Just curious, because VIII scuppered my enjoyment of the series. I went to revisit FFXII later and didn't enjoy it.

I played a slightly naff demo of FFX-2 but I've been told I'd enjoy the original on numerous occasions. I'm asking for an additional push or parry here, either is fine.

My background is FFVI & FFVII.

You should definitely give it a try. It's certainly a good game.

It's a very, very pretty game. Both the PS2 version and the HD re-releases. I wish it had better travel systems (or just a ****ing world map) but it's a fun journey the first time at least. I'd see if you can get it cheap and at least play the very beginning.

I've seen it from $10-$15 in various places. I personally think it's one of the best, though I have difficulty ranking it.

I, too, enjoyed it, more than I thought I would. The Sphere Grid takes some getting used to, and if you have interest in 100%-ing games, this isn't one I would want to do. But it's a pretty solid experience.

I replay 6 and 7 every couple of years. I have never once felt the need to replay 10. I beat it over a decade ago and never picked it up again. If you think 8 ruined the series for you, I can't see you enjoying 10 that much.

I absolutely love FFX.

FFX has, in my opinion, the best plot of the series; if you're into the narrative component of a game, you'd probably enjoy it. The game builds a really cohesive, compelling world, and there are some really powerful moments of character/party development. I could go on, but I'll stop there biggrin.gif

If you're primarily in it for gameplay strategy/difficulty, FFX may not hold your interest as well. While there are some very well engineered boss battles, in general the combat system is less strenuous. That said, there are a lot of different options available (the Sphere Grid is organized around job classes but enables a fair bit of flexibility: your heavy-hitter, by midgame, could also be a proficient white mage) and quite a bit of weapon/armor customization richness.

That is to say, I don't think liking/disliking FFX is based on whether you liked/disliked FFVIII or FFVI: it depends more on what aspects of either game you liked/disliked. What FFX tries to do well it does very well, but if those aren't the elements that hold your interest, you won't get as much out of it.

FFX is fantastic. The voice acting isn't the best but it is enjoyable and each character is likable, some (Auron, Jecht, Wakka, Kimahri) my favorite in the series. The story is amoung the best in the series, too IMO. It remains consistent and concise for the duration of the game. Some great plot twists and a very emotional game. It does get rather oedipal, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The Sphere Grid system is the best and most fun leveling up system in the series, again, IMO. Each character has a specific role, or job, again and the battle system is turn based, allowing you to switch in any party member at any moment in place of another. Once you go around the entire sphere grid, you can unlock alternate paths, learning any other character's abilities.

The mini-games, mostly but especially blitzball, are great. Blitzball. Oh man. I spent just as much time playing blitzball and recruiting players at some point as I did on the main game.

The main flaw in the game is the lack of an overworld. But the soundtrack is another one of my favorites in the series.

Overall, I consider FFX to be highly under-appreciated, and possibly the best in the series. Granted, I stopped at FFXII (yuck) so I haven't played the last few, but I think FFX nailed it in almost every aspect. It deals with race and class on a small level, but it is at least touched upon unlike in most games. It is definitely a top-3 entry in the series. FFVII, FFIX and FFX are the best 3 consecutive releases in the series.

I do find however, that people either really enjoyed FFX or really didn't like it. I think if you liked FFVII, then you should enjoy FFX. It has more in common with FFVII than with FFVIII.

FFX-2 is a completely different game. I enjoyed going back to the world of FFX, but there was a lot left to be desired and you absolutely need to 100% the game to get an ending that doesn't suck. FFX has a great, great story and ending.

Gameplay is wonderful, graphics and music might even be the best of its generation. I, however can not endorse the story. I very much hate the story. The reason for this is Tidus.

Simpering, childish, and completely vapid, I caught myself, halfway through the story, wondering why he was even in the story. The hero's journey is actually brought about through Yuna, and she is actually the character that develops in the story. If that isn't bad enough, then there's the ending, which finally broke my illusions about the Final Fantasy series (despite my absolute dislike for VIII).

One character shouldn't break a storyline in an FF series, given my distaste for certain characters in the FF games I love (FuSoya, Relm, and Vincent to name a few), but Tidus is the hero of the game. He's the guy we're stuck with though every second of this game, and when he talks, I want to slap him.

Though Blitzball, both the game and the ball (why are you playing a contact sport with deadly weapons? It's akin to playing football with a damned grenade.

I agree with basically everything that Geoffrey Death Penalty wrote. I think the game is a wonderful exercise in world-building and character development, and the gameplay is top-notch - it remains my favorite battle system among numbered FF games. It does raw turn-based (no ATB!) the best you possibly can.

I agree with you re: FF8 and FF12, I don't like either of them and consider FF10 better than any in the series outside of Tactics, 9, and 6.

I'd hate to use the "meant-to-be-that-way" card, but doesn't he kind of make sense? He's basically a star athlete travelling through time Kid in King Arthur's Court-style to a time he's unfamiliar with. Yeah, he's a bit childish, occasionally grating, but he's supposed to be, and if you don't like him there's always enough around because of the great plot, setting, etc. to make him bearable. He's not as good as other main characters, but he's certainly not Squall!

They should've just placed Laguna as the lead, and pursued that story more.

But my point is, I don't think Tidus is Zidane, Terra, or Celes, but he's not a bad lead.
