Liberi Fatali put a beating on Techno de Chocobo to get to round 2, while J-E-N-O-V-A took out a higher-seeded track from FF13-2, New Bodhum.

While some websites saw jokes about Final Fantasy VIII go too far over the years, there's one thing that nobody can question about that game: Liberi Fatali is the best-known music that game has. It's got that chorus of voices chanting faux Latin (and then real Latin!), and the angry drums of war beneath soaring fanfare. This is a track made for Distant Worlds, where it's been in rotation for many years. Liberi Fatali won a round last time before falling into the pit of Terra's Theme in round two.

J-E-N-O-V-A suffered a fall from grace in this edition of our competition. It came in as a #1 seed last time, before falling all the way to #12 for 2017. The track won two matchups then before falling at the hands of the Final Fantasy Prelude. This track plays when you first fight Jenova, and you know from the first beat that you're in for it.

I actually think the intro to J-E-N-O-V-A (why's it spelled like that?) is more intriguing than that of its competition, and then it leads into a track that's easier to listen to and never gets old.

In this case, Liberi Fatali might be too much of a good thing, and it leaves me waiting for the last few seconds, where it finally mellows out.

As I explained in my last post about J-E-N-O-V-A (why does it have to use dashes?! it makes typing the name so slow!), it's an otherwise excellent track but is unfortunately severely marred by a loop that just...doesn't work at all and feels really forced.

I like strong melodies, but interrupting that flow is...a serious enough problem that I actually don't like to put on J-E-N-O-V-A as background music because I know that'll jump out at me and fill me with a sense of dissatisfaction as my mind tries re-route the music a way I find more fitting.

On the other hand I've just now listened to LIberi Fatali twice. Haven't even heard it in game but I'm liking it already. Seriously, this tourney is almost making me want to jump on playing FFVIII and FFXIII. (And FFIII for that matter. IIIs, what's with them?)

And it's not like Liberi Fatali is lacking in melody either -- just not as prominent. But there is a clear "la la ti ti do do re re" motif, formed from the faux-Latin chanting.

My vote goes to Liberi Fatali.

You've summarized one of the reasons I didn't vote for it, for sure. I'm sick of typing it.
