I don't know if this has been done before, but here goes.
Post the games you think are the hardest ever (that you've played). List them in order of difficulty, if you want. Be specific on which part is hard (unless it all is).

Here are mine:

1.) Super Smash Brothers: Melee (Getting the Crazy Hand trophy. It's almost impossible!)

2.) F-Zero GX (Good Lord, this is freakin hard. Story Mode on Very Hard is...like...)

3.) Contra (NES version....hard....omg...)

4.) Super Star Wars (Episode 4-6, they all freakin suck)

Well, those are just some. Er...GO!!!

Posted by: laszlow 1st June 2005 13:29
1. Devil May Cry 3: Dante Must Die mode (go ahead, try it)

2. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (50... levels... urk...)

3. Viewtiful Joe: Ultra V-Rated mode (if anyone can beat Fire Leo on that difficultly with Sylvia, you just might be the best 2D action gamer ever)

4. Ninja Gaiden Hurricane Pack (and you thought it was hard on normal...)

5. F-Zero GX (have to agree with you there...)

Posted by: Mimic 1st June 2005 14:52
I'm not the best gamer in the world, so even normal/hard difficulties get to me.

1. Jak II - I just plain cannot beat the final boss. One battle and I'm done with the game, but I suck so much at it, and lack ammo etc.

2. Devil May Cry 3 - Even Normal mode frustrates the hell out of me. I guess my hand-eye coordination sucks.

3. Viewtiful Joe - I can't quite say why it's so hard. I just die. Alot.

Posted by: SilverFork 1st June 2005 14:53
1. Ninja Gaiden 1 (NES) - Granted, it's been a long time since I've played it, but Jeebus does that final boss suck! Also, level 6-2 is a true testament to how bad this game is out to get me. Really, I've played through enough times to get near the end without dying at all (which ain't easy itself), but once I get up to this point the Ryu Body Count™ starts to skyrocket.

1. Battletoads (NES) - Can anyone really disagree with me here? One of Rare's very few games with a high difficulty, and it can (often) be brutal. 'Specially bad if your controller's just a teeny bit unresponsive.

2. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES & Genesis) - It's a great and humorous game, but it's like you keep playing and wishing the end would come but it doesn't. And all the while it's comparable to being tied to the back bumper of a car and dragged at 55 mph over hot asphalt.

3. Adventure Island (NES) - One life, a drunken-looking beach bum guy and over 60 levels - and lot 'n' lots of monsters fond of projectiles and generally causing much pain. You do the math. This is the only game on this list I still haven't beaten, which you'd think would make it higher numerically. Given enough time, I could probably beat it now, but I don't wanna deal with the frustration anytime soon.

4. Toki (Arcade, NES, Genesis) - I actually never owned this game, but I used to spend hours playing it at a certain arcade. As a monkey who hawks his clearly potent acidic spit at enemies, things should be smooth sailing. But you're "ambushed" too many times by unexpected animals that hate you, puzzles that, more than a few times, force you to exceed your time limit, and the most difficult part of the game, level 6, resets all the continues you’ve stashed away to 5 - even if you managed to get an unlimited number of ‘em. Needless to say, level 6 bites.

5. Ikaruga (GameCube, Dreamcast) - Although it's a "new-school" shooter, it's still one of my favorites of all time. Mainly 'cause it captures the essence of a 2D shooter almost perfectly, and its style wouldn't work out near as well if it were in 3D. Still, getting killed is commonplace and parts are more frustrating than difficult, but it's the kinda frustration that really annoys ya.

I won't even go on to list the games set on the highest difficulty modes...

Posted by: Racthoh 1st June 2005 19:58
Oh Battletoads... many a night I awake screaming to that game...

FFIII without the blessing of savestates. I tried it once resisting the urge to use them. I couldn't do it, just way too hard.

Fester's Quest WITHOUT a turbo controller. Heh, with a turbo controller... beat that game with my feet biggrin.gif

Dragon Warrior I. Yeah, 2 damage a turn against the final boss. Even with Game Genie codes I gave up on this one.

Posted by: baralai888 1st June 2005 21:18
i know what you guys mean on the battletoads...damn it. honestly, perhaps you guys were able to beat this game easy, but i will say it again: star ocean 2! i couldnt beat the last boss if my life depended on it, and i barely got by the guy that yelled "spicule!!!" all the time.....ass

Posted by: Shotgunnova 1st June 2005 22:49
Krusty's Fun House (SNES) was incredibly tedious, not only because there was no way to save your progress, but because the game had you had to run back and forth to unlock doors and kill mice.

