...is hilarious. My husband, a pretty avid gamer, is SO BAD at turn-based RPG's it blows my mind! I wanted to share with you guys a few pretty hilarious moments we've encountered:

Doing Locke's Scenario in Figaro:
-fights the magitek soldier, who you never win to, unsuccessfully steals from him then loses in one shot- Locke says something like, "I should steal myself some clothes to get past the guards!"
"WTF?!"
-goes into the items shop, fights merchant, wins, gets cocky, fights magitek soldier again.-
"WTF he one-shot me!"
I couldn't stop laughing. Up until that point, he'd used the "Steal" option every battle.

When you had to save Terra using the Moogles, I actually found this fascinating:

-stands in the EXACT SAME DEFAULT PLACE with every Moogle and Locke without moving-
Me: Oh, honey, no you can't do that, you have to block off the passageways and-
oh. Huh. You CAN do that, huh?

Apparently, since the Moogles are positioned and such a way and the enemies come at you slowly and patiently enough, you literally don't have to move at all in that fight. Never would have tried that technique on my own!

Also, crazily enough, he discovered the Moogle's Den during Terra's Scenario before the World of Ruin. I never even thought to do that! He was thoroughly confused, though, when he gets to this one room with new music and moogles hanging out.

Side note: He wasn't raised on these graphics, so he doesn't exactly have the imagination to know what everything is.

Cyan's scene, in Doma, discovering Owayne and Elaine:
"Was his wife a midget or something?"
"Ummm, what?!"
"Yeah, why's his wife got a hat on and is so tiny?"
"That's the SON. He's dressed in a weird old school newspaper boy type outfit. The wife is on the floor upside down, SEE? That's her dress, and that's her hair!"
"What?? Ohh, I thought that was like a boquet of flowers of something."
To be fair she doesn't look very detailed (spoilers?)

Anyway, it's pretty crazy watchign him play through: me, who can navigate this game like the back of my hand, and he, who wasn't raised on this era of graphics and half the time can't find the door/entrance he's supposed to take and often goes, "What am I even supposed to do?!"

Any of you guys gotten the chance to watch someone play for the first time?

Yes! That's hysterical. I was fortunate enough to be here for my husband's first play through, as well. He started the series with IV back when he was little so the graphics did not bother him at all, thankfully.

Watching him prep for the moogle rescue scene was interesting and kind of inspiring. He planned a complete tactical maneuver to take out each enemy in the quickest way possible. It was fantastic!

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
He was also dead set on the sad beginning to the world of ruin planning to let Cid die rather than saving him. He wanted to see Celes' attempt at suicide to try to understand why I'm not very fond of her at all...you don't become a general by being unable to handle catastrophic situations or the possibility of your boyfriend's death...Long story short: -Terra fan rampage.- xD

This is an entirely reasonable notion but I left for a moment and had misheard a question he had asked and he ended up getting the happier beginning and arrival at the mainland with Cid in tow and saved his file in the same slot rather than in a separate so he could catch the scene. I should not have laughed, the look on his face was hysterical.[

The cute one was how deeply he got into the tale of Terra's lineage. You know a game is good when you can rage over the villains past actions. : 3

After several more years, you should get your daughter to play this, and record the results.

I couldn't stop laughing. Up until that point, he'd used the "Steal" option every battle.

To be fair...
1. Steal has never succeeded in actually stealing the enemy's appearance before.
2. Steal looks more like a viable option when you're not the only character fighting.
3. It's a very typical assumption that you should be able to win every JRPG battle -- especially if you haven't played JRPGs before. And the ones you don't win are usually followed by a cutscene immediately after you lose, rather than a game over forcing you to think about your actions. Gameplay and story segregation, unfortunately.

Mr. Chocobo is playing through for the first time as we speak! He's playing the GBA Slattery translation via the GameCube adapter on our biggish TV--much easier on the eyeballs--and is getting ready to assail the Floating Continent tonight.

His first FF, and his first JRPG period, was FFVII, so he's not particularly acclimated to the graphics. He has a hard time, for instance, intuiting where he can walk around the back of obstructions or under eaves and such, and he has a hard time identifying doors in texture rich places like the Magitek Factory.

He's sort of latched onto Edgar, which makes sense, considering that Mr. Chocobo is himself a tinkerer and works in electronic assembly, so he's always building something. I have never in my life seen anyone exploit Noiseblaster as much as he has. It's been awesome.

He's also very defensive of poor Terra. When Banon was pressuring her to help out, he got upset and blurted out, "Banon, you [censored, kupo!]. What if Terra just wants to live her life? What if she wants to move off somewhere and have a farm or something, and maybe raise chickens, or have a cat, or maybe a kid or something?"

