Anyone have any hobbies besides video games?

I tend to mimic people alot.  (hence the avatar)  But I also do some writing, including short stories and poetry.

I know theirs artists and writers that contribute, but surely there's some that havent mentioned it or don't contribute.  (I could but I'm not to happy with it.)

You're soaking in it.

I write, read, and I collect ancient-style weapons (swords, daggers, sais, stars, etc.)

i love music more than anything else, and my dream was always to go somewhere with my music, so im always kind of saddened when i know i cant have that cuz im gonna be in the army for the next six years.  i like to play guitar, bass, harmonica, and sometimes drums when i come across a set.  if i could ever find someone who bootlegged one of my shows or if i had a good recording, i would make a site or something and post links if anyone was interested.  i dont think lyrics or anything like that is welcome on the fanart/fanfic page, and i also dont want to offend anyone (particularly the webmaster or staff) because there is some rather harsh language in a few and somewhat violent subjects to a lot of my songs and i wouldnt want to offend anyone that didnt care for my views or ideas. im kind of an over-the-top kind of person, and not everyone likes that, so i pretty much keep it to myself.

i also work at a butcher shop, which although i get paid to do it, i would probably do it for free because its an easy job and you meet a lot of nice people and its a good skill to have i guess. im the only person i know who doesnt dread going to work 7 days a week, i actually look forward to it and count down the hours. stop thinking weird things about me.

thats about it, i dont get out much.

Hobbies, eh?

Music is THE most important thing in life. (aside from family, friends, etc.) From the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep, I'm listening to something which I tend to call "g00d music". Heck, I even go to sleep while listening to music.
I collect cd's. At last count, I had 134. I like to buy a couple of different cd's every couple of weeks, hence the sig.
Top 10 Bands-
-Rage Against the Machine
-Nonpoint
-tool
-System of a Down
-311
-Red HOt Chili Peppers
-Local H
-Offspring
-Stone Temple Pilots
-Foo Fighters

I also play music, as many of you know. I'm a professional ameteur at the bass (does that make sense?) I play in a band called Amoxicillin. Right now, we just do songs from other bands we like, but we've recently started to write our own stuff. Besides the bass, I'm a pro at the trumpet (ph33r my brass power!) Been playing it since the fourth grade. I also play set, though not good enough to be bragging. And I have some skills on the piano/keyboard.

Sports also a big part of my life. I love playing basketball, tennis, golf, baseball, and roller hockey. And I'm an avid sports watcher as well. I watch nearly anything on ESPN or Fox Sports Net.

I like to write short stories. To date, I have completed about 6 or 7 short stories (1 submitted to CoN) and have about 10-13 that are left unfiinished. I aspire to become a newspaper columnist when I graduate from high school. So writing is important to me.

Between all that, school, (bleh :p)  and working at a movie theater, those are my hobbies.

I like to read, mostly fantasy. There's the whole video game thing. Right now I'm addicted to FIFA 2003. Love music and all that. Intramural season has just starter so I've started playing soccer again. Sleep has become a hobby of mine since it requires some ingenuity to get it in with my homework among other things.

The closest thing I have to a hobby is my writing and the occasional game playing; I don't do much with my life. :shakeshead:

Posted by: Gears 10th April 2003 16:44
Sports is my life, it doesn't count as a hobby. That said, my hobbies include:

Music. I love music, mostly concious hip-hop, also a little R&B and Jazz. I think I'll imitate Sabin and list my top ten artists/groups:
Black Star
The Roots
De La Soul
J-Live
Mission
Common
Wu-Tang
Outkast
Pharcyde
Tribe Called Quest

Reading, Writing, Biking, and Chess also qualify, but a little less enthusiastically than music.

I play bass! Something both Tim and I forgot to mention is that we're in the same band. I play bass and lead vocals, Tim is the drummer, and then of course we have a lead guitarist (she's not a CoN member, so you wouldn't know her).

Posted by: Master Vivi 11th April 2003 02:54
Making music -guitar, bass (play in a band that actually plays decent venues :D)

Video Games

Listening to music - Beatles, Pink Floyd, Sublime, Bob Marley, Deftones, Disco Biscuits, 2 Skinnee J's

Piercings - I am fascinated with body modifications, currently have 3/8" earlobes (stretching to 7/16") and eyebrow.  Planning on doing tongue soon.  I am fascinated with the anceint cutural aspects especially.  My choice of piercings is related to the tribal signifigance of them (ask me in chat and I can explain :D)

I'm an eccentric person with boring hobbies ¬.¬  I like to: read and analyze children's literature (reading in general isn't a hobby; it's something I do...like breathing), Victorian fashion and culture, 1920's fashion and culture, T.S. Eliot, Tennyson, classical Greek and Roman literature, geisha culture, collect interesting poker cards, watch anime, critically analyze anime, write fiction, draw, follow certain illustrators and artists, indulge in Japanese pop culture, and be as strange as possible.

