Caves of Narshe Forums > 2017 Regalia Playlist Championship > R2: #15 Black Dream (CT) v. #7 Decisive Battle (CT)

This section of the bracket was made up entirely of CT songs, and after this matchup just one of those four will carry on. That's rough, CT fans, sorry - the brackets can be a harsh mistress. Black Dream didn't have too much trouble beating To Far Away Times in the first round, while Decisive Battle had a tough fight with Schala's Theme before ekeing out a win.

Black Dream is a moody, dark track that plays, yes, during the game's final assault on the Black Omen (whenever you might feel like doing that in time).

Decisive Battle with Magus starts slowly with synthesized wind sounds and a foreboding theme before breaking into battle with a driving bassline.

Ouch! If I recall correctly, I had both of these on my list of 15. And I want both of 'em to move on!

I have to pick one, though, huh? Ah well, as good as Decisive Battle might be, I believe Black Dream has a more unique style. Guess I'll go with that.

Decisive Battle is high-impact but a little monotonous in its first half. The drumbeats in the second half are great though.

But it doesn't beat Black Dream's coldly (and soullessly stylishly) evil atmosphere.

Tough match up, again, which is the territory we're about to wade into, I suppose! Black Dream's overwhelming sense of menace and its drive into the action has beaten out my childhood fascination with Magus and his brooding epic theme!

I should remind everyone of some Chrono Trigger spoilers at the end of the Black Omen:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
If you bring Magus with you to the final battle of the Black Omen, you replace the 2nd boss battle theme, that plays during the final fight with Queen Zeal, with Magus's theme (i.e. Magus's battle theme). Magus has a few choice words for his now-insane mother (though apparently only a few, and she also seems to still see him as the Prophet rather than who he really is).

Just trivia. probably meaningless to this matchup. But whatever.

That trivia influenced my vote (well, it was in the back of my mind before I read the post, pfft, details). Kind of a meta thing for me based on what happens in game.

Wow, this is a really tough one because I feel that I like both of these songs for similar reasons: the way they build and retract, move between "instrumentation," incorporate multiple variations on a distinctive melodies. I've gotta go with Black Dream, if only because it seems to me that it does this more.
