Does anyone happen to know how often the enemies you face in Battle Square change throughout the game? Are there even set points at which it changes?

when i played, it seemed to me that they got better as my characters leveled up, but maybe that was just random?

Levels have nothing to do with this. The Battle Square enemies change at two set points in the plot.

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
The first change is after acquiring the Tiny Bronco and Cid joins as a selectable member. The second is after obtaining the Highwind and Cloud rejoins the party in Disc 2.

OK, so that would indicate that there are three lists, and they are fixed in time. Can you verify that?

Thankfully, others have already done the work of documenting exactly what monsters appear in the Battle Square as it would take days to verify the enemy lists first hand. I was not even aware there were two separate groups before I read about it in the FAQs. My source is Apathetic Aardvark's FAQ at GameFAQs. Beware: wall of text approaching.

Modified from original content to remove spoilers and proprietory information. Going for W-Summon is enough for me to vouch for the formations in set 3. While I can personally attest to seeing nearly every group in set 2, I have little personal experience with the formations in Set 1 past the 4th battle.
