a LOT of tracks that I genuinely like, considering the size of my original list.

An update: I'll plan on closing down nominations Monday morning, and moving us into predictions (the part where you enter to win prizes!). However, I have a probable hurricane coming to destroy my weekend, so it will depend on whether I have power come Monday or not. smile.gif
