was final fantasy IX a pale imitation of FFVI?

Does anyone think that Final Fantasy IX was an attempt (poor, though it still was a good game) at a Playstation version of Final Fantasy VI?

(does anyone think that the FF series will attempt to return to its roots(medieval/fantasy setting, etc.)).

Sorry, but I think that Square tried to make a game like FF IV, V, VI on the PS, and they could have done better (FFVI is STILL the best FF game).

Other than having a big kingdom that invades other places (which is similar only in its oversimplified version) they aren't alike.
They had already come out with a PSX version of FFVI before they made IX (Anthologies)
If Medieval-based is your only comparison, then FFVI is a poor SNES version of FFII

Why is this in the FFVI section? The question is about FFIX.

I don't see any reason to say that FFIX was a cheap knockoff of FFVI. For one thing, they bill it as a return to the crystals story; that would imply that they were copying FFIV or FFV. If you ask me, FFIX is just kinda lame in general, but I think it's more of a poor addition to the series as a whole than an attempt to reproduce aspects of FFVI in particular.

theres no differeces in FF6 on PS1 as far as i know

back to topic: 9 was very different from 6, KingofFigaro. The only similarites you use are are extermely poor ones to base such an idea on, and even my few are not enough. Lets take a little look at this, shall we?

Similarites
-Medieval Setting
-Airships
-Large nation invading others using a new weapon (Magitek/Black Mages)
-
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
The First major characters we meet and control are not truly human. Half-Human, Half-Esper Terra and Genome Zidane

Differneces
-FF9's got Black Mages. 6 didn't
-Alexandria was actually only the most powerful nation in terms of Naval might, and land forces when the Mages came into the armoury. Lindblum's Airships could ensure Superiority of the air , sea, and cause major problems for ground troops, and unliek Modern aircraft, hold ground
-Chocobos actually have more of a role in 9
-Kuja was not ever in the employ of Alexandria, Kefka was in the employ of the empire

(Note: At the moment, im rushed for time, so the most major differences i can think of have been put up. More will go up when i'm back on , assuming the topics not been closed )

FF9 was a tribute to all the past FF's. That's probably why it seems like they're similarities between 9 and 6. In 9, you can find items ranging from Excalibur to the rat's tail. You can even play FF6 music at a certain point in the game. With all that, they gave it as original plot as they could while sticking to the tradional games that it was a tribute to.

If you're talking about Black Mage Village's gramophone, it was FFIII's music that could be played, not FFVI's.

The big kingdoms invading others isn't an actual similarity.
In VI, The Empire invaded weaker, neighboring villages. There is no indication that any others were nearly as powerful. The way Edgar was pussyfooting around with Kefka in the beginning shows he didn't really stand a chance, and Doma fell easily, once Leo left. In IX, Brahne was invading nearby kingdoms, ignoring the small fries (Treno, etc). These Kingdoms stood a decent chance, if Brahne hadn't had the Black Mages and Eidolons. The weakest one they went against was Cleyra, as indicated by a few comments about Black Mages and Eidolons.
In VI, The Empire's purpose for invading was for general, financial/real estate power. Brahne invaded for the Jewels, a sort of Mystic power.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Brahne's attack on Kuja could be related to this lust for Mystic power. Kuja was the next magically powerful character in the game

The Empire's main weapon was their own, acheived through years of research and development, using both of its trial-and-error results. Brahne purchased her Black Mages from Kuja just before invasion, and took Dagger's Eidolons from her (whereas the Emperor put the magic into people/machines)
Kefka was the most trusted, right-hand man of the Emperor. The Emperor was the one who had him infused with magic, and sent him on missions. Kuja was a merchant only selling Brahne her weapons. He visited her after ONE invasion was already complete, and never got involved, let alone get his hands dirty.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Where Kefka was "upgraded," Kuja was manufactured entirely by Garland. If there was a link to be made there, then it would have been Brahne.

Airships
VI's airships were few, and a semi-secret between two rogues. IX's airships were varied and wide, a common form of transportation and trade.

I think the simularitys between FF IX and FF IV, V, and VI had more to do with marketing. Final Fantasy VIII wasn't a very successful game, thus Square released a game simular to all these old games that they know were good, with a couple of original twists, turns, and dashes of lemon. Guarenteed seller.

Judging by all the posts here so far I see no reason for us to believe that they are alike, yet.

I can't believe the question has even come up. FF9 is it's own seperate game, with very vague and very general similarities to other FF games, but that's merely because it's a series. Not necessarily the same world from game to game, but a series nonetheless.

I don't see enough evidence to support your claim, KoF. And as for the small references to past FFs, just about everything does that. Ever notice that a comedy series will throw in references to past episodes, or like in a Flash series, the creator will throw something into the background from a completely unrealted episode, etc. Like, in Zelda 64, you can look in a window and see framed pictures of the Mario cast. Just little things that designers throw in to amuse themselves and anyone else who understands the reference.

FFIX was the second best game in the series, next to VII, it had one of the best plots I've ever seen, and it definitely had the best ending, i dont see why everyone doesnt like it? and its not an imitation of VI, the plots are completely different, Kefka went insane when he became so powerful and wanted to destroy the world to 'build a monument to nonexistence', Kuja feared death when he found he was mortal so he wanted to destroy the world so it couldnt exist without him,

how could you think they had anything in common!?

I knew this topic would continually come back to haunt me pinch.gif . When I posted it I hadn't played the game in a long time. I've played it since, and though I still think that it's nowhere near as good as FF VI, I believe that I was basing the similarities on vague memories, not concrete facts. So now it should be put to rest. happy.gif .
