SPOILER ALERT!  Highlight to view:
The Rat Tail, if I remember correctly, is the item you get in the land of Summoned monsters beyond the warp point in the first level.  This is the vital key to getting the vital Adamant required to make Excalibur!  Here's how you get it.

Take your newfound Rat Tail and go back to the overworld.  Make sure you're on your yellow airship, not the one with the drill on it.  Use your yellow airship to pick up the hovercraft and head northeast of Mysidia.  Land in the town of Silvera and board your hovercraft.  Ride the shallows to the little cave that is southeast of Silvera's coast.  Inside, a man there will give you some Adamant for your Rat Tail.  Take that adamant and head back to the underground.  Head south past the dwarven castle to the Smith's shop.  Go in the house, go up the stairs, and give the Adamant to the Smith.  (You can also get an elixir in the bookshelf in his bedroom).  The Smith will take your Legend sword that you received in Mt. Ordeals and forge Excalibur.  I'm not quite sure on how long you must wait to get the sword, but I don't recall it being too long.  After the period of time, he'll give you the Excalibur.  Later on in the game you can return to the Smith's shop and see that one of the dwarves is now selling throwing darts for Edge.  Hope that helps!

If all else fails, read the walkthrough provided on this site if there are any inconsistencies with what I said.  Enjoy!
