Hello all, new here. Glad to see so many people interested in the originator still. So its been a long time and I hate to admit that I got impatient and distracted and never finished the game back in the day. Im a little older and hopefully wiser now and fired it up again. My question is I started a new 2 fighter thief black belt party and I'm getting my butt kicked regularly by ogres and sharks around pravoka at level six. I dont think this is right. Am I doing something wrong or should I cut my losses and start over with some magic users before I waste too much time? Thanks in advance!

Ogres and Sharks are certainly the more difficult regular enemies around that point of the game, and you might be a little underleveled, especially if you're on the original NES game.
It's certainly possible to go through the whole game with your party, or any party. People have proven that for years. But if you haven't played the game in a long time, maybe it isn't the worst thing to just pick it up again with a more balanced party. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Well, I personally don't play games to feel like I've mastered the most challenging way to play them. I feel like your party will make the game more challenging repeatedly, and at the very least I would imagine that you'll be doing a lot more grinding for XP and G than I would be interested in.
If that sounds like something you want, I'd say grind as best you can near Elfland or Pravoka (or whatever the names are in the version you're playing, which I don't know), and aim for 10 or so before you move on. One of the most annoying dungeons of the game is coming your way, and you're going to need a lot of healing bought up. If you'd rather have a slightly easier time of it, now's the time to restart with a more balanced party, IMO. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

You have to buy a lot of armor and weapons for such a party. The advantage of having mages is you can stick them in the back row (actually FFI does have a back row; the lower they are in the party roster, the less likely they are to get hit), and you don't have to equip them with so much armor. Their weapons are cheap as well, since they fight mainly with magic.
I'd say if you really must use this party, go back to Pravoka, make sure you buy two Short Swords (Broadswords?) for your fighters, and go to Elfland and pick up a Sabre (or w/e) for the Thief. Keep the Black Belt unarmed, when he levels up he'll start punching up a storm. If you've got 1500 gold lying around, pick up LIT2. It'll make fighting on the ocean (where monsters are weak against lightning) a snap. LIT works similarly, though only on a single target. You can one-shot a Sahag with LIT, for example, if you're lucky. -------------------- X is blue. |

Okay, great advice for the ocean but I can't use magic lol. Anyways I'm getting the impression the consensus here is to start over with a white and black mage. Ill keep one fighter and the big question, keep the black belt or the thief. Hmm....
