I've never quite understood what it is about Matoya's Cave that makes it great, but given its #4 seed, matching that of its 2010 run, others must feel the same way. Matoya is at once a critical but also fleeting character in Final Fantasy, and with so few tracks in that game's limited soundtrack it's interesting that she got her own. The 8-bit syntheisizer emulating a harpsichord is somehow cheery and upbeat given that it's a theme for a blinded witch living in a cave.
If you want a game's soundtrack that is mainly about war, Final Fantasy Tactics is where you go. One war ends, another begins, skirmishes crop up between armies and individuals. As one of the many themes that play over the top of individual battles in Tactics, you're introduced to Trisection as soon as the swords come out, and it immediately sets the tone. Trisection won a matchup back in 2010, the only FFT song to do so. |

I played FFT a bit, enough to remember this soundtrack and it was pretty damn great. Matoya's Cave is alright I guess but Trisection is awesome music while playing!

Matoya's Cave was actually my ringtone assigned to my wife for probably close to five years, in its PSP incarnation. I think that probably illustrates where my vote is going.
I recently changed the ringtone to The Promise from FF13, if you're curious. It didn't make the cut here. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

As the lone Ivalice track in the competition (you disappoint me, CoN ), this is the track I plan to stick with over any other, likely to its bitter end. I think it's that good.

Ahh, B minor vs. B minor!
While Matoya's cave is definitely tuneful, Trisection does a lot more for me. Plus, it's also the only FFT track in the tournament (and thus the only Hitoshi Sakimoto track, I think?). I LOVE the FFT soundtrack, despite not having actually played FFT myself and never even actually having heard these in-game. But I am a big fan of Sakimoto's use of rhythm and harmony. My vote goes to Trisection, of course. -------------------- current games (2024-02-19): Fairy Fencer F ADF Pokémon Perfect Crystal finished so far this year: Gato Roboto drowning, drowning New Super Mario Bros. Trisection is gonna' get it from me. It just speaks to the tone of the game so swell, with such intensity and a sweeping drive to it. So great.
A bummer Matoya's Theme must go down, as it does just have that certain something that sticks with you, but it has lost to a worthy competitor. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Greg |
