My first FF post under my "new" name. smile.gif

I want to know you guys' opinion of Quina from FF9. I don't think I've heard of a character that gets quite as much grief both in his/her own game or in real life. Zidane says he's "stuck" with Quina before fighting the Earth Guardian, and sometimes I think I'm the only FF9 player that seems to enjoy using him/her in my party.

So what do you guys think? Is it because of his/her sprite? Dialogue? Think Blue Magic is useless or that Quina doesn't have enough to choose from? Are his/her physical attacks a bit too jumpy? Are forks gay? (Say "yes" to that, and I'll kill you laugh.gif ) Is he/she just out of place in the game?

...Or do you like him/her?

Personally, I love having him/her in my party. "Eat" and "Cook" become almost totally useless later in the game, but by that point, Quina is a powerhouse against bosses. Anyone that has beaten Ozma without Quina, my hat is off to. I attack Ozma's MP with "Magic Hammer", counter "Curse" with "Angel's Snack", keep overall damage reduced with "Big Guard", and if my main medic is dead, I use "White Wind" instead. Without Quina, I'm pretty much useless against Ozma.

Pile on!

I liked Quina (s/he looks like a chick to me, but whatever tongue.gif) Then again, I love all of the "nonsense" characters. (Gogo, Cait Sith, etc.)

Blue Magic rocks. Especially in FFIX, Blue Magics are very helpful. The only way to get Auto-Life, Big Guard, Mustard Bomb, Magic Hammer, White Wind, Angel's Snack, and the global status-attacks and Level spells. And Limit Globe! Neccesary to survive in a Level One Ozma challenge!

Quina's very useful. (And if you really like catching frogs, you can power up Frog Drop. But I suck at catching frogs. Meh.)

My only complaint is that s/he uses up alot of MP. (Which makes sense, getting all those powerful spells.)

Quina's odd and has a stupid, gluttonous personality which kind of makes him/her have a single-mindedness, but as a mage, s/he's very versatile. Auto-Life and White Wind can be gotten fairly early (D2), and many other skills can be gotten just in the area around the Chocobo's Forest and Dragon's Gate, so it makes the collection rates easier. Frog Drop, of course, is pretty easy to max out once you get all the marshes available, and it's consistant for a low MP, so that's reason enough for me to use her. As pointed out, his/her skills take massive amounts of MP to use, it seems. Mighty Guard at 56, for one? Weak.

Forks aren't reliable damage-dealers, either, but the Needle Fork can come in handy on those Level 1 challenges, if you get lucky enough to petrify things with it. So, I guess I'm pretty fond of Quina, even if I don't use him/her all the time.

I think Quina's fairly useful. Big Guard and White Wind are as useful as they have been in the past, Frog Drop is one of the game's four or five guaranteed 9999ers, and her lategame weapons and armor are quite strong. Angel's Snack has its uses, but the fact that it uses up four Remedy items gets annoying. I don't use Quina as often as you seem to, if only because I'm a bigger fan of Steiner, Freya, and Vivi.

And yeah, I am probably the only person in the world that thinks that Ozma was not a terribly difficult postgame boss. I beat it rather easily with Zidane, Dagger, Freya, and Steiner.

Personally, I can't stand comical relief. I like my games/movies/whatever to be serious, intense, and basically, "an experience." The good kind of experience you keep fond memories of, not the "wow, I feel like I've grown up a little ^-^" one. Comical relief characters just scream out "Hey guys, we can't keep the plot interesting enough at this point so here's some funnnies to take your mind away from it all." to me. Even when it isn't the case.

That being said, I hate Quina. End of story. There's one thing that it contributed to the storyline and my attachment to FF9's characters: I felt Zidane's pain. sad.gif He and I shared a bond whenever Quina was forced into the active party, a sacred, mutual feeling of discouragement.

It's a shame though. If Quina weren't such a sad excuse for a character, it could be extremely useful. Blue magic is always very versatile. But giving my party an edge for the price of dragging Quina along? I'll pass. smile.gif

I won't deny that Quina was useful. He can be an immensely powerful character if you take the time to sit there and get all the blue magic. ("No can eat~! Make weaker!") >_O

I'll have to take Silverlance's stance on this. I hate him/her. Too goofy, too pointless. It just seemed like he was just there, like everyone in the party looks at him once and a while and thinks "what the hell is he still following us for?". Everyone else in the story had a reason to be in the party.

I also have a lot of problems about people who can't properly speak english, and have to resort to caveman speech. This is a lot of why I usually don't name him/her Quina, instead I name him something funny. The most polite of which I think has been "Moron". I've also had the tendency to name Steiner in a similar fashion, and giggle when Garnet says "Don't follow us anymore, Idiot!" XD

Good times. tongue.gif

I HATE him! He is just so pointless! His weapons are dorky and he is annoying! I wish that he could just die after the Cleyra thing! Grr! Rage! Oh, and did I mention how dumb frog catching is? And how annoying his theme music is? KILL QUINA!!!

Quina's my favorite playable character battle-wise strictly because s/he's a Blue Mage (my favorite overall character class) with versatile skills and his/her forks are so cool; stick a fork in him, he's done biggrin.gif . The wedding with Vivi was very funny.