I haven't told him about
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Terra's kid collection in Mobliz
yet. I wonder how he'll take that.

Oh, and he loves Strago and Cyan, thinks Setzer is a jerk, and is also super defensive of Gau. When I asked him what he thinks of Locke and Celes, he said, "I'm afraid to answer, because if I'm wrong you might kill me." cool.gif

Anyhow, it's been fascinating, and I can't wait to see him tackle the Continent and the aftermath.

I loved watching my husband's first play through. He hated Locke for a long time because someone awful turned the character upside down and used said upside down description to insult him. And...well...now we're dying a pair of old khakis black for the new version of his cosplay of Locke at a coming convention. He got about as into it as I do; raging at Kefka almost as loud as I did, practically drooled over the in depth story lines, and falling hard for Terra as a character. It was adorable. The best part was when he snapped his fingers upon Edgar's first appearance, pointed at the screen and shouted 'Douchebag!' before the character even got his second line out. I laughed so hard that I fell off of the sofa.

As for disliking Setzer, I can understand why.

-Braces her costume closet door shut as someone within begins pounding on it.-

He does have some flaws that bother me at certain points of the game, mostly the absurd obsession with kidnapping an opera singer.

-Kicks the door hard when shouting begins from within.-

I'm still a big fan however, he's one of my favorite characters out of the entire game series. With his back story, I'd be a lot more broken than he is, even after all of the years he's had to come to grips with it. It saddens me a bit that they didn't make him a more present character and gave him a more developed personality. I ended up giving him the most unexpected personality I could ever imagine when I first made the costume and went to an event in it. He apparently refers to himself in the third person at random as 'The Captain' and is quite loud. Most of the people on the costume scene out here recognize me specifically as Setzer and if they don't know my name simply call me 'The Captain.' It's good fun but it certainly made my husband look at me funny when the character didn't behave in that fashion.

-Steps away from the door as the violence inside her closet stops and peeks inside to ensure that her costume has peacefully hung itself back up. Tosses a coin in for good measure and locks the door.-

Gau and Strago never caught much attention from us, but my husband loved Cyan; he grew up at renaissance festivals so knights are a big thing for him. He also managed to get addicted to Shadow's storyline and had me sit with him and make sure that he didn't leave Shadow behind on the floating continent. After that he went on a five hour playing session using me as an info box of where to find the rest of the characters.

Keep us posted on Mr. Chocobo's play through; I look forward to his reaction to Terra's lifestyle and the aftermath in general.

He's...err...very, very angry about the Floating Continent and its immediate aftermath. That is about as pleasantly as I can put it. Angry that all his efforts went to naught. And even angrier about the fact that he labored and labored to

save Cid, but, like almost all of us the first time, failed at it despite my helping him. (The game screwed him; he got several screens of only 1 bad fish, or no fish at all.) And then Celes' cliffside scene really kicked him in the gut.

He was actually so mad after that that he saved his game, quit for the night, and, well...I think he may be taking a break for a while to process it. He's pretty upset. I attempted to prevail upon him that things look up almost immediately after this, and that the ultimate theme of the game is hope in the midst of the broken things of life, but for the time being, he's (quite understandably) upset. My sliding over into literature analysis mode did not help, either, as he was not interested in my thoughts on how this sequence of events is actually better for the narrative than the alternative. That went over like a lead balloon. sa-eng99.gif

I gotta remind myself from time to time that we strange mutants who pick text apart for fun and profit get excited about strange things. pinch.gif

But I feel it's important to point out that I don't blame him. Heck, the first time I did the Solitary Island back in '94, even with Woolsey's forcibly censored lines, I knew what was up, and being an angsty, emotional teenager who had latched onto Celes, I was completely destroyed by the scene. I debated for days on whether to spoil/warn Mr. Chocobo in advance, as he'd been upset enough about Doma. I elected not to do so...and now I think maybe I should have prepared him a bit better.

Regarding your cosplay, though, that sounds awesome. I fear at 33 I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for cosplay, but I like to see great examples when others do it. biggrin.gif

My husband latched on to Celes as well, especially after that scene. My first play through I would have killed to kick her off the cliff myself...But, we all know that I have problems.
He'd had that part of the story ruined for him ages ago by some obsessed friends of his, so he was ready, just not expecting it at that point in the game. But, to my giggle fit, he messed up on the save screen and managed to save the day rather than failing, but couldn't go back to see both versions of the Solitary Island scene. I'm going to do a speed run through the game again so he can see it.