Quote
I barely got by the guy who yelled "Spicule!" all the time.

Vespar, right? Yeah, that fight took awhile for me, too. The guy who accompanyed him in battle petrified and poisoned and petrified my characters with that beam attack of his, so it was a pick-and-choose moment.

Killing Mr. Spicule first is the best decision, though.

Shinobi on the PS2. this game hates me. the day i beat it, i literally called everyone that knew about it, and they all said the same thing "you lyin mo'fuka!"

Posted by: Shinjutsei 2nd June 2005 00:55
Yes, Shinobi hurts me. Much.
I commend you on your victory.

You think it's hard now, DMD is unbelievable. I haven't unlocked it yet (still hacking through the more-damaging-and-more-health-enemies hard mode), but on my friend's file it's brutal. Basically, it has hard mode enemies that all have Devil Trigger power. When enemies DT they turn a funny color and get WAY faster and use new, more devastating attacks. I beat DMC3 on normal with a good deal with time and difficulty, and hard mode is manageable, but the few instances I've played DMC have resulted in nothing but embarrassment.

I gave up on that game a long time ago. That 4th world boss...so evil...

Posted by: Super Moogle 3rd June 2005 02:00
Rogue, the only game that goes out of its way to shaft you at every possible opportunity. Not only do the randomized dungeons and items create situations in which you cannot possibly win within the given parameters, but the environment often forces you to play three-quarters of the way through before you realize that you can't actually make it. And just when you think it's all over, surprise! You have to do the whole thing over again, except backwards and with no food. I've never finished Rogue, and I probably never will. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever even met anyone who's completed it.

Posted by: MetroidMorphBall 3rd June 2005 02:45
Beyond the Beyond. Despite the fact that you have a random encounter every five or six steps, the amount of leveling up required to beat the game is absurd. Lack of transporation early on, and really long dungeons, serve to increase the difficulty.

Also, a lot of the characters are Lunar rip offs. That doesn't increase the difficult, but it did piss me off.

Posted by: Shinjutsei 3rd June 2005 12:53
I was going to borrow Beyond the Beyond from a friend...maybe I won't now. 0_o

Posted by: Moglv99 3rd June 2005 23:04
Well I only can think on the Arc the Lad II for PSX, the final boss and the lack of MP make me play this game just one time in my life....you know a game called Lode Runner?? ( Nes, I think-...) damn that's is a hard game, and Lode Runner II is impossible.

Posted by: Tonepoet 5th June 2005 22:35
Tic Tac Toe ~ if you're the second person. I mean, it's just impossible to win if that first guy takes the middle square, the best you can hope for is a tie. Okay, lame joke. Sosumi already. </lamejokes>

Anywho, my vote goes to Ghosts 'n Goblins. There are just no words to describe the difficulty of the game. If level one doesn't totaly shatter your absolutly amazing gaming spirt, level two will. Level two is far from the last level. I almost don't even want to know what level three's like. Almost. It's a fun game for some reason, despite being impossibly hard.

Posted by: Kane 7th June 2005 05:23
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (My friend and I used to play that all the time.......never beat it, w/o cheats anyways, though one time we made it to 46)

Posted by: DarkTonberry34 15th June 2005 02:49
Here are mine:

1. Super Mario Brothers (NES)-The last 2 worlds frustrate me. If you die at the very end, you have to start at the very beginning.mad.gif

2. Ultraman (SNES)-I can't even get past level 1 here. I can't figure out how to kill the guy.

3. Dragonball Z: The Legacy of Goku (GBA)-The Namek Temple is impossible without any outside help (FAQs and strategy guides).

4. Driv3r (PS2)-In one of the missions, a car is rigged with a bomb that will explode if you go below a certain speed. Add to this the crowded, narrow, and winding streets of France, and you got yourself a major pickle.

Posted by: Figaro 15th June 2005 04:01
Well, I'd have to say that F-Zero GX was quite difficult, even though I gave up after like the 2nd level because it was so f'ing hard... and FFT hurt me much because I didn't really prepare for battles. But that's just me and my stupidity.

Oh, and currently, Burnout 3 is giving me a fun headache.

