In a website it is mentioned this, here the link:

========

There are 3 situations, of which the most important is that which I put below.

SITUATION:
When asked at G-Garden whether she still liked Seifer

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
Rinoa: If I didn't, I wouldn't be talking about it.

ORIGINAL:
Rinoa: If I did I couldn't talk about it like this.

COMPARISON:
Huh? o.O I checked another source, and it bears out the story guide book, too. It seems the translators either made a huge boo-boo, or mistranslated on purpose to create a lover's triangle between Seifer, Squall, and Rinoa. Whether to go with the English translation or not is up to the gamer, but it seems Rinoa wasn't originally the "tart" she's made out to be in the English version.

This is quite interesting, thanks for sharing (and besides that, welcome to CoN)!

One of the other two sections also pertains to Rinoa and Seifer, so I'll quote that here as well:

Quote
Situation:
When Selphie wondered why Seifer came to the Timber Broadcast Station.
English Translation:
Rinoa: I think...he came to help us, the 'Forest Owls'. I talked about it a lot with him.
Original:
Rinoa: I think he came because of the 'Forest Owls'. I asked him for advice on a lot of things.

This alteration seems to follow the same pattern, emphasizing a bit more carryover of the prior Rinoa x Seifer relationship. Saying that she "talked about it a lot with him" is much more personal than just asking him for advice, a function of his job as SeeD. Further, in the English there is an added ellipsis (she pauses to think - wistfully?) followed by guess that he came to "help us," which again sounds more personal and less formal than saying that he came "because of the 'Forest Owls.'"

I personally like the English version for both of these, as a bit of love triangle at the beginning contributes to the dichotomy established between Squall and Seifer, while also foreshadowing Squall's, erm, transformation. The two rivals are, after all, similar in many ways, as symbolized in their mirrored scars. Yet Squall, as much of a wet blanket as he is, has at least the seeds of compassion - something which Rinoa sees in him from the beginning that is not present in the man she recently declined, Seifer.

Agree, thanks for sharing! I never knew this, but I'm glad I do now. Not sure which I prefer, to be honest. I agree that the English versions definitely imply a greater connection between Rinoa and Seifer, and yeah, it does give greater cause to a love triangle and the friction between Squall/Seifer.

But the Japanese version certainly makes Rinoa less cold to Squall's feelings early on. I like both!