I understand your side of the scene being better for the narrative (the fact that I dislike the character being set aside) but my husband disagrees. Granted, he's the kind who loves a story full of happy endings; but it was the sadder version of the scene that drew me further into the story. After the lighter side it took him a while to pick it up again and play more and I could easily see that I had always been right in the thought that without the sadder part of the scene, the beginning of the second half was just missing something. It's almost like it lacked a reason to really dive in a keep going. He preferred it, however and did in fact continue to play, so it's not as bad as it could be. Honestly, I think opting not to spoil it for him was the better choice, the game would not have had the impact it relies so heavily on if you had and as the story starts to uplift, it wouldn't have that same hopeful and victorious feel.

As for cosplay, I know people far older than myself (50's) that still throw on the costume and go out to compete (and win!). Personally, at 27, I'm thinking I need to get my last dream cosplay (Frog - Chrono Trigger) out of the way and put it down, even with some projects left undone.

I've always seen that scene as more or less crucial for Celes' development because
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
although before the end of the WoB, she's mostly an aloof, confident character, that aspect of her depends on how she fits into institutions established by other people. As a general, in Japanese, she's referred to as the invincible general (shogun, no less!) Celes. So she's largely defined by her role as a general...and that requires an army and a nation. When she's saved by Locke and joins the Returners, her function in the story is relative to Locke, relative to the Returners, and such. So again, how she functions depends on the company she keeps.

And she's about to set up another relationship along those lines in terms of defining herself as Cid's granddaughter when he dies. So for the first time, she's left alone, to define herself on her own. This, for me, explains why she can at once be a good general and also experience this kind of helplessness. It's only after that low point that she can start to take steps toward defining herself on her own terms and act in accordance with what she wants.

So for me, in the scene where she attempts suicide, she's hitting rock bottom (no pun intended) and she's defining her own identity and picking herself back up with a new sense of what's important to her, and it's that thing that enables her to take her first steps forward to even entertain the possibility of seeking for friends and having a bit of hope. The alternative, where it's Cid who basically tells her what to do and gives her permission to hope, denies the character that moment of growth toward real independence and her own answer to the game's central question--at least IMO. YMMV.

Mr. Chocobo seems to more agree with your husband, though, in that he'd prefer a happier, less ambiguous scene, especially after the mandatory failures of the previous sequence. I'm hoping that when he does pick up the controller again, he'll get at least as far as rounding up the brothers Figaro and heading over to Mobliz to see Terra, if not as far as the Setzer sequence.

As to cosplay, I'd love to see an awesome Frog! He was probably one of my favorite CT characters. I don't think I'll ever have the tall and waifish good looks of Terra or of Celes, the latter being my preferred dream VI cosplay...and the tattoos I've collected over the years sure wouldn't help any...but I've considered trying to talk Mr. Chocobo into a Biggs and Wedge team-up, or perhaps trying to figure out Gogo, whose outfit I've always loved. If I had infinite money and a good armorer on call, though, I would probably do Kain or Dark Knight Cecil. Sadly, I'm more of a costume wearer than a costume maker, though, so it almost feels like that defeats the purpose

As I've mentioned in a few other threads, I recently played through FF6 with my wife. It's such an important part of my adolescence that I really wanted to share it with her.

We actually played two players. Not sure if either of you knew this, but in the SNES and PS1 versions you can assign characters to controller 1 or controller 2 so that each of you can control certain actions in battle. This made the experience a lot more fun than just me watching her play. At first, I walked around towns and stuff. Then I gave her controller 1 and let her do the exploration.

She did not really enjoy random battles. It bored her real quick, and in some long dungeons she'd even fall asleep. But eventually she got more into it as she developed a better understanding of the nuances of status ailments and elementals (e.g. fire is weak to ice and vice versa).

Still, the main thing I wanted to share with her was the story, and she did enjoy that, the characters, and the music. She's not a fan of post-apocalyptic storylines so we had some issues with the World of Ruin, lol, but eventually she was determined to "find our friends" and I had to laugh when we got the airship back and I told her "Searching For Friends" was the name of the new overworld music. She was quite attached to both Terra and Celes, but think she had more of a fondness for the latter as the love story with Locke developed.

Noiseblaster is great! Especially for the beginning of the game. I used this a lot on the latest playthrough. Most of the early enemies are susceptible to it, and you can use that turn to heal up while they attack each other.

I did, actually! This is one of the ways I would play with my kid brother, who is five years my junior, way back when. He was still pretty young then, and a boost in the form of the illusion of co-op was fairly helpful to him early on while he was learning the game mechanics.