I'm an Asian Studies major now, so I also spend a lot of time looking at Japanese society, culture, and history, and especially at gender issues.  So a hobby has turned into actual academic research.  I'll be doing it for the rest of my life now ^^;

Posted by: BGrugby 11th April 2003 03:15
my hobbies include sports mostly football, wrestling, and rugby (BGSU RUGBY SWEET 16 BOUND, wish me luck), coaching wrestling, playing guitar and writing songs, drinking and partying, and history especially the Civil War (I have visited many battlesites and will visit the greatest battlefield in American history this summer, Gettysburg).

My hobbies include:

TRYING TO write poetry (got great inspiration, but not enough percentage in the drinks :p )

Trying to invent/master new tricks with my playing-chain. :D

Quake3Arena. I like playing with anime-originating models (Zero, Cloud Strife, Sephiroth, Oni Link, Fuchikoma, Vivi...)

And looking up stuff in the internet ;>

if you like civil war sites, i can assure you 100% that you will enjoy gettysburg, especially if you havent already been there. go to downtown gettysburg and look at all the shops and other buildings, they havent changed in over 175 years (theres even a building with a cannon shell sticking out of the second story wall). make sure to visit the bloody angle, the peach orchard and devils den in particular. im sure you will appreciate the town and all the battlesites.

As a hallmark of my family, I do everything (though not at the same time). I try to focus on things which lead to a full, hearty life. Things such as music, liturature, learning, potatoes, and the great outdoors. I would have to say that the hobby which I take part in most often is thinking.

Edit: By liturature, I meant both writting and reading.

Posted by: Pyro6662 16th April 2003 13:13
I mostly read but I also play Magic. I listen to a lot of music, not as much as Sabin, but it is still a major factor in my life.

potatoes? care to explain Iain. I didn't know  potatoes could be a hobby :)

I second that motion. Potatoes as in "Potato Gun" or "Couch Potato"?

Does not the preparation and consumption of potatoes meet this description? :E
And Dark Paladin, don't tell me you'd waste perfectly good potatoes in such a way. :blah:

I used to play Saxophone and Basson, but have since slacked off of my music playing.  I also used to take karate, because my dad used to own a karate school because he's an uber-black belt-ninja-cop. White water rafting was fun, but I almost drowned doing that, so geh... I have plenty of books filled with old coins, since I used to collect them, but I haven't done it in years. Now I'm in the "websites and computer technologies own me" portion of my life. Oh how I love the internet.

Of course not! I have had people describe it to me, including my father (mostly middle school time-period )
I still don't get it

I like to read. Mostly murder/mystery/thriller. In fact, the next book I'm going to read is titled Death in Holy Orders. I really like detective stuff. I watch TV/Movies. I'm a nut for some of the garbage on MTV. I like to collect series
on DVD and VHS. Right now I have seasons 1 and 4 of Ranma 1/2; seasons 1,2, and 3 of Friends; seasons 1 and 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer; and seasons 1,2, and 3 of Xena: Warrior Princess. Ummmmmm, I've been thinking of writing my autobiography up to the age of 22, yes that much significant stuff has happened and it actually could fit into one of the book genres. I even have a title but I'm not going to share it yet. Hmmm, something that doesn't involve games....shopping..no that invovles games...ah, sleeping!

I sometimes play guitar in my down time. I am generally pretty lousy at it, and it's an on-again off-again hobby. Useful at get-togethers sometimes if people are tipsy and I decide to volunteer to break out a song or two, but otherwise nothing to speak of.

Fun/boring fact, my fiance tells me that my guitar playing on our second date was the moment she knew our relationship would be a big deal, because I hadn't played in front of anyone before (and made sure she knew that!).

Still, I need a formal trainer to get better at this point, as well as a drive to keep playing.

I used to take a lot of photos. I don't so much any more. Parenting isn't much of a hobby, either. smile.gif

I think most people here know I love to play dress up and go to conventions. It's relatively new for me and it's a lot of fun albeit a bit expensive. Working on costumes and wigs, playing with makeup, making friends in the community, traveling, is all a blast. Still trying to figure out a lineup for the next convention.

Hobbies... hobbies...

I'm a professional actor but still enjoy scratch nights & improv (usually unpaid). So I guess it's both my profession, obsession, vocation & hobby.

