People are saying "Oh, its embarrasing having a warning." Why not just avoid being warned? Be kind and helpful to each other and all the staff at CoN. They all do such a great job I think they should be congratulated... so... CONGRATULATIONS!!! And thank you for all your hard work guys. If I can ever be of assistance with anything dont hesitate to ask. biggrin.gif

Yeah yeah I know the topic's been dead for three months, but I have a question. How many people have been banned? I've only actually seen one, xboltx or something of the like.

I am quite livid at a certianstaff member.

They said that the worst way to get the warn meter lowered is by asking. Can Rangers-51 explain this? Is it the case that the warning is supposed to be perminant?

My warning was at 20% for what must've been over a year. wink.gif Mainly because I never bothered to bring it up with anyone, though.

Truly, I don't think warnings should be reset. If you've been warned, it's probably because you deserved it. If you've been warned 5x, that is, if moderators judged your actions negative enough to warrant deciding to warn you multiple times, maybe it's time you take a long break from the board and think about what you're doing wrong.

But then again, everyone deserves a second chance.

You'll get over it, I'm sure.

I got warned once over bringing religion into a thread. It stayed there for what I *think* was two months? I bugged Josh to lower it a few times, to no avail. After two months, though, one day he just popped into my PM to say that it had been dropped. It was a nice way to go about it, on his end.

This isn't school, man. You don't get a note home to the parents if you're warned. Just let it ride, and in a few months bring it up to a mod that you'd like it dropped, if they see fit to do so. They're not an unreasonable bunch of people.

And here I thought that you were supposed to feel that it was okay to ask if you thought you'd been on good behavior for a while. Honestly, whichever staff member said that probably just doesn't like you, and that guideline is really interpreted to mean "you can ask--but don't, because you were dumb enough to get warned in the first place, so you're probably wrong, and we can't tell you not to ask or we come off like nazis, so we'll just be nazis in private." That's how life is.

Ask when you feel that you've been on good behaviour, have been contributing in a positive way to the site or the quality of forum discussion, and haven't been irritating to staff. If you feel that you meet those criteria, and you ask, and it doesn't get lowered, odds are staff don't agree.

Complaining about it doesn't help.

Okay, this topic really did not need to be revived for this nonsense.

I have something to add.

For the first warning i got.

I wasn't attacking.

I was trying to clarify that there are sometimes good reasons something isn't liked and gets bad review, but i also clarified later that there must also be a good reason something gets good reviews, otherwise it would be just plain bad.

As for my second warning, well it was my fault for not thinking about the warning.

I never got any warnings before in the past.

According to R51's mod edits of your warned posts, you appear to have earned both of those warnings for profanity and not for personal attacks. If you just use the f-word a little less then those warnings will reduce and disappear with time.

Since this thread's been revived, I think it's a good time to point out that if you feel your warning was not justified or that you've been better behaved and want your warning reduced, that you should contact someone on staff directly. We used to try to keep an eye on such things, but frankly there's not much time to do so these days. Don't feel afraid to contact us, as long as you're not a jerk about it the worst you can hear is "no."

Why is there a warn level under my profile when i post? What does it mean? I'm confused. I don't know if this is on the right forum, but whatever. Why is it there?

Thanks

A couple of people asked this in chat, too, so I should probably clarify it.

Except for the staff, everyone has a warning meter, but the catch is, you can only see your own.

We thought this was better than hanging a big WARNED tag and custom title around your neck and shaming you all over the place, particularly if you only did something minor.  Plus, it allows us a much greater level of control over how much you're warned, rather than just on or off.

So from now on, we might warn you for more minor offences than before, but don't worry, little guys: only you and the evil staff of doom can see.

People who were in the WARNED group on the old forum have now lost the tag, and gained 60% in new warnings, regardless of the severity of what they were warned for.  I was simply too lazy to calculate warn labels for specific people. thumbup.gif

If your warning meter sits on zero, you're doing well. happy.gif

Pinning this for reference.  If you have any further warn-related questions (other than about your own warning level), do feel free to add them here.
