Caves of Narshe Forums > 2017 Regalia Playlist Championship > E8: #13 Trisection (FFT) v. #15 Black Dream (CT)

The two lowest seeds remaining in our game! Trisection, while a very good track, has frustrated me personally by taking out some of my absolute favorites in every round this year: Matoya's Cave, Dust to Dust, and Cape Caem. Seriously, all three of those were in my personal nominees to the game, ugh. Black Dream took out two other CT songs, To Far Away Times and Decisive Battle with Magus, and then FF9's You're Not Alone most recently.

If you want a game's soundtrack that is mainly about war, Final Fantasy Tactics is where you go. As one of the many themes that play over the top of individual battles in the game, you're introduced to Trisection as soon as the swords come out, and it immediately sets the tone.

Black Dream is a moody, dark track that plays, yes, during the game's final assault on the Black Omen (whenever you might feel like doing that in time).

I really like the key of B minor and the Dust to Dust vs. Trisection matchup was really difficult as a result. But yeah.

FWIW Black Dream's intro is in B minor, its first part is in G minor, and its second part is in A minor (arguably).

I voted Trisection. Both are powerfully evocative tracks, and if anything, Black Dream is more directly evocative, while Trisection has a wider array of harmonic creativity.

...okay, fine, I just do want a Hitoshi Sakimoto track to get into the finals. Yasunori Mitsuda's work with Chrono Trigger is impressive, of course, but Sakimoto's got a more consistent craftsmanship to his work, in my opinion.

I already said that Trisection is my top dog in this competition, but I gotta say that voting against Black Dream (also among my list of 15) is rather painful for me. Then again, I can see Trisection being the underdog in this match-up, so all the more reason for me to back it here.

Oh gosh, this.

Both tracks are among my faves.

I've preferred every song Trisection has beaten so far to Trisection. But oddly enough, the elite eight matchup is where that streak ends. I like Black Dream but head to head with a fellow battle theme Trisection is gonna win out.
