Caves of Narshe Forums > Chrono Trigger > Why is it called "Confuse"?

It just seems to be a strong 4x physical attack. Does it actually inflict confuse status? If not, why is it called this?

...ohh, I see. It's because now I'm confused.

Yes, you got it in one...Wait...

It's known as Frenzy in the DS version so I guess it's just a mistranslation.

Is it? I never got far enough into the DS version to see it.

It might be a translation error or a production snafu...he might have been intended to have the spell "confuse" which inflicts confusion (noticeably absent from everyone else's spell list unless you count Provoke, which strictly speaking is a Skill not a Spell), but they changed it at the last minute to a strong physical x4 and were going to change the displayed name to Frenzy, but ran out of time to do anything but remove the star from the hex code.

It coulda happent.

I've only ever played the DS version, for the bonus content. But what a strange name. I don't believe it inflicts confuse, as you siad it's only a 4x attack.

Maybe it means Crono is confused, and he attacks four times because, well he's confused. I have no idea.

Chrono Compendium translates the move as "Chaotic Cut," and I have no idea where the name Confuse comes from. I think that the character limit for Techs on the SNES version of the game was 12 or 13 characters. Woolsey et al. definitely could have chosen a more appropriate or sensible name; I haven't the foggiest why they went with Confuse.

I suppose it's not a massive stretch to go from Chaotic/Chaos to Confuse.

Yeah, seems like the idea was some sort of confusing flurry of strikes/feints/etc. that would allow Crono to multihit the enemy in the process.
