I question the official-ness of this thread.

I've never played any of the games featuring her. Is it true that she's just Cloud but female?

I'm not sure why one would draw that conclusion, though, so it makes it pretty easy for me to say that. What reasoning have you heard? I, for the record, am also confused as to what this thread is. So now it's "talk about Lightning!" -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I'm not saying whether I concur with the arguments or not, but to my knowledge they run along the lines of: she has a sword she used to be a soldier but now she fights against the organisation she worked for she is sullen, cold and doesn't speak much she has similar blonde-ish spiky-ish hair There may be more, but I can't vouch for them having any greater strength of argument. As far as I'm aware, they were touted in the build up to the first of the XIII saga, and inevitably started by the raging fanboys who took offense at having a female lead. -------------------- We apologise for the inconvenience |

I admit that I have only limited experience with the franchise, but I agree, at least in part, with the "Cloud, but a woman" stance, though less FFVII Cloud than, say, Advent Children Cloud.
Which is to say, "I'm badass and I know it, and I'm my angst and trust issues are all that make me notable"; so also Squall, really. This post has been edited by Lurker on 12th October 2014 02:40 -------------------- I shall now return to my cave |

I honestly don't know anything about Lightning other than her appearance, but what I've heard is that it's her personality that's supposed to be the same. |

If you're comparing her to Cloud and Squall, you've already forgotten to note that she's also named after a weather phenomenon.
Anyway, she looks like a really interesting character, but basically all I've heard of the game is that it plays out like a movie and is otherwise way too slow or something along those lines. Which makes me somewhat hesitant to pick up the game... Much of my opinion of the character is summed up by one line that I have heard her speak in the US localization:
"Worst birthday ever." Firstly, it sounds like something a petulant child would say. It's not just out-of-character, but tripping-on-shrooms-after-a-night-of-partying-in-Dimension-X out of character. I'm supposed to believe this person is a bad-ass soldier, in contrast to her lovestruck sister, and yet she's whining about her birthday being ruined? Who, beyond a certain age, even gives a shit about their birthday? The common cultural trope along these lines is that older people tend to want their close relatives and friends to ignore that it's their birthday, espoused by the phrase "Please don't make a big deal." Secondly, the actress who plays Lightning was severely over-directed. Everything she says hits this one emotional note, constantly, like a clanging alarm clock. It's really off-putting for me. It's made even worse by the fact that people's facial expressions don't ever seem to change in this game, despite it being on what is ostensibly some very advanced hardware. Dragon Quest VIII was able to include facial expressions (on less advanced hardware, for that matter); that FF XIII cannot smacks of laziness to me. And finally, I haven't the slightest objection to a strong female lead, but Lightning does not come off that way to me. Her lack of emotional depth added to the cringe-worthy dialogue severely undercuts any emotional connection I might otherwise have had with her. It's like the writer was thinking strong = mean-spirited. This is a flawed concept for the simple reason that it makes the character unsympathetic in the extreme. Think about Cid, from Final Fantasy IV. Certainly a very boisterous and strong-minded character, but is he ever outright rude or mean (except when provoked, ostensibly by Tellah)? Why does someone have to be rude to come off as "tough?" That just doesn't click with me. Completely Unrelated Article: Lightning is not the first female lead character in the series by a longshot. -------------------- X is blue. |

Lightning is a cool female character but not one of my favs. ; In fact, she's really interesting in the two/three games that she's in. I'm not counting Dissidia 012 yet she's neat in that game as well.