Pointless and annoying. I really just dislike Quina. Blue Magic rocks, but if I have to use Quina, I'll go without Blue Magic for this one

Posted by: GamblingCat 13th March 2006 14:11
I use Quina, since quina can own with the right set of abilites too.

Posted by: karasuman 13th March 2006 14:27
I thought Quina was kinda funny, but I don't recall getting much good out of her in battles, despite using her an awful lot. Blue magic always seems to be too little bang for too much buck.

I'm a fence-sitter when it comes to Quina; I can use her, but usually opt not to. Still, when it comes to character growth and the overall feeling that they're accomplishing some goal when they're in the party, Quina's backpeddling the entire way. I mean, s/he wants to go into the world with the party...to eat things. And that's the only goal. S/he talks like a goomba, and isn't much use plot-wise, I say. If someone said they purposely skipped him/her until Disc 2 because Quina messed up all the good scenes, I couldn't hold that against them.

Also, I think Quina's type of "funny" would be filed under the "stupid funny" type. S/he is definitely not witty in the least, and is rather headstrong and foolish. For instance, in Cleyra, s/he is so hungry that s/he jumps in the antlion's sandpit and then gives out some stupid like about "I'm getting dizzzzzzzzzzzy!". Useful in battle, but kick him/her to the curb when it comes to anything else.

All my friends hated her (I call Quina a her) but I liked her. Her forks can be strong and she knows handy blue magic.

I LOVE Quina! I, for one do not take these things to seriously. Blue magic is the greatest and Quina is just quirky and well...er...cute. What wrong with cute?

Posted by: FabulousFreebird 14th March 2006 17:24
I would use the terms insane or grotesque over cute. I love Quina, but "cute" is far from the word I would use to describe him/her.

Posted by: Zeromus_X 14th March 2006 18:04
After completing my latest game just now, I like Quina a bit more. Limit Globe requires less work than the other "up to 9,999" attacks. Auto-Life -> Limit Globe. Keep blasting out 9s to obliterate anything! She must be essential in a Level One Ozma challenge.

I just wish "Eat" was better. Like, it didn't require me to have them at 25% or lower to eat. Granted, s/he does have "Cook" as her Trance(50% to eat), but you don't get it all the time, and it's really the least useful Trance. Maybe they could've given her/him the ability to cast Blue Magic for one MP or something....s/he just has a bad Trance.

But eating reminded me of catching monsters in FFV though...

I have one thing to say about characters that horribly suck as people in a very non-serious way while possessing some sort of powered ability... GO TO HELL! You were tolerable the first time, Cait Sith, it doesn't mean I'll crap you Tiffany cuff-links.

You do realize Quina had more lines than Freya. I, for one, am outraged. This suggestion that being stupid entitles you to be in everyone's face more often is not only a lie, it's anti-... anti-... anti-cool.

Posted by: The Red Death 20th March 2006 15:29
Well lets face it Quina fills the space in your party on disk 1. So atleast there is a little bit more extra damage being inflicted on the enemy every round. To be honest she/he is most likely the worst charecter in the game (No offence to quina fans) but with out her I would never of got past the Gizamaluke dragon thingy. To me he was one of the hardest bosses in the game.

Posted by: ultimage 20th March 2006 19:50
I liked Quina, actually. I wish more FFs had quirky characters like this.. My least favourites from FF IX were Freya and Amarant... never used them.

actually... Quina and Vivi were the only characters I liked. Loved the game, but the characters were boring/annoying.

Posted by: Zodiac 20th March 2006 21:23
Most hated characters often comes to be the most useful ones. I hate that thing but I still use it. Eat/Cook acts like quarter/demi to finish off an enemy. Can be useful but annoying if you waste a turn with it and end up having it tell you: "me can no eat, not bleeding 'nough juicy juice!".

The whole character is just stupid, let's face it. Don't tell me a big fat stupid thing holding a fork and catching/eating frogs that is wearing a cook's hat was the greatest idea ever. Let's burn Quina to charcoal. smile.gif

Let's not mention how catching frogs is BORING.

Posted by: The Red Death 20th March 2006 21:32
As useful as she/he can be I totally agree with you, I'll heat the BBQ up now!

Posted by: Elena1999 21st March 2006 05:17
I don't use Quina unless I have to. I've never really enjoyed Blue Mages. I'm not arguing this point but to me Quina is a girl and she is one not because of anything in game but a real life person she reminds me of. She reminds me of my brother's ex-girlfriend actually. Especially when she talks about being hungry. My brother's ex-girlfriend was always hungry and she'd speak in broken English a lot (on purpose though, it was actually kind of cute).

Posted by: SaffireWeapon 21st March 2006 05:26
Final Fantasy IX is weird, Quina just makes it weirder, you can aslo change the weird word for better.

Overall Quina is a pretty decent character, and if I'm not mistaken there was just one attribute that was very low and caused her amount of HP damage to be "jumpy". Quina's Blue Magic is very helpful, but once you get Freya, having Quina is pointless, my favorite party is Zidane, Steiner, Freya, (Dagger or Eiko).
