Caves of Narshe Forums > 2017 Regalia Playlist Championship > R2: #15 Devil's Lab (FF6) v. #7 Cyan's Theme (FF6)

In this sub-bracket, three of the four songs were from FF6, and now just one will go on again. Devil's Lab pulled off the upset of the tournament so far, in my opinion, moving past the Aria by a single vote. Was that due to its quality, or backlash against its opponent? We'll find out now, as it's now against Cyan's Theme, which bumped off The Red Wings from FF4 last week.

Devil's Lab, the theme from the Magitek Research Facility. As the party discovers, this track is named appropriately given the horrors for which it is a backdrop. It's an ominous song with a heavy industrial beat, by which I mean the beat sounds constructed from the banging of tools and machinery. It had the misfortune of coming quickly up against Clash at the Big Bridge last time - will it have the ability to overcome its underdog status in 2017?

Cyan's Theme reflects the man himself, with a driven tympani line and a heroic melody punctuated with the jingle of bells. Again befitting the character, it has an air of a never-ending quest, in this case his own salvation after loss. In the last competition, Cyan was a six seed, winning two rounds' matchups before falling to Celes' Theme.

Cyan's theme is much more well-rounded, tuneful, and emotive than Devil's Lab, while Devil's Lab doesn't quite give deeper layers of emotion (beyond the initial "factory machinery" atmosphere with the strong and rhythmic beats) until near the end.

My vote goes to Cyan's theme.

Both are fine tracks. However, while Cyan's Theme definitely fits the character in question, I don't feel there's really more to it than that. Devil's Lab not only fits its factory scene, but, in light of what's really going on in there, it really seems to exude a callous devotion to duty. Also, I prefer Devil's Lab's stronger, more driving beat.

As the two above have stated, Cyan's Theme does him such justice, like I said with Frog's Theme, and carries such weight and emotion.
This contest has reminded me, however, of how neat the Devil's Lab track is. I want to hear a funk cover of it.

I've got to agree with GMH on this one. Devil's Lab is perfect for its location, but Cyan's Theme just does a bit more for me as a track. 0:40 is where it really steps apart for me (and also when it transitions back from the chorus to the verse, around :58); the track covers more ground than Devil's Lab, and it does so in a way that makes each part more interesting.