Posted by: ryoko_hanashi 15th June 2005 04:19
1. Hands down Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts(SNES). Granted Ghost 'n Goblins(NES) was hard but I found the SNES version beyond impossible.

2. Gradius II (NES). Go ahead, try it without using the Konami Code, continues, or save states. I dare you. It's impossible I tells you.

3. Crystalis (NES). Need I say anything about how hard this game is?

4. Bubble Bobble (NES). Not that hard until the last quarter of the game, that's when the true fun begins.

5. Q*bert (NES). $#@%!?

6. Super Mario Kart 64 (N64) on anything higher than 150cc. The AI cheats! I swear it does!

7. Einhander (PS). Could be easier if the bosses wouldn't mesmerize me every time I played.

8. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES). Quite possibly one of my favorite difficult games due to the fact that I actually beat it without a Game Genie.

9. Zelda II: The Adventures of Link (NES). DAMN YOU SHADOW LINK!! I could probably beat it if it weren't for him.

10. Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2). Regular play is just fine, once you get online however it's insane how many experts there are. Good thing I mastered Hara-Kiris. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Spiffyness 15th June 2005 04:40
You really think Crystalis is hard? I'll admit, there were some REALLY tough parts, but for the most part it was about average. I beat it without a huge amount of trouble (amazing game, there).

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 15th June 2005 18:30
I found Metal Gear Solid for the PSX to be kinda hard. The VR training missions (timed) I have a lot of difficulty with, thus I haven't much experience with gun training. As for gameplay, on my first playthrough, I barely got through the first boss, and I have NEVER gotten past the second boss. I'm trying again and I avoid walkthroughs and tips and tricks when I play any game for the first time through. I love this gaming series, though.

Posted by: footbigmike 15th June 2005 18:43
1. Perfect dark for the GB. I cant even get past the training missions!! It's like, dont run, or youll get caught, don't be seen, or you'll get caught. If you walk, you'll be seen. dry.gif

2. Sonic adventures DX. The chao races. Not exactly hard it just takes a LOT of time to train them up.

3.Timesplitters 2. Dam. Hard mode. Chopper, zombies, fire, S.W.A.T teams, snipers etc. *sigh*. I'll do it eventually

Grandia Extreme - PS2

I wish I wouldn't have sold it off. I just remember it being so fun and so challenging. I was stuck on the giant crab-like boss. So yeah, my vote goes to Grandia.

Posted by: Fadien 15th June 2005 21:12
FF2, PSX version.

Man, I thought it was a fun game. I really did. It bugged me how my spells would gain levels, and it would cost more to cast them. You couldn't cast a low level cure spell at the end of the game. And the stat system. Ugggg... I was going through the cave to get to the final dungon, and I could get a few levels in, and monsters would just wear my team down. I wish I could have finished it, but the game frustrated me so much, and I sold it off.

Gauntlet - NES

101 levels IIRC... If you die, you start over, and your HP drops with time spent in the game..... Me and my brother got to level 94 before, and died... never touched it again.

Rygar - NES

One of the most underrated games IMO. It was a great game. Unlimited lives, but no way to save, and it was a LONG game.

Posted by: karasuman 15th June 2005 21:18
Gauntlet - NES:
I couldn't get past the low 30s, but my father was very good at the game, and I used to watch him play. He couldn't clear the second to last level. He quit. It looked hard.

Super Mario Bros. 2 - NES:
Everyone seems to think that SMB1 was harder, but, man, I can't deal with this game at all. Once I get to world four of five, it's all over for me.

Illusion of Gaia - SNES:
I can get most of the way through this game, and I think I even managed to beat it once, but I can't do the bonus dungeon at all.

Evergrace - PS2:
Again with the bonus dungeon. The rest of the game isn't bad at all.

FFX-2 - PS2:
This is embarrassing. There's some kind of huge dragon that just eats me. It's been too long since I played for me to remember what it's called. I think it was in another bonus dungeon deal.

Posted by: Sephirothff7 22nd June 2005 01:11
1.sonic adventure 2 last stage (extreamly hard)

2.Shining force 1 last boss (dark dragon i think) only was able to do once

Posted by: Spiffyness 22nd June 2005 01:33
Here's one: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysey. Even with unlimited lives, ya gotta admit THAT game was hard. Never played Exodus. Munch was pretty tough, too, but not as hard as Oddysey.