I write the occassional short screenplay and um, is drinking a hobby?

Posted by: Kame 3rd February 2017 02:42
Seems like now days I don't really have any hobbies. I used to cycle a lot but don't have the time for it. I would like to do more art (and submit stuff to CoN), but again that's on the backburner. If you're wanting to see some of my old stuff, http://noelle-chan.deviantart.com

Can work be a hobby? lol

edit: I have the urge to watercolor now, hmm

Current hobbies... Wow, I can't think of a ton. I've been binge watching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills recently.... Not sure why, but I keep hitting play next episode. I've just been rolling with it. I play Ps4, DS and PC games. I've been playing Skyrim: Special edition recently. All the moddddsssss. Other than that I pretty much just work or sleep.

I've always been into reading. Historical fiction and fantasy, mostly. I've been on a reading hiatus recently due to work. I also greatly enjoy singing!

Wow, this was a thread from 2003!

I knit and crochet, and I love to read. I used to love to write, and wrote a lot, but I lost interest in that sometime in 2012 or so. Knitting and crocheting has sort of taken over that.

Snare drum.

My latest hobby is bouldering which is basically rock climbing without a harness. Technical climbs that aren't so high up you'd be in danger if you fell as there are safety mats. I recommend it, great fun. Climbing is a lot more challenging than it might look, it requires good technique and each climb is a puzzle so you need to think how you are going to tackle each one. Very good social activity as well.

I also like cycling, weight lifting, reading fiction, scifi or fantasy mostly. Also back into miniatures at the moment, there's a lot of board game D&D hybrids coming out at the moment that use miniatures. I'm attempting to paint these, will see how I get on. Most of my spare time still gets spent on video games though. PS4 and PS Vita. Might pick up a VR headset eventually. Maybe.

Posted by: TrueBOSS 7th February 2017 05:51
Mine are working on our youtube channel or collecting trophies on video games I like. Work takes up a lot of my time so I can't fit in anything else. :/

Posted by: Kane 8th August 2017 01:57
Dungeons & Dragons has been my number one hobby since the early '90s, and it's still that today. And my creative writing hobby has gone from hobby to academic focus, but it still feels like a hobby in all the best ways, so that's nice.

I was doing a lot climbing for a while, but I injured my back last year (not climbing) and haven't been able to get back to climbing since.

This is me as well, although I also don't read as much as I used to. I don't know if it's a side effect from meds or what, but I find reading novels difficult these days. As for writing, other than various posts around the internet I don't write anymore. It makes me sad sometimes.

I do a LOT of knitting and crochet, though! I posted some of my Final Fantasy amigurumi in this thread. Currently working on some more (Rain and Lasswell, the two main characters from FFBE) as well as knitting a shawl for myself.

So, I have total hobby ADD and have more interests that I can even find myself able to enjoy but I can't seem to pick one to quit.

Aside from my video game interests, I collect Lego, Sylvanian Famlies/Calico Critters, watch anime, read here and there though nowhere near as much as I did when I was a teenager. I have Lego blog and a SF/CC blog but they don't get near the attention they should.

My brother and I are total nostalgia junkies. We love collecting, looking up, and talking about old games, toys, and memories from our 80s-90s childhood. We go to toy shows sometimes and find stuff. We're actually going to one at the end of September and the last time we went I picked up some new in box FFIX figures that i display on a shelf.

I saw some people mention crochet and knitting and amigurumi and I'd totally like to try that, I also want to learn to hand sew some clothes but I'm trying to be realistic because video games and my two major toy hobbies are all expensive and time consuming so it might not be realistic to add more hobbies. But we'll see how things to when I finish school.

Posted by: Spooniest 4th September 2017 12:21
I don't really know how to characterize my music. Is it a hobby? Is it my vocation? I don't make money at it. But I'm constantly just doing it for the sake of doing it. I'm getting better at it too.

I sold 99% of my gaming consoles/games/accessories the other day, and got a new mixing board, two microphones, a harmonica, an overdrive pedal, and a mic stand... I do still have a ton of games on my PC, and an Xbox 360 Wireless controller to play them with, but I feel like musicking lately, stretching my limits, as you'll hear if you check ^ the Mark Knopfler cover.

I didn't think I was capable of doing the last arpegiated 32nd note stuff at the end, but lo and behold, I listened to the song about 20 times while playing along, and when I went to record, the first time I went for the final solo is what you hear on there. There were 8 hours of practice beforehand and a lifetime of hearing the song too smile.gif It is after all 2 years older than I am.