Mr. Chocobo shares your wife's frustration with the random encounters. He's become accustomed to enemies he can see on the screen before he gets to them, so stepping back in time to instances where they just pop up on you has been the source of much grumbling. When I told him later he'd be able to get a relic that would eliminate random encounters entirely, his reply was, "Oh, thank [kupo!] God..." biggrin.gif

Apologies for the back to back posts. I know it's something of a no-no, so please forgive me? unsure.gif

However, St Khael did ask for updates on Mr. Chocobo's progress, and he's forged ahead into the World of Ruin, so I thought I'd pass along an update. Since spoilers are involved, I'll make use of that tag below.

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
In one night alone, he rounded up Sabin, Edgar, Setzer, Cyan, and Gau with particular enthusiasm, and he did drop by to see Terra in Mobliz.

I asked him how he felt about Terra's circumstances, and his observation was that he's glad she's finally able to make her own decisions, that Kefka's sins are now off the charts in terms of their ability to be quantified, and that he understands entirely why Terra would want to stay in Mobliz. He did want to slap Duane in the mouth, though, it seemed liked. wink.gif

His comment regarding Daryl/Darril after the tomb was, "Man, I bet she was one badass lady." I tend to agree.

He was also pretty upset at Cyan's stringing the lady in Maranda along, but he softened on that when he got to Cyan himself, and he was intrigued that Cyan's been taking steps to address his deficiencies, both with machines and with himself. Sadly, he also accidentally sold Cyan's only katana (the Murasame) for spending money, and now we're going to have to run Cyan's dream or sacrifice something at the Colosseum or Moogle Raid a dungeon to get him a new one. Oops!

He's still mourning for Cid and General Leo.

Oh, and he seems unconcerned with finding Locke with any speed. (BLASPHEMY!)

He is, though, interested in finding Shadow and Mog and Relm pretty quickly, and he's figured out the connection between Shadow and Relm courtesy of who can and cannot equip the Memento Ring. I asked him where his loyalties now seem to stand, and he said he's feeling more empathy for Celes and for Sabin overall.

He seems to be digging the open-ended nature of the WoR and the higher concentration of happier outcomes, for the most part, and so it'll be interesting to see where things go from here.

Locke is usually one of the last characters I get back in the World of Ruin too. Not because I don't like him, but because the Phoenix Cave is a two party dungeon with some higher level enemies.

He's usually last or next to last for me, too, in all fairness. Partly it's, as MMB suggested, the toughness of the dungeon, but also it's because narratively, it seems most fitting for him to be last or almost last (sometimes I pick up Terra last to 'give her time to think'). He's Celes' original motivation in the "find my friends" part of the game, and his comments at the end of his cut scene feel like they're a prelude to endgame in a pretty direct sense.

...but this doesn't keep me from being antsy about finding him, all the same. wink.gif

Right now Mr. Chocobo is rounding up rages on the Veldt..and saying he wishes he had Shadow back. Lucky for him he's about to do the Veldt Cave and all of that. I suspect he'll be doing Owzer's house and then probably Doma Castle after that, and/or he may go to the Zone Eater or grab Mog, since I've shared with him the joys of the Moogle Raid. But I've pretty much quit actively guiding him at this point, except for when he requests direct help, since there's no one particular correct way to do the WoR. So we shall see where his intuition takes him!

ETA: Tonight we...
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
ran the Veldt cave and Owzer's house; picked up Relm, Shadow, Strago, and Mog; and Moogle-Raided the Fanatics' Tower. We also had a run-in with Deathgaze/Doomgaze and won some stuff in the Coliseum. In the Fanatics' Tower, Mr. Chocobo got caught while trying to sneak past the Holy Dragon to get to the kagenui dagger, and although he was kind of under-level for the encounter, he promptly slapped a silence spell on the dragon--and it took--and he then happily blasted it into oblivion.

Oh, and it was also decided that Shadow talks like Batman.

Best line of the night: "Ladies and gentlemen...my moogle is no longer naked." (Said after equipping Mog.)

This has been a really fun topic to read.

As much as I love Locke, he's close to my favorite... sometimes I'll put him off until later for the aforementioned reason that the dungeon is a pain in the ass. All of the multi party dungeons provide some aggravation, though Locke, the loot overall and Phoenix are all really good.

I'm sure I forgot many things but something pops to mind.

Dad: Is that a martini they're passing on their heads. (Refers to the arrow that indicates active turn of character in battle.)

Mom to Mog: Is that part of Pokemon. (I can see that being confused easily)

Sibling: (Took it seriously, found a couple things I didn't)

Friends: (Various gameplay. Many needed help and came to me to get past certain parts.)

My own take on the game. Knew it would lead to apolaypse from double sided map in original game. Thought certain characters had fewer/more prominent roles. Other interesting preconceptions I can't remember.