Posted by: Shadow Monroe 22nd June 2005 02:16
Super Mario Bros. the Lost Levels, as it is on Super Mario All-Stars(SNES).
If you thought that SMB1 was hard, it is actually quite easy compared to this game.
It was impossible for me to beat. Most of the levels require you to make insane jumps with enemies coming at you as soon as you land. And it has Poison Mushrooms, which are really annoying.
I have never beaten it, even with an unlimited lives cheat!

Posted by: Sephiroth 24th June 2005 23:50
Zombies Ate My Neighbors, hands down. that game was a freakin' Stallion. There were 55 levels guys, don't forget the secret ones.

Posted by: Kablizzy 25th June 2005 08:05
http://www.harveycartel.org/metanet/n.html is absolutely the hardest, most rewarding, and most addictive game I've run across. Hands down. Only 200 or so people have beaten it, like, ever.

Edit: The fact that I actually know that fact saddens me.

Posted by: northwindbrat 25th June 2005 09:39
Argh!!! I agree!! It got me so frustrated everytime I couldn't complete a level that I quit it for good.

Hmm, never gave me much trouble. Even in expert mode(psx) I was able to beat it without too much trouble. Then again I gain levels insanely, so that it's too easy.
And no, I don't use the lete river cheat. I wish someone would make a hack where the only thing changed is the monster stats, that way it would be way harder.
Try gaining tons of levels.

Anywho, my hardest game goes to FF4 hard type. Damn man, the bosses in that were demons sent by satin himself. I was able to get to the end of the game and the final save point, with lvls 60 and above, but then my short attention span got to me and i stopped playing it for a while. The game was lost when I moved so I was never able to finish it.

I am playing a translated ff4ht rom though, current progress: About to enter the tower of Zot.

Damn Valvalis! mad.gif

He's talking about the Japanese FF III, for NES, which is quite difficult. Anyone who thinks that FF VI/IIIus is a very difficult game is seriously lacking in skillz.

Posted by: Bulbonius 25th June 2005 20:04

Can't find a friggin translation.

Sorry I must stop referring to FFVI as FF3.

Damn american translators.

Yeah, FF3 was pretty hard, but it was only really challenging (for me) at the final boss. Of course, I was like, level 55, so yeah...

It was just a little annoying since he'd only use Flare Wave OVER AND OVER!!! mad.gif

Really makes me wish that wasn't his only attack.

The hardest game i ever played was... well i never really had problems with most games but i think that zombies ate my neighbors was very diffcult near the end around lvl 50, it took me quiet a while to beat it.

Ha dam on hard is a walk in the park compared to wild west. Cant even do that on cooperative. As soon as you begin this guy pops round the corner and BAM! shotgun headshot takes most of your life. You have to dodge him immediately, and thats just the beginning lol. i dread to think what robot factory is like on hard.

I'd agree with TS2 as hardest that i have played (if you want to get all platinum awards. Managed i think 46 platinum and 20 gold, or around that mark

Let's see:
Super Mario Bros. 1-3 for the NES (It took me forever to beat them!)
Star Fox (SNES): fun game, but a couple of levels seem impossible.
Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA): it can be hard and frusturating just doing everyhting, especially when the game has super-cheap opponents.
Final Fantasy V: The Bosses are SO darn Hard, they are just too hard.

That's it.

Something tells me you haven't beaten the game yet.... Heven or Hell is the mode unlocked after DMD, and it's the same as Hard Mode except you can kill any enemy in one shot and any enemy can kill you in one shot. My friend Katie, who's beaten the game on DMD and HOH, says that it was easier than Normal, because you can just use Gunslinger and spam E&I the entire game.

1) Battletoads - This thread should actually be titled "Hardest Game (Besides Battletoads)" because there are games that have come close, but NOTHING is as hard as that game. But it was honestly huge amounts of fun through it all. An unlimited lives cheat is all but a requirement for anyone that hasn't logged the time required to memorize every level, every jump, and every vehicle stage, but I've got to give it up for how different and interesting they made each level.

2) Super Ghouls & Ghosts - Most of the time it's "Take two hits and you're dead", which was hard enough. But no, this game threw an especially cruel curve ball at you. When you get to the end of the game, they literally send you BACK to the beginning to tell you to find a special weapon to kill the end guy with, and you have to then do EVERY SINGLE LEVEL. AGAIN. And each level is HARDER. This was a pretty unforgiving game and the double jumps were very difficult to master.

