The Steal command has one use: get stuff for free that you would otherwise have to pay for or cannot obtain elsewhere.
So is it really worth it to waste Locke's turn every time? What do you usually steal? What do you always steal? What do you choose to pass on? In Zozo, there's the Gigas Glove that you can steal from Hill Gigas. They're worth a lot. I usually go for those, using NoiseBlaster to confuse the Gigas. I try for the Kazekiri/Tempest Blade every time, but I don't always get it. I usually pass on the Debilitator from the Cranes fight. And so on. How about you? -------------------- X is blue. |

Early in the game I use low-level enemies and the like as a free potion factory, and where there's a useful steal available, I'll try for it, but I've honestly never taken full advantage of the steal command like some folks do. I know some people really maximize it, but I've kind of always seen it as a battle turn wasted unless I'm pretty sure the enemy has what I want and I have a good shot at getting it.

I'm with CFC. I don't really recall ever using it extensively in any playthrough of FF6 - I've never felt like it was really necessary for success, and I'm just not that type of completionist gamer.

To make Locke a useable character in the beginning part of the game a good steal is the air lancet from the Tunnel Armr. This gives you a second Air Lancet to use with him and the genji glove and can create a good party. We all love Sabins dual claws but lets be honest...with pummel and then firedance..its really a waste of time to put the GG on him. Edgar with AutoCrossbow/Drill Chainsaw, Celes and Terra with Ice All/Fire All and Cyan with Dispatch it really just makes the most sense to put the Genji Glove on Locke with two Air Lancets and attack anything not standing on the ground....im way off topic.
Number 83 or whatever his name is has a rare steal item in the magitek factory right??? It might be rare drop but ive had 2 glasses of fireball and 4 beers so im a little woowoo right now. Cant you steal a tempest on the mine cart ride? Also a good Genji Glove item for Cyan. Genji Gloves from Dragon on the Floating continent. Easiest on Roms because you can Ctrl F1 save and hit steal, no success, steal, no success, wait wait wait steal Genji Glove YES!!!. Not only in the stealing process but also in the encounter process since the Dragon has only a 1/16 encounter rate up there. Ctrl F1 walk three steps/nope that's a stupid face thing that uses blow fish F1....nope that's a ninja, F1 Ohh snap a dragon..now we're in business Im sure there are better items that I cant think of at the moment. |

I found Locke mainly useless as a character in the endgame since Steal or even Capture/Mug really wasn't that useful.
I'm thinking, maybe when I reply FFVI, I'll do a no-shopping conduct. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. TMNT 3: Radical Rescue tabled: Lost Ruins |

Thats interesting, after the first bit I find Locke to be the best character. GG Hawkeyes at the end of the World of Balance and Valiant Knife/Offering at the end of the World of Ruin. There is a huge misunderstanding about the Valiant Knife, its quite powerful despite what its stats suggest and it ignores defenses. I think people are turned away by the fact that it gets stronger with less health, but it isnt weak with much health, unlike the Atma Weapon which is worthless with less HP.
The ignore defenses properties are obvious when you fight things like cactuars and the VK still does 9999 damage while the other weapons only do 10/12/23 or somewhere in that relm. The only other weapon that competes is the Illumina.....So GG Illumina VK? I dont go that direction to have better party balance. But that is the best weapon combo in the game and since locke is the only character that can use the VK.........maybe gogo? |

You can use Genji Glove and Merit Award together, I guess.

I'll usually pair Locke with the Genji Glove + Thief Gloves/Brigand's Glove, put him in the back row, and then equip him with two weapons that ignore the back row penalty on attack power. The capture/mug command then gives you two attacks, two chances to steal (I think), and the lack of a shield is balanced by taking less damage in the back row. This makes stealing more useful because if you fail to capture the item, Locke has still done damage and you haven't completely wasted his turn.

Depends on the need of the gameplay.
On a low-level run it's important when you have to maximize your inventory. This goes for anygame on low level in general. In any other circumstance where you can do it in leisure it doesn't really matter. You can pick and choose what to and/or even not steal at all. It depends on your goal. You might want a playthrough where the only way to win is to steal everything possible. As I've heard elsewhere, there's no reason to make a game absurdly difficult to beat when others won't legitamitly try. -------------------- https://www.youtube.com/user/Greatermaxim Terra - LV 99 - HP 9999 - MP 999 Equipment - - - Abilities Illumina - - - - - Fight Genji Shield - - Morph Oath Veil - - - - Magic Minerva - - - - - Item Ribbon Economizer |

There are the limited item steals of Tempest from #128, X-Ether from Laser Gun, and Force Armor from Guardian. These I find worth acquiring anytime in normal play. Oh, and Narshe Kefka's Hi-Ether.
As for anything else? Phoenix Downs and Hi-Potions tend to be worthwhile for most of the WoB so I'll go for them anytime I have a decent chance. Potions before Espers are available are handy though not really worth it when it's just Locke and Celes. I have money problems in the WoR so just about anything stolen in the WoB is worthwhile at least for something to be sold for cash. Locke offense in the WoB runs around cast worst so might as well. Late WoR when money is not an issue, there's not a whole lot worth the turn. Elixirs, Megalixers, Impartisans, Thunder Shields, and a handful of animal suits to turn into Genji Armor are about the only steals that are worth the effort to obtain. X-Potions, Hi-Ethers, and Aquilla's rare Economizer are nice to shoot for but not really worthwhile to drag out a battle or grind for, White Dragons X-Potion being a partial exception as it's in the common slot. I suppose Doom's Safety Bit is worthwhile enough to go for and some Imp equips. Everything else is pretty much easier to acquire in bulk by other means. |

I use it in most small battles, but in boss battles I have him fight. Once I get the Thief Glove, I use Mug every time. I always played Locke as a healer anyway, teaching the cure spells first, which makes him a relatively weak fighter; so if no one's low on HP, I don't lose much by having him steal.