Posted by: chevleclair 6th July 2017 09:39
I'll try to name games by certain categories. I won't get all categories, but I'll get as many as I remember...(some games fit in multiple genres)

Platformer: Battletoads

Sports: Tecmo World Wrestling

Adventure/Action: Zelda 2: Adventure of Link

RPG: Fallout (original)

FPS: Bayou Billy

Shooter: Gradius I

Survival Horror: System Shock

Puzzle: Lilly Pad (can't remember the original title, but you have to touch all of the lily pads/blocks/spaces without backtracking)

Interactive/Visual Novel: Shadowgate

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Ninja gaiden NES:Pit falls everywhere, monsters who push you in pits, infinite spawning eagles who gang up on you and either push you in the pit or kill you outright, and non respawning items needed to survive.Fleamen at the last level wil drive you insane, and if you die at the boss and run out of lives, you start at the beginning of the stage which is 6-1.
Ghost and goblins NES SNES PSP:2 hits you die, ridiculously underpowered weapons, impossible adds, and having to beat the game twice.
Ninja turtles NES:It starts off easy, but soon as you start getting to stage 3 and 4, things become very intense in difficulty, and to make matters worse:Pizza doesn't respawn if you are in a area, but monsters do.You got ridiculous platform jumps, the electricity algae on a small time limit and you can't swim.On the 2 last levels, enemies with way too much health and move too fast to kil, making it ridiculous.
Dark Souls PS3:The game is very very challenging, and there are plenty of trial and error moments, or dying by accidentally walking off a cliff or rolling into a pit. Some bosses have insane hitboxes and a lot or most can at the most 2 shot or even 3 shot you..If you want to really challenge, then go to new game+7 and play on sl1 with only fists, and see if your sanity wil remain intact.
Wizardry Apple 2:First of all:Its very old, so you need to investigate how to set up a save file and draw your map. This game gets harder with enemies who drain your permanent stats such as vampires and there are pitfall traps in all sorts of areas, and navigating these kinds of places is not fun when you got a teleporter who teleports you in some unspecified area and you have to find out where you are so you can draw the maps by hand.
Baldurs gate PC:Can be frustrating, especially if you don't know how to play and fight tougher enemies who will kill you.It plays much like other real time games where you pause the game and think through what you have to do to win.Quests are at times confusing and figuring out where to go can be annoying.
Vampire the masquerade redemption PC:Some bosses are legendary in difficulty due to the fact that you lose control due to your character being frenzied. The bosses often might drop you down to quarter health in 1 or 2 hits, leading to lots of reloading and lots of swearing and frustration.I actually beat all the bosses luckily, but it took me a long time to beat the first optional boss, and second.
Castlevania NES:PItfalls with enemies who push you in, and what is called the hallway of pain. The reason its called this,is because you have to:1Get to the boss with a good weapon, such as boomerang or holy water.2:Try to get one of the roman numerals so you get multiple shots 3:Get there with full life if you can, and four try to kill the boss without dying so you don't have to get more stuff. If you survived death and frankenstein with that fleaman, then it gets worse yet.The giant bat monster becomes a regular monster ou have to avoid and you got fleamen which spawn in a tight quarter that jump up platforms and hit you constantly, making the last level a pain.

I've beaten Ninja Gaiden happy.gif

and Castlevania 1 no continues. Although you'd find that hard to believe after https://youtu.be/V_IyNkBMxRE sometime.

tongue.gif snuck two links to my own channel in hope no one notices

Phantasy Star II could be up there for one of the hardest JRPGs ever, maybe?

Posted by: Magitek_slayer 8th July 2017 22:30
Blinge a guy named bleeding bullet on youtube did a live stream and he actually beat dark souls without dying once. Not SL1 but he beat it.

There are some crazy people i've heard of.I heard there was this guy who beat dark souls hacked so he had 1 health and 1 stamina just to add more difficulty.

Posted by: Blinge Odonata 9th July 2017 18:23
Yeah the latter would be LobosJR. I'm a fan of his challenge runs, cool guy
( he also plays in a covers band called The Returners wink.gif )

Not dying once is probably way easier in Dark Souls than in Ninja Gaiden or CVIII .
There's plenty of ways to make Souls easier for yourself after all.

The thing that stops me attempting a deathless run is Bed of Chaos.

Posted by: Magitek_slayer 9th July 2017 19:42
Yeah lobosJr thats the guy i heard about from bullet who does crazy challenges.
